Netflix is the ideal way to watch TV shows that you didn't catch on their initial airing.  Tons of great shows on there - Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, 24, Lost, Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Stargate, Lie to Me, The Office, Prison Break, Battlestar Galactica, The Killing, etc... And they have tons of great British series too - Downton Abbey, Sherlock, Luther, Wallander, Torchwood, Dr. Who, MI-5, etc.... And of course, the original series like Lillyhammer and House of Cards are great.  They also have most (all?) of the Ken Burns documentaries, they are all worth checking out too.

If you have kids, I also noticed that they worked a deal with Disney and all the classic animated films are up there now.

Great series - I think there are 2 seasons with 3 shows of 1.5 hours - with the guy from the British "The Office" as Dr Watson

Hi,I think Jeff B was right on with the Worlds Fastest Indian. The best (feel good)movie I've seen maybe ever! I don't want to ruin it,but it's about a motorcycle and a will, not a western. Here's one that is streamed from your computer. If you liked Das Boot, the German sub movie, you will like Downfall, a German movie about the last days of Hitler. The guy who plays Hitler should of won some sort of academy award,a very dark movie, totally accurate. One more,Paradise Alley. This was Sly Stallones movie following the first Rocky, the soundtrack nails it with Stallone singing, his brother Frank, really good big band singer today,Tom Waits, gravel voice and all,and Bill Conti's sound track music,a little corny but worth watching....Mark K.

Yes, I like that they have a lot of subscribers and therefore quality of titles and the service itself can keep going up.

They seem to be making high quality miniseries' now, there was just House of Cards and a new one is coming.

Watched "World's Fastest Indian" based on recommendation here, and gotta say I enjoyed it.  It's pretty much a feel good movie all the way through, though not too saccharine, and without any major rough spots for artificial dramatic effect, and gotta say that was actually quite refreshing for a change.

Otherwise seems like there's not enough quality content I want to watch on Netflix streaming, though this feeling comes & goes.  Guess I should check out more TV series or dig deeper.  Keep the suggestions coming!

Between the Folds - very interesting documentary about origami

Excellent documentary. This is what sets Netflix above the rest - the sheer breadth of documentaries, classic films, and foreign films and television. There are/were some great and relatively obscure 1930s Cary Grant films, a GREAT Ingrid Bergman/Anthony Perkins film called Goodbye Again, Elliott Gould/Robert Blake 'original' buddy cop flick Busting, ;Documentaries: Between The Folds, Helvetica, Queen of Versailles, Steinway Piano doc 'Note by Note' (very cool!), Ken Burns Jazz and Baseball and Lewis and Clark and Thomas Jefferson; Foreign films like 'Mahabottein' and The Sicilian Girl, British Series like Being Human and Gavin and Stacey and classic Doctor Who(!!!) on and on and on and on.  All in HD quality.

Their original programming is a testament to this when you consider the broad range of ground they are covering - Lilyhammer, House of Cards, Arrested Development, Upcoming Sci-fi Wachowski series, A horror series premiering this month... all high quality productions to have HBO look over their shoulder (which is the goal, I believe).

If someone is looking for the very latest movie or series, try somewhere else. If someone is looking to broaden their horizons, Netflix is the best and only option worth considering.

Hi Jarcher, who wouldn't like the World's Fastest Indian, theres no swearing, killing or dying or guns and it's still just a great movie. I agree with you that theres not enough good streaming with Netflix. Hulu Plus gives you a free week of looking but I got out of that deal after a couple hours. I did go over to a freinds house that bought this box that hooks up to your telephone cable called Roku, and he was getting all sorts of new channels with out subscribing to cable tv. I was impressed. Maybe someone who has it could tell you more. Here's one I like while waiting for a Roku review. If your on line go to Hulu, not Hulu Plus,go to watch movies free, documentaries, then write in Secret Weapons of War. I thought I knew all about WW2 until I saw this show. Charlton Heston is the narrator. After one episode is over, 45 minutes or so, the next one comes on automatically. I'm no gun guy but I learned a ton of new info they neglect in the history books. I still say Paradise Alley, Stallone's second movie after Rocky on Netflix is up there with the Indian....Mark Korda

Hi Jarcher, I forgot one real good Netflix streamer. If your on the Audio Circle then this is a must. It's a Ken Burns overlooked great one. Empire of the Air. It is a documentary about the birth of radio. It starts with Lee de Forest and the invention of the triode or  audion as he called it. Then Armstrong, the inventor of FM.And the founder of RCA David Sarnoff an immigrant from Russia. I have watched this film over 10 times, it's great!...take care Mark Korda

How about a brilliant Korean film? 'Doomsday Book' contains three short films - all are excellent, but I recommend starting with the 2nd (and strongest) one entitled 'The Heavenly Creature' @ ~38:50. That vignette deals with a topic not unfamiliar to science fiction, but it's the best treatment I have yet witnessed - a beautiful film.

Yes, one has to suffer through reading the English subtitles, but it's very much worth it. I've discovered many foreign films that are well worth that effort.
Title: Re: Netflix: What to watch?
Post by: jarcher on 16 Apr 2013, 05:36 pm
I have noticed that Netflix streaming is stronger on the foreign + documentary genres than say more recent Hollywood stuff, though I blame Hollywood more for that than Netflix.  So this has skewed my Netflix viewing when I don't have one of their disks at hand.

I put Empire of the Air on my queue - thanks.  One of these days I have to tackle one of Burn's longer series, like "Jazz" or the Civil War one.

Did see "Doomsday Book" the other night, which was interesting and different.

A netflix streaming recommendation from me: "The Sound of Noise".  A swedish avant-gard movie about a group of anarchist percussionists who run around the city performing movements guerilla style while being chased by a Detective who just want's some peace and quiet.  Sort of "STOMP" or "BLUE MAN GROUP" meets  Beckett, if that makes any sense.  It's much more entertaining than you would think.

Anyone watched the Hatfields & McCoys mini-series? Worth watching?

Hatfields & McCoys is excellent. Costner and Paxton both bring their A game. Paxton especially is heartbreaking. Not often you get to see him play someone broken and humorless. Tom Berenger is awesome as always, that guy is such a great actor. And what's a quality 'western' without Powers Boothe?

And yes it's pointless to criticize Netflix for not having newer films and tv when the studios specifically put their newer content w/ streamers that charge a premium per title. It's like complaining premium cable isn't as good as Pay per view/On Demand. Totally different structures. And now that Disney has thrown in their hat w/ Netflix, that means not only Disney films but Pixar and Marvel. Netflix is changing the landscape.

Yes I am a Netflix fanboy, since 2002. I remember when everyone said they wouldn't last back then as well...

Rclark and everybody,

I don't have Netflix or Vudu, but I'm trying to help my sister decide on getting one of them. She's away from home so much that I'm thinking she would like to stream only and get the latest movies and any TV shows on the fly that she missed during the week.
Which service would you recommend  :?:  Cost isn't an issue on the purchase.

Just finished the first two of three of H&M trilogy.  Pretty decent - KC is not even so wooden as usual.  So far it seems to be weighted a bit more towards the H's vs the M's......but I don't have a dog in that feud.  Whoever plays the Jim Vance character is great - the best "bad guy" in the series so far.......

