Suggestions for what to do with an Armoire?
« on: 5 Oct 2010, 02:33 pm »
Any ideas on what to do with an old armoire that's big enough to house a 27" TV? It's a decent one so I hate to throw it out and I can find any interested in buying it cheap.

I would cut it down and use the bottom half a stand for an HDTV but I have no wood working skills.

Try Craigslist?  Salvation Army or Goodwill?

If it's antique, send it off to an auction.

Or donate it to some unfortunate family.

Got one of those things from 1990s also.  Use it to store LPs, cassette tapes, camera systems, audio cables and pool table accessories.  They are difficult to sell or give away, especially if a large part of the back was cut away for that big CRT television.

Seems as if almost anything CRT related is considered junk.  I heard even Goodwill was not taking donated CRTs as nobody wants them.

Hell, I LOVE my 34" Sony XBR CRT!  Tempted to buy 'em up to last me the rest of my limited) life.  Trying to find a 30" widescreen CRT to replace my wife's old magnavox 27. Has to fit in a specific fireplace opening, though.

Paul,  Probably true in MO where you live but let me interject something here for CA residents.  Goodwill in CA accepts e-waste for recycling. I have dropped e-waste  (computer, CRT monitor, VCR, cassette player, phones) there several times.  As far as I know, they still accept it.  There is a Goodwill collection (normal donations and e-waste) site near me and I find it much more convenient than waiting for a special collection event and waiting in line at a school or the fairgrounds.

As for a suggestion for getting rid of the armoire--Goodwill or Craig's List.

Offer it free for pickup, if you truly cannot make use of it.

I listed a non-working 15 year old Toshiba TV on Craigslist.

Young guy who picked it up - was an artist and photographer. His project at the time: ripping up old electronics and taking 'artsy' b&w photographs.

Story was and is worth more than free to me!

If it is large enough use it as a spare closet. When my 36" Sony XBR crt dies a flatscreen will go on the wall and the armoire will be come a spare closet in the guest room. The thing is such a nice piece of furniture, I would hate to get rid of it.

Thanks for the suggestions. As rodge827 suggested I am going to figure out how to use it as a spare closet somewhere, even if it means the basement or the garage.

That's exactly what I thought of when I saw the topic of this thread. :)

I am using an old Telefunken floor radio as my audio PC "holder".  Helps mask the sound, and stores the PC, external HD, screen, mouse etc.

Not sure if you use PC audio or if you even want that big unit in your house etc, but that is what I have turned what I bought off craigslist for $50 into.
