Wow!
http://www.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1266523978&/Salk-Sound-HT2-TL's-
Whoever was waiting for a great deal on a pair of Salk speakers, here they are. If a buyer isn't local, perhaps a shipping company could pack them and ship them.
-
I was tempted to suggest these to my dad, but then saw that they use 3/4" MDF.
-
While thicker panels may be better, I suspect the 3/4" panels with the internal bracing I assume Jim has used, there's no reason these HT2-TLs would not be both structurally sound and good-sounding.

Pipe,
Be very careful you don't want to wake up the bubinga monster :icon_twisted:
-
I wonder how long this pair will last, the HT3's on Audiogon didn't last a week.

From the photos of these and others I have seen posted in this circle, I must be in the minority of people who just don't like red speakers.
Steve
+1 ............and when I spend this kind of money on speakers I want a matching baffle!

I think my kid would have to transfer to public school. Hope someone can pick them up and enjoy. If I needed some it would be time for a road trip.

That is why we do custom speakers. You can have them any way you want.

Hello AC members,
I'm the fellow who is selling these speakers on Audiogon. FYI... I did raise the asking price to $3300 based on the fact that the actual price for these speakers was $4195 not $3995. If you know of anyone in the market for a pair of these phenomenal speakers, I would be much appreciative if you would share this ad with them. Once I get past the school tuition drama and have saved up enough coin, I will place another order with Jim to replace these. I hope everyone here has a happy and safe holiday season.

Wow. I was angling towards the HT3, but this is a very tempting offer. I'm nowhere near Texas though, so hopefully shipping is an option. :)

Hi Mark,
If you do go with these speakers try to get some decent packing boxes. There was a thread a few months ago and a pair of ht3's were shipped by usps and they were damaged in transit.

Ball is in the seller's court. If he can't find a local buyer right away, he might consider shipping to me.

Rod,
Thanks for the advice. I will probably pay to have them professionally packaged. A little prevention is well worth it when you consider the alternative of damaged or broken speakers.

If I recall correctly, those damaged Salks had been professionally packaged and they were still severely mishandled by UPS. I'd recommend freight myself. It's a little extra but you get out of the mainstream that way so you're getting the special attention for your investement.
Bubinga deserves the attention. (http://pic5.audiogon.com/i/c/f/1261339776.jpg)

I recently sold a pair of SP Tech Timepieces a couple of months ago and shipped them to a seller living in CT. I obtained a really good freight rate from Freightquote.com - much better than what I obtained from calling the freight companies direct. As others have recommended do not use UPS or Fed Ex. Their night shift workers will do a number on your speakers!

I'll look into Freightquote.com if I get the thumbs up from the buyer. Freight does seem like the way to go. Especially if I can arrange for them to bring the speakers inside rather than leaving at the curb. :)

Avoid packing peanuts, full fledged foam will get them to your house, peanuts and Jim will be making a new pair. Insure the new price.
-
If I were purchasing a pre-owned pair of Salks and there was shipping involved and the owner did not have the original packing materials, I would be very concerned. However the shipping method, I would consider contacting Jim to see if I could purchase official shipping containers from him. That would seem to be the safest bet.

Good call on insuring at replacement cost. It would be a heartbreaker to have broken speakers and not enough coin to order new ones.
I have inquired about original packaging. That is a good suggestion to look into replacement containers if the original packaging no longer exists. I have been drooling over speakers for a while. I can wait a little longer and ensure everything is done right.

It would be nice if Jim could offer some service when people are shipping previously owned Salk speakers. Jim, don't know if this is something you might consider doing or offer special packaging pricing, just a suggestion.

We would be happy to supply shipping cartons, Styrofoam, etc. for this purpose. But the problem is the cartons are considered "over-sized" cargo. I just got a quote to do this for someone the other day. FedEx wanted about $180 to ship empty cartons and the lowest trucking quote I got was around $140. So it isn't terribly feasible.
It is interesting to note that if the cartons were just a few inches shorter, the cost would be cut dramatically. Unfortunately, the cartons don't fold that way.

Jim,
The quote was for these speakers, incidentally. :) We are trying to come up with another option for packaging since $180 was a little crazy.

Jim,
Thanks for the info, it is appreciated.

If anyone is interested, these speakers are still available. Sadly we couldn't make shipping work. Maybe if I was slightly closer, I'd consider a road trip.
Mark.

The cash you are saving is worth the trip get a buddy and make it happen :D.

If only you were in ohio........

At $360 in gas (which ignores the true cost of driving), and a price differential of $895 off new, I'd need to be making a vacation out of the trip to justify that.

Why Ohio? Are you thinking about selling some speakers? :)

Original packing may not always be a guaranteed for safe delivery.
I bought a pair of speaker (130 lb each) from an original owner. (It is not Salk brand.) It is shipped with the original box, but had suffered damages on the corners on both speakers. It could have only happened if the speaker was dropped from 1 feet or above.
The speaker was fully insured, and UPS picked them up for inspection, but denied the insurance claim due to inadequte packaging even with original packing material and boxes. I did not further go against UPS but rather let the maker of the speaker repair the damage. I was lucky that the maker fixed them for free.