Just finished the 7 episode Top Of The Lake which was excellent with great acting. It is a drama set in New Zealand with awe inspiring scenery. My only complaint was the finale seemed rushed (they had to tie up a few loose ends) and some of the dialog from certain characters was hard to understand. All in all though it was very worthwhile viewing.

My wife is the Netflix queen of the house. She does such a great job with choosing the movies, that I don't interfere or play a part in the process of setting up the que.

That being said....
Recently, she and I watched a couple movies with very similar plot lines. The basis of the movies were odd enough that given a choice of watching them after I was told the plot, I'd have said they were stupid, boring and wouldn't have given them a chance.
Lucky for me, I rarely even read the description of the movie that comes in the mail, that I just stick it in the DVD player.
Good thing, because these two movies are pretty cool and I give them a strong recommendation.

"Brake" and "Buried".

I'll let you look up the description and see why I wouldn't have given them a chance.
But if you trust me, don't even read the description and just give them a shot.

Thank me later.

Justified (a southern US police series with great characters)

Really like Foyle's War. Great history lessons incorporated into almost every episode and BBC attention to detail (for instance, the show starts early in WW2 and the Spitfires used in the show are all early war examples) plus great actors and plots.

Late Quartet is a really well done movie with lots of great music.

I am a big fan of the series rather than just a movie because it allows for more character and plot development if done well, like a good book.

This thread's been quiet for a bit, so thought I'd add that I started watching the tv series "24" on Netflix streaming for the first time, as with snow storms DVDs weren't getting here as expected & lots of down time.

Probably the last person on the planet who's never really watched 24.  I can see why people liked it - quite addictive - already went through season 1.  Season 2 doesn't seem to be as frenetic, but still entertaining - and in Dolby Digital unlike season 1.

Saw an ad on TV that seems like a new series is on the way.  Guess I'l just have to get through all 8 seasons before then, God help me!

I've used VPN In Touch (http://www.vpnintouch.com) when I traveled abroad so I could watch Netflix streaming / HBO Go / etc.  Works like a charm to connect as if you were in the US or UK, and you can buy monthly ($5) if you want to try it or don't think you'll need it long term ($30 a year).  Same account works for multiple devices (iPhone / iPads / PCs, mac as well).

For those of you who enjoy quirky films and good food, "Jiro dreams of Sushi" is a really interesting documentary about a man obsessed with being the best at what he does. I learned a bit more about sushi watching this one. Jiro is the fellow in the center.

We watched that couple nights ago, very interesting. A case study that clearly illustrates how great artists can be really disagreeable and self destructive people.

Another interesting documentary I just watched is Bigger, Stronger, Faster (it got around a 96% positive rating on Rotten Tomato's critic's ratings.) It's about the film maker's perception that America's blanket condemnation of steroid use in sport is hypocritical and isn't based on sound reasoning and science. Whatever you think about the subject, it's a fascinating look at America's obsession with being bigger, stronger, and faster.

I have no idea why I loved this movie as much as I did...it was suggested by a friend who knows me pretty well, and she was spot on in her recommendation. It's pretty corny, and not very realistic, but it has a big heart and characters that are hard not to enjoy. It's not going to win any academy awards, but I really liked it.

Since Sons Of Anarchy ended I started watching it again, from the beginning, on Netflix.  Tellyawhat, and I realize this'll be blasphemy to many, this crime-story lovin' viewer finds SOA infinitely more entertaining than Breaking Bad!  And I loved BB!  Never understood why BB got so many accolades and awards and SOA never saw anything.  I guess cookin' Meth is an easier pill to swallow than gun-runnin' motorcycle gangs!;)  Anyhow, really enjoying it much more this time around.  Just got sent an email today from Netflix that Wolf Of Wall Street's available so I know what I'll be watchin' tonight!

Hey hey...

Been like 1,000 years since I last posted to AC, nice to be back.

As Netflix stuff goes... watched most of the first season of this last week at my girl's recommendation... epic. It's a gangster thing, set in Birmingham, England just after WWI. The gang is called the 'Peaky Blinders' because they sewed razor blades into the brims ('peaks') of their caps. I think it's a lot of fun.

I came across Ice Road Truckers last night on netflix, a history channel show. These guy's are nuts driving 30-50 ton semi's on 350 miles of frozen lakes in Canada with only 3 feet of frozen ice between them and the water. What a difficult and dangerous job. You never know when the ice will break and your semi will plunge to the bottom. Insane.

They make about a $1000 a day if they make it. But only last for about 2 months out of the year until the lakes thaw out.

I finished watching Marco Polo about two weeks ago.  The beginning was interesting but towards the end, it dragged a bit perhaps due to the script writing and the attempt to elongate the story more than what is due.

A good didactic series is the title Mankind the Story of All of Us which compiles many facts of history and science together.  Even my 9 year son was quite enthralled with the first episode.  I can already see myself finish all of them this weekend.

Rod,

Are there any other pay per view services available to you?

I ask because I, too, have Netflix, but something like 80% of the content available to me isn't worth wasting my time to watch. That might be a bit severe, but it's so bad that I finally decided to try VUDU. I rent a movie for $2.99, $3.99 - even $5.99. VUDU helps round out for me what I find lacking in Netflix.

I'm really looking forward to trying out HBO's new service, HBO Go. Hopefully, this will fulfill my wants for TV based entertainment.

Michael

Hi Michael,

It looks like Netflix has also partnered with Fetch TV which is an Australian streaming service.  I think it is about $30 per month extra to include it with Netflix.

We have Foxtel which can cost about $100 per month and is quite expensive.

That's too bad, considering that I find it practically impossible to find a movie I want to watch. It's all straight-to-video caca. Everything I search for- new, old, doesn't seem to matter- always seems to come up 'Not available for streaming'. Good for TV shows though and 'House of Cards' kicks ass.

Documentaries! I have been on a food kick for a while. Kings Of Pastry and Somm are the diametric opposite of a reality show format. Both are about a brutally tough exam, and it is remarkable to see how in reality, there is so much camaraderie among the competitors. Instead of the backbiting and bitching and connivery that reality TV shows would rather have you believe.

Then there is Jiro Dreams of Sushi which is about a person who has a savant like devotion to making sushi. Very Japanese, very zen. In India, where I am from, we sometimes call them karma-yogi. A person who derives or finds the meaning of life through their actions and through their pursuit of perfection.

Narcos is a great show :thumb: :thumb:

Half documentary and half Drug lords Gone Wrong.  Or should I say a theatrical docudrama?  It is a factual reply of the Colombian Cartel at it's start ( at least my take after four episodes.)  And the question comes up first thing. Did the CIA bring the crack to the USA to fund their campaigns?   Can ya say Ollie North

This show will require you to pay attention as there is subtitle's for the Spanish dialog.  And there is a lot of Spanish dialog.

I mention this as you will need to check out the subtitle settings.  I found them on the PC visited website.  There are three font size's.  I used the largest (the original configuration of the show subtitle appears like you were watching a movie at home and not on a 40 by 60 screen).

I used a black letter with a yellow border as the original cream lettering over Pablo's yellow shirt would disappear.

And a 5+to Peaky Blinders and that perfect them by Nick Cave

I love Narcos as well. Great show.

Also, there is a PBS Robin Williams special on Netflix now...also very good.

Lastly, "Gett: The Trial of Viviane Ansalem" was quite good. Completely dialogue driven. Essentially it's a courtroom hearing (series of hearings, actually) of a Jewish couple where the wife wants out but struggles to find justification for the divorce, and the husband is dead set on abiding by the Torah and not allowing the divorce. Really well done.

