Brett, I hope he's right. There is one aspect to the loudness thing the author doesn't address: That it is used as a crutch to hide a) bands lacking playing talent and b) engineers & producers lacking mixing talent.

I hope he is right too.  However, most of the schools churning out audio engineers will have to be on board as their students probably have had all their experience listening to things produced during the loudness wars and likely think that is the way it should be done.

Popular music has never been to my concern. I grew up in the 90's - popular music was already dying then, by the time I grew up some and should have really cared about popular music it was already dead. I would also argue that music today may be better than ever. I think my biggest problem is that there is too much great music to discover and this is a seriously good problem to have.