What did UPS claim was inadequate about the packaging? The more I hear about speaker shipping horror stories, the more appealing freight sounds. :)
Mark.
-
I have read on the internet somewhere that they always deny the first claim. I would have fought with them a while over that one.
-

I think the inspecter thought there had to be more secure packing material. The inside foam is about 1 inch thick, but I don't even think it is enough to protect 100+lb speakers if they are dropped or banged on the corner.
One time I had a turntable shipped to me with non-original packing, but the packing was done at the UPS store. I think the store owner or staff packed it, but the tonearm was not separated, not even fixed, without needle cover. There were visible scratches from the needle and the niddle was badly bent. But I got a full refund and the seller's insurance was accepted. How could they deny damage claims for packing done by themselves?
My suggestion is to ask UPS/FedEx/Or whatever moving company staffs if they can securely pack them. If they agree, then I think the insurance claim would work in case the speaker is damaged in transit. You may have to pay for the material and labor, though.

1 good example Mark of inadequate packaging in loudspeakers would be having only styrofoam caps on the ends to keep the loudspeaker in place but no protection whatsoever on the sides. Even if the packing is double boxed, you can't expect only 2 layers of cardboard and 2-3" of air to adequating protect them sides. AFAIC, a loudspeaker needs to be totally enveloped with molded styrofoam that tightly fits the double boxing to even have a fighting change @ UPS/Fed-Ex. Caps alone don't do squat. Inadequate loudspeaker packaging is more prevalent than it really should be considering the all too well known risks involved.

No no no. This is UPS standard response: deny anything over $100.
Trust me. When my parent's business was still open, I worked for them in college. We would have UPS break any and every thing they could. If it was under $100, always credited our account. If over 100, always denied it. Reason was ALWAYS because of inadequate packaging. Things that were denied by UPS:
A box with a clear hole through it from a fork lift or skid. Denied, inadequate packaging. I told the woman on the line how much it would have been to ship it in a iron crate, as that was the only thing that would prevent a fork lift / skid from putting a hole half way through a 24 x 24 x 24 box. They refused to ever credit us. This was for a collection of 4 matching collectible Santa's that together totaled over $400.
A box that was denied for inadequate packaging 45 minutes AFTER we filed the claim. Claim stated it was inspected and was deemed inadequate packaging. I called the customer personally and she informed me not only was the package still in her foyer, but no one from UPS had stopped by to look at it. When I called UPS, the woman on the other line insisted it had been inspected. I pointed out the time line of 45 minutes and she did not say another word besides 'i have credited your account for the value of the shipment.'
What we would do was have a running total of how much money they refused to refund for damaged shipments, and we never paid it in our monthly billing cycles. When they would call us for the money(it ended up being well over $5 grand by the time my parents business closed), we would tell them to take us to court. They would always just say OK and continue to let us to ship with them and NEVER close our account for past due payments.
Most of the damage is caused by shock damage, which leaves little to no visible damage to the box. inside the box, the contents have been jammed so hard(typically from a decently high drop from one conveyor belt to another), that the contents inside the box have broke. There is a company that sells a shock sensors for boxes that will 'burst' if there is a shock of X G force to the package. If you have those, you can easily prove the UPS caused the damage and they can not refute it.

I was just thinking that the burbinga HT3s would look really nice in my HT Cinema Room.
Would you mind letting me know how much these set you back? Would a PM be possible?
Thank You Very Much!

Hi,
I currently have a pair of Salk sound ht2's that are non tl. I imported them into Australia in 2008 and they are a very nice speaker. Upgraditis always gets me in the end and I was thinking about upgrading to a pair of ht3's. But would there be any improvement in sound quality apart from deeper bass response?
Mind you the non tl ht2's already have very good bass response imo.
thanks

Hello again Rod,
I just read a detailed review on the HT3 on another board here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=13397626&postcount=351
This person's impressions are really causing me to consider getting the HTs over the HT2-TLs,
especially for 2ch music without the need for a sub.
I especially like the part about the whole body chills and goosebumps...the GBR value is high!
(Goose Bump Reserves).
Perhaps you can compare his listening selections to what you are hearing with your HT2s.

Ken

Mine were bought on audiogon of all places when the buzz was barely starting - I pulled the plug without hearing any, glad I did
the first owner loved the speakers - lost his job (he is doing fine now)
two months later the second owner had very bright equipment and thought the speakers were to blame
mine have the rare and first time completed full solid wood front,
extra piano finish,etc
(see the august 2006 veracity #3 on Jim's website for all the extras)
Big Red Machine also had a pair of the solid front burbinga HT3's not sure if Jim has done any more solid front orders but they are really well done
a new pair of HT3's - with standard front and burbinga shouldn't be that much
over base price, but well worth it as you will be holding on to these forever. nothing touches their price point for sound in audio land
JM LAbs Utopias seemed less open and resolving, Wilson watt puppy's not even close
for pricing and options
start with an email, talk to JIm
jim@salksound.com
these are fabulous speakers and that finish is otherworldly
cheers and feel free to p.m.
that said it's 60 today and sunny in New Orleans so I am out of here

Unfortunately (for me), he decided to keep them after not finding a local buyer. I have a set of HT2-TL's (plus the remainder of a home theater setup) on order, and I had another use for these, but it wasn't critical that I get them. You snooze, you loose I guess :green:

Hi Ken, I wrote the review you linked to and currently own a pair of HT3s. They really are fantastic. But, I will say this: When I placed my order the HT2-TL were not available, if they gad been, I might have ordered them instead and saved a bit of money. Someone posted "in room" measurements of the HT2-TL down into the 20's (which is more than sufficient for nearly all music aside from pipe organ). I would really like to see a comparison of in room (same room) measurements for the HT2-TL & HT3. At first I thought that I might want a sub for movies, but I don't. The two models share the same mid-woofer(s) so I would guess that their mid range presence is very close. If you can, try to audition them before you buy... with the right music I would bet they are both capable of high GBR
Either way you can't go wrong.
Cheers, and good luck.