Just finished the first two eps...this show is very, very good, but also very, very disturbing. As someone who was raised in large part by extended family who fought in WWII, some of this is hard to watch. At the same time, it's very engaging and intense, and I will absolutely look forward to finishing the series when it comes out later next month.

It's very well done. The mood, the tone, and yes the cinematography are all very well integrated with great acting. Ben Mendlesohn is an exceptional actor.

And of course Kyle Chandler. One of the most enjoyable TV series I have watched on Netflix has been Friday Night Lights (in which he is the head coach). I am also quite a sucker for sports based movies. Even the formulaic ones - I can just keep watching them one after the other. But Friday Night Lights isn't formulaic, and is in fact a very different kind of series.

Glad that they made a series inspired by the alternate history novel by Phillip K Dick. An interesting writer.

Other movies inspired by the works of Phillip K Dick:

Total Recall
The Adjustment Bureau
A Scanner Darkly
Minority Report
Blade Runner

and others...

This one is directed by Ridley Scott who also did Blade Runner

I'm on ep 4 of JJ, and while the story has been keeping me interested, I'm really getting annoyed by these efforts to make her "hard"...we get it...she loves alcohol and sex, and she is pro-abortion. Some of that stuff is just getting a bit over the top...wish they would focus on developing the story and characters like Daredevil did and stop with all these vices of hers.

It gets better as they get darker and deeper into the relationship between her and Killgrave. It's worth sticking with...overall it's pretty well done. I'd say it's more consistently good than Daredevil, though the latter's best moments exceeded those of JJ (IMO)....

Luther

Luther is a brilliant but emotionally impulsive detective who is tormented by the dark side of humanity while hunting down murderers. Once the self-destructive detective knows the killer's identity, it becomes a psychological duel between predator and prey.

The first episode was very good.

I agree fully about River, Luther, and would also throw in Broadchurch and Jack Taylor.  All of these brit productions do an excellent job of character development with flawed, barely functioning, but succeeding police procedural's.

Funny, I just saw the first season of Broadchurch and loved it but could see it would be slow for some. I guess one could watch Gracepoint instead. Goes faster with shorter editing cuts, slightly less great acting, prettier characters but no season two...yet?

Okay, I'll take your advice and start up again with it. I stopped after ep3, but am more than happy to continue watching.

As for The Man in the High Castle, I feel like Amazon did a bit of a bait and switch with this one. Like many others, I was pretty captivated after the first two eps and was eagerly awaiting the final 8 eps to be released. But this show just went nowhere for me. After a full 10 hours of viewing, I would have expected the overarching story to have advanced...but to me it didn't at all. It was just a series of people tripping over each other, making foolish decisions, and events that seemed to have absolutely nothing to do with the actual premise of the show. That being said, the acting was very good and they did a great job making it really feel like America that had been taken over by the Germans/Japanese...but in terms of the plot, I give it very low marks. I felt like it ended up being a complete waste of my time in the end.

Cruel and Unusual

This was a pleasant surprise and just happened to come across it while looking for something else. The acting isn't the greatest, especially the lead role, but the story line was so interesting that I got hooked. Felt like I was watching a modern day twilight zone episode. If you're interested I recommend just watching it and not checking out the trailer.

That's too bad - I have watched the pilot and it was decent. If I remember, the book that it is based on (by Philip K. Dick) was a good read at first , then rambled, and seemed that it was never finished. Dick was a troubled man at times.

Bloodline (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3520702/) was mentioned briefly in a few posts back in November 2015, at which time only Season 1 had been produced.

I just finished binge watching Seasons 1 and 2 over the course of a couple weeks and found it excellent, addictive and one of the best series I've watched.

Two notes:

1.  Watching the pilot episode, it did start out very slow, truth be told I was a bit bored and tired - so I put it away after about 25 minutes into it.  I revived it the next night, and the second half of the episode picked up the pace.  From there I was hooked!

2.  The last episode of Season 2 (Part 23) ended on a cliffhanger.  Now I'm reading that this coming July is the end of Florida's current film incentive tax credit program (It was filmed in the Florida Keys) and production for Season 3 is up in the air.

Aaaargh!

Steve

British documentary on the history of Afghanistan starting in the 1800's.  It's 2 hours total.  The first episode (hour) focuses on the British/Afghan story in the 1800's and early 1900's.  The second hour focuses on the Russian/Afghan and US/Afghan story in more recent times.  All I can say is that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

Yeah, she is oscar worthy!  I really like the effects, drama, idea, execution of the idea and the visuals.  Yes its a silly monster movie but it is pretty well done.  There was an episode here or there that seemed to kinda drone, but so does Game of Thrones this season.

Part of what I like to do is wait till the season is over and then blow through the whole thing all at once.  It really helps make those "treading water" episodes easier to get through.  Also makes the full arc of the story a bit more clear.  And it makes mid-season digressions a bit less distracting.  Plus there's so many good shows out there now that I need to catch up on, that PD will be finished before I get back around to it.

Bloodline took me till the end to sign off on whether or not to recommend it.  That is for me.  Season 2 is ok so far, not super great, but I haven't finished, I am a couple episodes shy.  But there is too much soccer on now (my sport).   Euro Cup is still pretty early and Copa America ended last night in tears for me (who am I kidding, USA had no chance vs. Argentina but I was hoping to not get so stomped, but at least not Chile/Mexico style stomped....ouch) but Chile/Colombia tonight should be good.

The story is decent. But even though I keep watching, there's parts and characters that make my blood boil. Clark's mom I hate so deep down... if I was Clark I'd kill her. It's torture of when she speaks. Some of the acting can be bad. But it's more captivating than most dramas on Netflix.

Just canceled Netflix recently after getting tired of how difficuly it was to find major motion pictures I wanted to see. Whatever it was, whether it was in the last year or something as old as the Maltese Falcon, whatever I wanted to see always seem to come up as 'Not available for streaming'. They were pretty good for TV shows and documentaries (and a vast wasteland of straight-to-video crap that you never heard of) but that wasn't enough to justify paying for them every month. Especially as Amazon video comes free with a prime membership. So bye-bye Netflix, if I want to Watch a DVD I'll go to the Redbox machine in front of the 7-Eleven down the street.

Especially as Amazon video comes free with a prime membership. So bye-bye Netflix, if I want to Watch a DVD I'll go to the Redbox machine in front of the 7-Eleven down the street.

Log on to tcm.com if you want to see old movies. tcm.com has a monthly schedule to view. I do and when I see a real decent old movie I record it.
Sometimes on a Saturday night your PBS station might have a movie you'd like to recored.
If I want to see a currant movie I use Redbox.

I've not tried movies but definitely found interesting CDs at the local library. In theory, all on your favorite online subscription service but in practice, not necessarily and anyway it's still seems more fun to just pick things off the shelf and see what you get. Costs nothing.

Just finished watching 'An Honorable Women' and think they could continue on.  Israeli/Palestinian intrigue with British Jewish firm attempting to build high speed communication and schools while MI-6, CIA, terrorist kidnappings and convoluted inter-twinning of different agenda's.  Bang up acting and good story development with plenty of suspense.  Sorry its over....for now.

I agree. Excellent show  :thumb:

Just picked up some CDs and Movies from the library today. Movies are relatively recent with some as Blurays. CD are usually ones that were released in the last 5 years, trends to popular music and country, but I find interesting blues and jazz albums I wouldn't search out elsewhere.

It's fantastic, despite a little slowdown in the initial episodes of S02. I can't say I find the law-firm related issues captivating, but after that, it not only picks up pace, but the story-line takes on another dimension!

I wasn't aware Containment was canceled.  It exists on my Netflix feed.  If I watch one episode and find a story that has intriguing possibilities I continue.  The fact that the story could continue for more seasons but gets cancelled is of no consequence.  Not every story narrative needs to have a wrap.  I like to use my imagination and write my own possible conclusions.  I can always find the Belgium story on which this is based.

Black Mirror has some awesome episodes. BBC consistently knocks it out of the park

Last season of Torchwood, "Miracle Day:A world where no one dies. Sounds great, but turns out to be a nightmare. No one dies, but they don't get well, and people keep being born. What to do? uhh.....not pretty.

Dark Matter is not half bad. Maybe not as good as a lot of other shows but pretty entertaining.

Who care if Stranger Things was derivative. It was pretty fun. Those kids did a bang up job. I'm sure the writers would acknowledge it was an homage to Steven King. I loved "Stand by Me" so I suppose I was predisposed to like this show.

Really like Daredevil.

I may look at buying stock in Netflix, they seem be on the road to being a major player, especially as a lot of us cut out cable TV in favor of internet content.

(Which only sucks when I can't watch the golf majors, or baseball playoffs, but hey I suppose I can get a cheap TV antenna for network TV broadcast.....ya know....old school)

Farscape is one of the best ever and gets really good when there's sufficient time for the larger story arcs to develop, so some people may not like it in the first season or more as you found out. Very enjoyable SF. Moya being organic is a nice touch as well.

You are right, it was great.  I was skeptical because it looked like a cheap Canadian show that would be facile and cliched.  And it sort of was that first season.  But then it seemed like the writers kind of said "eh, screw it - let's GO FOR IT".  Not too much different than one of my other favorite irreverent and well written shows: Supernatural.  Supernatural struggled through 2 pretty bad seasons before the writers just decided to start having hella fun.  Oh, I notice that all 11 seasons are on Netflix now, too.  Highly recommended if you like "Buffy for Bros" as someone here on AC once put it.

Watched Luke Caged, liked it quite a bit.  I thought it was better than Daredevil, better acting from all the main players plus I just love Mahershala Ali.  The thing I liked most about the series is that the focus was really on Harlem and the people and players in it.  Since Luke Cage has no costume and really some not-very-interesting powers, the focus wasn't really on him kicking ass all the time.  It was more focused on the system and everyone's place in that system.  In that way it reminded me a bit of The Wire.  Anyway, good cast, good cinematography, good scripts and GREAT music.  Thumbs up!

So far I've only watched a few episodes of Luke Cage.  I'm kind of stalled out, haven't watched an episode in a few weeks. Frankly it bores me.  Maybe it will get better as it goes but the cast isn't doing much for me.  I really like the guy that plays Cage but Cottonmouth is boring so far.  IMO Daredevil and Jessica Jones were much better.  I plan to try to push on through a few more episodes and see if it gets any better.

Right now though my main addiction is Westworld!  That one is HBO so it's only out one EP at time but so far it's brilliant.

Agreed it is a very clever show.  Once the second season starts.  First season was (to be honest) quite difficult to get through.  The first season it tried to be scary and it just wasn't.  I liked it in the second season because they gave up on the whole "lets be scary" and focused more on the brothers and their broader world/universe.

On Apple TV and Oppo you can choose original Brazilian portuguesa with English subtitles (how I watched it). On Apple TV hold down the center button while viewing and the option will come up. I think with the oppo it was the same (hold center button in the middle of the navigation arrows).

I wanted like the show better than I actually did after just finishing up. The first three episodes were compelling,  then it sort of dragged from there. The last episode did raise some interesting questions and perspectives. I also found myself having to look past the low production values a little more than I would have liked.  So overall I would give it a B-.

If 'The Crown' is available on US Netflix, it is worth watching. Outstanding production values, writing and acting.

Second "The Crown" which is on US Netflix. Superb. With a sometimes "Brucknerian" soundtrack that really fits.

Thanks for the tip.

Just watched the first two episodes of The OA. So far very promising. The extended cold open in episode 1 is really well done.

The OA is a new Scifi series starting today .
It's getting a lot of buzz , I will be checking it out in the future .

Check out this review from NY Mag:

http://www.vulture.com/2016/12/netflix-oa-is-your-binge-worthy-december-surprise.html

I binged it yesterday and although I was intrigued enough to watch it through I'm not sure I can say I like it. This quote here is from the vulture review..

"Admittedly, The OA contains some moments that may come across as goofy rather than in the meaningful, mystical way in which they’re intended."

I definitely had to laugh a few times at several scenes and only wondered what the actors thought when given the script. The trailer I saw earlier in the week was very deceiving as it's not at all what I thought it would be as a sc/fi thriller but rather something else. I think it's one of those shows/movies where they had an interesting idea but not sure it was executed the way it could have been.

If you are a Buffy fan, you will probably like Crazyhead. Check it out on Netflix.

After working my way through all but one of the episodes, I feel compelled to modify my first post. While Crazyhead has some of the charm of Buffy, it is a much weaker (and far courser) series. At this point, I would give it a C+ on overall quality and inventiveness.

Has anyone checked out "Black Mirror"? British series. Dark. Great acting. Very provocative.

Combines technology with the tendencies of human nature in the near future. Thought stirring and not necessarily pretty.

Yes - people compare it to a modern day Twilight Zone and I think that's pretty apt.

Binged on 'Nobel' this week, really enjoyed it. It's Norwegian, subtitled in English, and to describe it as being about Norwegian political and military involvement in Afghanistan really does not do it justice. Strong acting, good storyline, think of it as a mystery.

Is it nudity and sex that makes sense in the story or is it "Game of Thrones" nudity and sex, most of which is completely unrelated to the story and completely out of place?

Goliath...is anybody watching this? Drew me in from the git-go and really didn't let up. Binge-d the whole thing over the last two days. Yep, feeling a little guilty but was it worth it. Really compelling, but then I like kinda dark and psychologically twisted stuff...

Considering it involves the lives of depraved French royalty it does make sense.

Yes, I really enjoyed it.  There were a number of questions left unanswered, so I can't imagine Season 2 not happening.

Also a great role and character for Billy Bob Thornton.  "Listen, lady, I'm nervous enough already, and you're a f*#king yapper. I don't do good with yappers."

Found this in Special Interest menu.

Bergen to Oslo, seven hours of scenic bliss on the Norwegian railway. You can sit back and listen to tunes on your stereo as you make the trip. :singing:

Bergen also looks like a nice place to live if you don't mind lots of rain. Because it's on the coast they get ocean winds that make for a mild winter, rarely below -10 Celsius and summer rarely above 30 Celsius. But because of the mountains the winds don't move inland and dumps lots of rain as a result

Netflix adapted food writer Michael Polan's recent book into a four part series "Cooked." I just finished watching the last episode and really enjoyed it. Some people put down Polan as a foodie elitist that just makes them feel bad about how they eat and the fact they don't have infinite time to devote to artisanal cooking. There might be some merit in that view but I think he's a very thought provoking writer myself. I certainly won't think the same way about certain foods again after watching the series. Well worth watching if you're into such things.

The wife & I watched Season 1 recently. It was quite good. Neil Patrick Harris was a hoot playing Count Olaf (better than Jim Carrey's effort in the movie version IMO). This is a Barry Sonnenfeld production & has that "Pushing Daisies" fantasy feel to it.

Better Call Saul Season 2 is now available for streaming. We really enjoyed Season 1.

I typically wouldn't even bother with a show like this, but I just finished season 2 of "Love" on netflix. I like shows where the characters elicit some sort of emotion or reaction in me, and the characters in this show do in a big way. It's pretty well-written, the episodes go down quick and easy, and it's a pretty fun ride. I'm really looking forward to s3.

Also, speaking of shows I never would have expected to watch, "13 Reasons Why" looked to me that it was more for kids/teenagers. But it deals with some themes that can apply to people of all ages, and the story is quite compelling. I'm on ep 5 of this one, and I have to say it's got my attention.

Saw some of you guys mention Goliath and Black Mirror...two shows I really enjoyed, with Mirror being one of the most fascinating shows I've ever seen. There aren't many episodes, but each one is almost like a mini-movie. I binged on season 3 in a big way. Can't wait for more!

I have to admit, both Netflix and Amazon have done a pretty solid job with the original programming (including those series they didn't produce, but purchased and marketed as "originals"). I dont even watch network (ABC, NBC, etc) shows...I watch cable shows occasionally...but these days I'd say I watch quite a LOT of shows on Netflix and Amazon. Sneaky Pete just came to mind as another good one (Amazon). Lots of good stuff these days.

So little time. I've watched some episodes of Time Team on Acorn via the Roku. I'm an British history buff, but TV takes time away from music and books. I like those Amazing Race reruns on Hulu and rewatched that AMC show "Preacher" or is it "The Preacher" since I missed the final episodes when it ran. I shouldn't have bothered since I was hugely disappointed with how it ended. Very poor, after a generally well done series until then.

A series I haven't watched is the "Series of Unfortunate Events." Maybe I should since my niece, a high powered book publisher and editor at Harper Collins in NY named Katherine Tegen was the author's editor for that series. She was probably involved in the TV production since that was added to her duties a few years ago. She was also publisher and editor of the books of author Roth, Divergent, etc.

Short episodes, a few seasons to enjoy.  Try a few . My 10 year old loves these too.

"This Emmy-nominated series is designed to mess with the ultimate supercomputer. Host Jason Silva reveals how brains process information related to topics like stress, addiction, competition, food, trust and language. Interactive games and hidden-camera experiments capture hilarious and shocking results, and viewers get real-world takeaways -- how to improve memory, get a better night's sleep, make more money -- to use in everyday situations."

If it hasn't already been mentioned, I want to suggest an Aussie TV series that rivals anything on Netflix. It's  called Offspring. See what you think. We are nearing the end of Season 6 currently. There are 7 in total. The emotional crescendo at the end of Season 5 brings such a rush of feelings and confusion and resolution in a wind down that will leave you limp. This is a masterful performance by all involved.

You can access the subtitle menu and there's language option to switch to german language and english subtitles. Without knowing the platform you are using, I can't give you specific instruction. But this should help: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/372

Good to know. I guess Netflix thought for its American audience they would release Dark with English voice over rather than in its original German. I know for some it's a distraction to have to read subtitles but to me it's more distracting listening to bad acting voice overs.

The Apple TV I normally use for watching Netflix has settings for language and subtitles but for whatever reason the German option has this other voice, almost like someone narrating the scene, that got really annoying. The Netflix menu for language actually had two options for German with one being normal with no secondary voice talking. Kinda weird.

Unabomber (I cannot stop saying "wudder" now!)
Ozark (cannot wait for S2)
Mindhunter (I liked Unabomber more, but this one is worth seeing)
Comedians in Cars getting Coffee - I admit I often like the cars more than the guests, but the conversation is interesting and fun to see some of these folks "out of character".

Godless was fantastic, but because I am working from home (contracting) and also seriously sick with the flu, I am crushing all the good ones.

Mindhunter was good.

Dark was even better (subtitled/dubbed).

Other fantastic ones I've seen in recent memory on Netflix are Manhunt: Unabomber.   The latter made me actually look shit up because I didn't believe parts of it. Won't give away.

Luther staring Idris Elba is great.  British serial killer show.

Bored to Death is funny in a clever way.  Uses Ted Danson effectively.

Broadchurch is excellent, especially if you have kids.  Punches you in the gut.

It's not on Netflix, but I also recommend "The Leftovers" from HBO.  It's powerful especially if you've ever been through extended periods of grief.  I found it cathartic.

If you do any work in the corporate world at all, then "House of Lies" is pretty funny and very on-point.

Altered Carbon - not a comedy but very adult drama it is. Half the time I'm trying to figure out what is happening, just like the characters, then it all makes sense. A very hard boiled detective mystery that evolves into another mystery with plenty of action.

Did I mention it takes place in the future:

I think I started Luther...not sure why I quit....it happens....maybe too much.

I do not have kids and in fact that is a salient point between 'us' and 'them'... my g/f has a 15 yo but she is more us than them, not that she doesn't love and cherish him, she does.. there is more to it

Watched Anon last night. What a weird movie, a detective thriller/drama in a futuristic cyber virtual world. You have to watch intently or you will get lost in the story line. Gets a little tedious at times trying to follow along but a unique movie.

Clive Owen plays the main character in the movie ( I like his movies as they usually have a good story line).

I give it 3 out of 5 stars because I had to watch so intently. At the end I wasn't sure whether to give it the thumbs up, only cause I generally prefer action movies.

Cargo is a suspenseful zombie movie that is written and directed by Yolanda Ramke and takes place in Australia. Better than a "B" zombie movie so I give it an A-.

I highly recommend La Mante ('the mantis"), a French miniseries about an imprisoned serial killer (played extremely well by Carole Bouquet, whom I believe was once a Bond girl), who is asked to help the police catch her copycat killer. The series, which is dark and complex, takes some very interesting turns. One of the best things we've seen on Netflix.

Wow, I was surprised at this. If I was “afraid” of something it was that this was going to end up being stupid like this genre can be a lot of the time. I kept waiting for that turning point for it to get goofy or ridiculous but it never did and thought the ending was well done.

My daughter and I have been rolling through the first 4 seasons of "The 100".  For a show aimed at the YA demographic, it's actually quite excellent.  I love that on the show, things start off with a crisis and it just gets worse from there.  And worse, and worse.   For something aimed at the teenagers, it's pretty freaking bleak.

I really enjoyed this 18 part animated anthology, it checked all the boxes on my binge list:
Short, fast paced entertaining stories
Futuristic
Inspired and varied animation
Plenty of gore and titillation, I'd give it a hard R ratiing, not for kids unless you want to turn them into little psychos.

This is one of the few instances the critics on Rotten Tomatoes got it wrong, the Audience Score is 91% - the crowd is right.

Yep, a real eye opener on many fronts. The technology/engineering and size of the support staff is mind boggling. The money involved in F1 is beyond staggering. Then there's the politics and ego's amongst teams and drivers. To be one of the elite 20 drivers sometimes involves more than just driving skill. That said, it seems the deepest pockets more often than not end up on the podium. No surprise there.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut

The definitive 117 minute version released in 2007, this version was restored and edited by Ridley Scott with excellent 5.1 sound. This is the only version over which Ridley Scott had complete artistic control and includes scenes cut from the 1982 US theatrical release.

Dark is a very cool show !!!

“When two children go missing in a small German town, its sinful past is exposed along with the double lives and fractured relationships that exist among four families as they search for the kids. The mystery-drama series introduces an intricate puzzle filled with twists that includes a web of curious characters, all of whom have a connection to the town's troubled history -- whether they know it or not. The story includes supernatural elements that tie back to the same town in 1986. "Dark" represents the first German original series produced for Netflix.”

"Diablero" Season 1 and 2.  This one seems to follow the same lines as Supernatural, but it has a freshness that comes perhaps from Mexican lore.  In general, it is quite entertaining.

I also watched "The Witcher" never played the games but somehow I wind up watching the entire season within 5 days....meaning, that it had me captive for long.

These days, unless something has a special quality, be it storyline or acting, it is hard for me to stay put.

Dark was great although none of my friends could concentrate long enough to follow the plot, the series is smart TV at it's finest.

I spent months not watching any show in the English language, love the diversity and the easy access to art worldwide.

Money Heist is a Spanish series about a meticulously prepared takeover of the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid, in which a group of robbers take hostages as part of their plan to print and escape with €2.4 billion.

Trapped is an Icelandic thriller and murder mystery set in a snowbound, tiny fishing town. The story has multiple plots or it could be one convoluted plot that keeps every guessing.

Russian Doll is about a woman reliving the same disastrous night, you will die laughing https://youtu.be/YHcKoAMGGvY (https://youtu.be/YHcKoAMGGvY)

Two really great series:

Occupied -"From a storyline conceived by bestselling author Jo Nesbø, `Occupied' focuses on political and environmental issues affecting Scandinavia. The ten-part Nordic drama is based in the near future, when environmental concerns prompt the Norwegian government to stop all oil and gas production in the North Sea. With limited resources available elsewhere, these actions result in a world crisis. Stepping in on behalf of the EU, Russia invades the country with the sole aim to complete a "silk-glove" operation, which involves taking control of the oil supplies. However, as the mission gets underway, further political conflicts take over the nation."

Honor/Shame - https://www.thedailybeast.com/girihaji-inside-netflixs-stunning-new-ultraviolent-yakuza-series

An old favorite which may still be there is "The Getdown"

Kingdom on Netflix is a South Korean action zombie series set in 1560, a few years after the Japanese invasions of Korea. Great story, excellent period costumes, voracious zombies. The recently released Season 2 may be better than the first season.

Bong Joon Ho, the director of Parasite, the 2020 Academy Awards Best Picture may be a new name to many, but he has directed 6 other films that should be seen.

Snowpiercer (2013) and Okja (2017) are both available on Netflix. His previous films will be harder to find but well worth the search:

Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000) is a dark comedy
Memories of Murder (2003) a murder mystery
The Host (2006) is a very funny monster movie
Mother (2009) is a suspenseful murder mystery

I started watching Bong Joon Ho films 10 years ago, at that time the only way to watch them was to find the movies on South Korean movie buff web sites, a little bit of a challenge since I don't read or speak Korean.

Altered Carbon is back after 2 years and it looks great and sounds terrific with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack! It is now 2412, 30 years after season 1 ended and Takeshi Kovacs has been re-sleeved many times, this season actor Anthony Mackie (3 Avengers, 2 Captain America, Antman, Black Mirror) takes the lead role. I read this is one of Nexflix's more expensive shows to produce and it shows. Great sets, plenty of action along with nasty mean, ugly characters. Season 2 is now written and directed almost exclusively by women or by men of color so the story is better balanced and characters have more depth. And no, Altered Carbon hasn't turned into a futuristic "Little Women", it still has a hard "R" rating.

Viewers new to the series should watch Season 1 or prepared to be totally confused by all the terminology. Luckily TV Guide has a list of all the future speak:

"The Sinner" is a USA Network show, but Seasons 1 and 2 now available on Netflix.  Season 3 is on USA.  It's a slow-burn psychological crime drama / mystery that's well done.

All providers are doing some bandwidth limiting, my brother manages all the towers East of Denver around the Firestone area. He says nothing is crashing but traffic is getting close to 100% and they are using many traffic shaping tools.

I get the same message but when Netflix does connect it is solid. Since I am on the computer all day I think my provider starts limiting my bandwidth too but I have a totally unscientific method to connect.

My theory is Netflix likes a fresh start so I do three things:

First, I reboot the DSL router, unplug for 10 seconds then plug in, it will then reconnect to the internet, it takes a few minutes to connect.
Second, I restart the computer. Both the DSL router and computer are usually up and running at the same time.
Third, I start Netflix and it has always instantly connected with no notices.

I use the Netflix app on my computer so this may not work for everyone. I have a dumb TV, this is one way to get Netflix.
I have discovered that the Netflix computer app also enables Dolby Atmos sound even if you have a 1080p TV. Here is my tutorial:

Agreed, I have both.  Takes me forever to find a decent movie to watch on Netflix.  Way too much straight to video junk.  But Amazon is not hugely better in that regard.

I do like that Amazon gives the IMDB rating in the description.  Saves the xtra step of researching it myself.  While I don't always agree with it, for my tastes and in general I find that a rating over 6.0 means the movie will be at least decent and not a complete waste of time.

Amazon Prime currently has the best catalog of obscure/genre/interesting content right now.

I've watched:

Daughters of the Darkness. 'Erotic' vampire film from the early 70s. Moody and European with some gorgeous cinematography and strong performances.

VOODOO - A documentary by Djimon Hounsou. Djimon Hounsou is one of my favorite underrated actors. Best known for Amistad and Blood Diamond and some Marvel movies. He directs this doc about Voodoo in his home country of Benin, higlighting its misconceptions in the West. Really good.

The Party - Peter Sellers as an Indian actor who gets wrongly invited to a Hollywood party. Blake Edwards directed. This movie is fascinating in that Sellers is straight up *brilliant* with his physical comedy, but the brownface is such a facepalm you can't help but groan.

Time Team - Long running British archaeology show hosted by none other than Baldric from Blackadder. Currently my binge favorite as there are tons of episodes. From Bronze Age to Industrial age, the team only has 3 days to excavate in each episode. Great show for the kids as well.

Some Kind of Hero - Here's a rarity. Little known Richard Pryor film from the early 80s. Pryor plays a Vietnam vet who returns home and faces all the pitfalls of adjusting. Co-stars Margot Kidder. This is more of a dramedy so don't expect nonstop belly laughs.

Norseman is a farcical, brutish satire featuring sensitive Vikings. A lot more bloody than Monty Python, men and women get poked in various places so not for the young kids unless you are real good at explaining what is happening.

Connected is for all ages, the kids will like the episode on Poop.

Giri/Haji is a well done crime drama that takes place in Tokyo and London. The series is about family and the modern Yakuza crime organizations. In English and Japanese (subtitled).

Shadow

A beautifully filmed epic tale of intrigue in ancient China directed by Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS). Filmed in a hybrid black & white/color technique, the images never fail to impress. You could use this film as a demo to show off the amazing grey scale and black level of your new TV or projector.

Just finished the first season of "The Great" on HULU. It's a fictional and satirical take on Catherine the Great. They call it an occasionally true story. Very good, even Great..

I've watched and enjoyed all of it. Perhaps a little overacted at times, but the imagery makes up for it. And I guess I like the historical perspective, which is often not the case.

Ip Man, Ip Man 2, Ip Man 3, Ip Man 4

The four films loosely follows the life of real life marshal arts Master Ip Man of which Bruce Lee was his most famous student. I was surprised by the excellent production values, sound and choreography, especially in the first film. Ip Man 3 is a must see, Mike Tyson shows off what a dangerous animal he was with a ferocious fight sequence with Ip Man.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhQsxcbo6gk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhQsxcbo6gk)

All the films portray Ip Man as a quiet thoughtful person, always reluctant to fight unless honor is at stake. And there are plenty of fights.

I enjoyed my Ip Man film festival.

"Bad Blood" on Netflix.  First season is based on the rise and fall of the real life Rizzuto family and organized crime in Canada.   Dark and gritty, good cast.  A gripping and superior crime drama.

On Netflix

Sense8 is an interesting psychological sci-fi foreign series.  Very slow start that gains momentum.
Space Force was a bit of a laugh.
Altered Carbon seemed good, but I really didn't get into it.
Better Than Us is I think Russian, another robot with feelings and a dangerous past, but I liked it.
Colony was pretty good, a bit too much everything is horribly out of control until miracle happens here, but watchable with actors you'll recognize from other hit shows.

Hell on Wheels is great, I watched it on the original broadcast.
Umbrella Academy is the best series on Netflix.

I'm teeing up Warrior Nun, Halt and Catch Fire, The I-land.

Occasionally brilliant, the second half is exciting and entertaining but getting there is slow going. At first I couldn't relate to the 15 year old gamer trapped alone in an apartment but he eventually adapted to his situation. A fun zombie movie for all ages, especially teenage girls who think boys are 'idiots'.

But The Crown is mesmerizing. The public expectations along with the isolation of Queen Elizabeth in service of a country is mind blowing. The acting is top notch and set design is perfection.

i and my wife have recently gotten into "Virgin River" on netflix - it is a charming series - set in a little town -  supposedly in northern california (its not a real town though) - It was really filmed in a place near vancouver    Nothing really happens except daily dramas between members of the community and run ins with illegal marijuana growers

whats notable is the cast - Tim Matheson of animal house fame and the west wing and a host of other notable movies in the 80's and 90's - and Annette O'Toole made a host of movies in the 1980's and 90's

If the world ended - these people would be the last to know about it - its a beautiful place with a lot of backward small town language but O'Toole's acting chops and the star alexandra brekinridge (mel) - steal the series

Great story, gorgeous production, amazing actors, and the chance to see Jeff Daniels cast against type as one of the most amoral villains you'll ever find. Death to 2020 is a most of the time funny satire of the year 2020. Filmed in a mockumentary style by Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones it features Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant, Kumail Nanjiani, Lisa Kudrow, Leslie Jones, Cristin Milioti, and Tracey Ullman as the Queen of England. It's all pretty hilarious, everyone is skewered although some are poked more than others.

The film starts with Dash Bracket (Samuel Jackson), a reporter for the New Yorkerly News, asking the interviewer "What's this for?"
The off screen interviewer says: "It's a look back over the year, we're redoing the events of 2020."
Jackson replies: "Why the f**k would you want to do that?"

Tracy Ullman as the Queen

Alice in Borderland has a lot more action than 'The Queen's Gambit'.

The series is adapted from a Japanese suspense manga series. Three friends are trapped in a post-apocalyptic parallel world in which they are forced to participate in risky, violent, dangerous and deadly games in order to survive. While racing to solve timed complex puzzles they set out to unravel one mystery after another as the bodies pile up.

Tightly edited with short 30 minute episodes you have just enough time for your heart to slow down before the next episode starts.

With a 96% RT Audience Score Netflix already renewed 'Alice in Borderland' for season 2.

Season 3 of Disenchantment just dropped. The series reminds me of Fractured Fairy Tales (1959 - 1964) narrated by Edward Everett Horton but with a very adult telling. The series follows Bean, King Zøg's daughter through many mis-adventures. Every scene has multiple layers of satire, I re-wind a lot to see what I missed.

Created by Matt Groening who also drew the comic strip Life in Hell and the television series The Simpsons and Futurama. Akbar and Jeff also make appearances, too much fun.

Shaun the Sheep: The Farmer's Llamas was released in 2015 but somehow I missed it. Wild and wacky stop motion animation by the same people who brought you Wallace and Gromit. Non-stop action is fun for everyone with basically no dialog, communication is in dog, sheep and llama language. 30 minutes of smiles.

Sky Rojo is a fast paced action series with impeccable credentials. The setup is simple: three prostitutes escape from a high-end anything goes whorehouse after seriously injuring their boss and are on the run from his pimps. The pimps instructions are to return them to the boss so he can carve them up.

Needless to say there is dark comedy, nudity, ribald sex, violence and blood along with the tender story of three women bonding while escaping the hardship's they were born into, one woman was sold into prostitution/slavery by her mother.

Sky Rojo was created by Álex Pina with his professional and personal partner Esther Martínez Lobato, who is also one of the writers. Pina and Lobato also created and wrote "Money Heist" (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/la_casa_de_papel), the excellent Spanish bank robbery series also on Netflix. Sky Rojo is designed to be colorful with all action all the time:

“We wanted to show a constant third act — all action, all the time,” Martínez Lobato said. “You take away any sequence or dialogue that is not absolutely necessary for the plot and you only use what’s extremely important and fast-paced. It is hectic and completely different from what we’re used to doing, but very stimulating.”

Each episode is 1/2 hour long, like a bag of spicy bar-b-q corn chips it is very, very binge worthy.

As a kid I watched 20,000 Leagues under the Sea and became terrified of Octopuses (that's right, not octopie). But I've come to realize what beautiful, mysterious, highly intelligent and even playful creatures they are. My wife and I watched My Octopus Teacher last night and I loved how over time the octopus came to trust and then become an affectionate friend of the diver. I also very much appreciated the insight of the diver who perceived the whole ocean ecosystem as being "1000 times more awake and intelligent" than he is. Our planet is populated by an incomprehensively complex interconnected network of intelligent life - artistry really - of which we and Octopuses are a tiny but vital part. Wonderful documentary.

Based on a comic, originally intended for Hulu, I've only watched two episodes as of this posting.  I had to take an emotional break for a half hour after the first episode to recover my equalibrium.  Finishing the second installment I need another.  Perhaps because I have the flu like summer cold that's epidemic, or I'm more emotional in my elder years, but I've never been affected by any TV series like this before.  It's trending #1 on Netflix now and I see why.  Of course a silly comic book premise, it's so well done that you really suspend disbelief in the impossibility, I found myself hollering NO as Dog almost sufferers a terrible fate.  The casting is superb, the plot moves briskly, the young star is engaging, the cinematography splendid, filmed in New Zealand.  The Downey's have done fine work here.  As you might gather I'm quite taken with this series.  Anyone else?

I watched them all. My complaint is that the season is short AF.

Awhile back I read the comics and I don't recall all of it. I know the TV show is quite a bit different. From what I recall Gus in the comic is really mixed with a dear... he's basically half brain dead.

The Ice Road starring Liam Neeson is goofy fun. With overloaded big rigs racing on melting ice roads and a gruff Liam punching his way to the end, what's not to like?

This is one movie you shouldn't watch alone. Gather a few friends and some beer because you all will want to laugh at the action and make snide comments. The Ice Road reminded me of the Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons although I doubt that is the comparison the director intended.

Still scowling, Liam is really good at it

Cowboy Bebop is having a moment. Netflix has both the original anime series and the live action re-boot. Both are fun.

The 1998 anime series was a hit in Japan and the US. The detailed graphics and inventive story lines make each episode a joy to watch. A big plus is the English dubbed version has A-list voice actors and is excellent. Universally recognized as the best anime series ever made, it shares top billing with the 1995 classic anime "Ghost in the Shell (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113568/)".

The NY Times review of the original Cowboy Bebop anime says:
"A 1:1 mix of sci-fi western and film noir, steeped in American jazz and blues and framed by retro James Bond-meets-Blue Note" 1

The new 2021 Cowboy Bebop sort of follows the same story line as the anime series but with variations. Anime fans looking for a note-by-note remake will be disappointed and invariably will give the series a bad review as seen in the Netflix reviews but taken on it's own it's alright with many of the scenes set as an homage to the original. The action moves right along and I'm never bored.

The new series stars John Cho as Spike Spiegel. John was Saturday Night Live's guest host this Saturday (11-20-21)

I suggest watching at least the first 5 episodes of the anime before the live action, that will give you a good understanding how each episode unfolds and how the characters interact.

Yoko Kanno, the composer who created the iconic core for the anime series returns to create the soundtrack for the new live action re-boot. The music always sounds fresh and exciting.

Season 1 of The Witcher was a lot of fun.  You can tell they spent a lot of money on it, the production values are high.  Surprisingly good acting from the cast, too.  They inject a lot of nudity, sex and violence similar to what Game of Thrones did.  Although the Witcher is no where near the quality of show that GoT was.

Have you been tapping into my feed?  Exactly what I've been watching, except finished Ozark a couple months ago.  Now I'm watching Soviet Storm on Prime, a Russian produced history of WWII from their perspective.  Very detailed with two seasons and exact troop movements, relative strengths, bios of the commanders n the field, etc.  Very interesting to see Ukraine attacked from the other side, west to east, then back the other way as the Soviet Union takes back territory from Hitler.

That's good to know.  I keep getting ads for that.

My family liked both Enola Holmes movies.

My wife and I really liked the Arnold documentary, which splits into three parts: body building; stardom; politics.  He really impressed me.  He comes clean about a lot.  His family story was interesting too.  Not to give too much away, but his upbringing pushed him in part to become the way he was.

I was in the mood for a western when a film I hadn't seen popped up in a news feed:

In a Valley of Violence made in 2016

Definitively a "B" revenge movie about a loner (Ethan Hawke) and an authoritarian Marshall (John Travolta), but entertaining and better than a lot of stuff on Netflix.

There is an interesting tie-in to a bunch of stuff I have been watching. Ethan Hawke has an excellent performance as Elora's father in Reservation Dogs, season 3, episode 9. Elora’s auntie Teenie dropped the bomb that Elora’s father didn’t actually die in a motorcycle accident with her mother. Nope, he’s some white guy who’s been hanging around Tulsa and now Elora needs to find him to sign college loan application papers.

In a Valley of Violence's writer and director is Ti West. His last two films were the terrific "X" and "Pearl." I reviewed both films and looking forward to "MaXXXine", the third film in the trilogy.

X (2022) - Ti West's classic horror, slasher, porno film

Pearl (2022) - an origin story by Ti West

The last John Travolta film I saw was "Paradise City" (2022) which was memorable because it is one of the last films Bruce Willis made.

Society of the Snow - the true story of survival in the Andes Mountains for 72 days with no food.

"In 1972, the Uruguayan Air Force flight 571, chartered to transport a rugby team to Chile, experiences an unexpected incident and crashes into a glacier in the heart of the Andes. Of the 45 passengers on board, only 16 manage to survive. Trapped in one of the most inaccessible and hostile environments on the planet, they are forced to resort to cannibalism to stay alive. Their survival will depend on the decisions they make in the midst of this desperate situation."

Just in case everyone is frantically searching Netflix for "X" (https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=182126.msg1913024#msg1913024), you can stop looking, it's not on Netflix unless S Clark has a premium level I'm not aware of.

I loved "X" but obviously it's not for everyone. The movie poster should be a tip off. "Pearl" (https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=184428.msg1935667#msg1935667) is the second film in Ti West's trilogy about Maxine. The upcoming film "MaXXXine" will be the final film in the trilogy.

Netflix is getting a little nuts with their prices. Netflix has begun an effort to push customers to either more expensive or ad-supported plans. The cheapest ad-free plan, the Standard plan, now costs $15.50 per month. That's because the company's Basic plan is being phased out for new and returning customers, per the letter to shareholders and Netflix's plans and pricing page. We binged Who Is Erin Carter.

Heard good things about the movie This Is 40 but haven't watched it yet. But we did watch Tarzan and that was far better then I expected.

Current subscribers to the Basic plan can keep their plan until it is changed or canceled by the user. https://help.netflix.com/en/node/24926

Prime is doing the same thing charging $2.99 extra a month for commercial free. UFB! I hate commercials! I pay A LOT for cable and still have to watch commercials? Such a grift! We record most everything and FF through the ads but still it sucks!
Ok rant over now back to pleasant self…GET OFF MY LAWN ya little bastards!!!  :nono: :x

Netflix is getting a little nuts with their prices.

Unfortunately the price increases and password sharing crackdown has only increased revenue and subscriptions, other streaming services are taking note.

"Netflix registered its third-consecutive quarter of accelerating subscriber growth in the final three months of 2023, closing out a comeback year that included a crackdown on viewers freeloading on the video-streaming service and a smattering of price hikes.

"The fourth-quarter results announced Tuesday provided further evidence that Netflix was able to come up with a formula that produced a spike in subscribers even as it became more expensive to watch its lineup of TV shows and movies.

"[Netflix added] 13.1 million worldwide subscribers during the October-December period, well above analyst projections, according to FactSet Research. The holiday season gains — the biggest Netflix has ever posted in the fourth quarter — exceeded the 8.8 million additional subscribers that Netflix posted in the July-September period...

"The rising tide of customers left Netflix with more than 260 million global subscribers at the end of 2023 — an annual increase of nearly 30 million subscribers."

Yeah, what's the point of paying for content if you get commercials? Commercial-free is the main reason I have Netflix.

Fargo, Coen brothers. They have a long history of black comedy but this time around they definitely have a political message, so some people definitely aren't going to like the latest series.

Hey guys, you all have one week to get your Netflix parental controls set up otherwise when you get home from work your 6 year old will be watching "X" with rapt attention.

That's right, "X" will start streaming on Netflix on February 1st.

"X" has gruesome kills and unapologetic sex taking place at a creepy farm house at the beginning of the VHS porn industry. The Technicolor "Wizard of OZ" like cinematography will keep your children mesmerized as Maxine brings the ax down.

The Killer by Fincher was great, of course.  Watched that a couple weeks ago and it's like a more grounded version of John Wick (ie, more methodical and less over the top action).
