TAL (Tube Audio Lab) Korneff 45 clone. There's something, actually a lot of something, about a 45 tube. Over the years, I've worked my way down the SET food chain from 300Bs to 2A3s to 45s, and if your speakers are up--or down--to the 1.5 watts available, you'll reach the end of your search for musical jollies. At least, I did. Since I got my hands on a Jeff Korneff original, it's time to let someone else enjoy this. Local pickup in 23061 is welcome.
Uses a pair of 45 tubes, two 6SN7s, and a 5U4. I've been told you can use a 5R4, too, but I never did. The switch on back, above the power receptacle, toggles between 4 and 8 ohms for speakers. The guy I bought the amp from had the original Russian PIO caps replaced with larger Russian PIOs (I'll include the originals with the amp). For comparison, I grabbed a shot of the original caps TAL uses, possibly in this very amp, from the TAL website and put it below the photo of my amp. My guess would be the upgraded ones are maybe twice as large. There's a very light hum coming from the amp, but you have to be standing over it to hear.
Photo shows a Wizard 45 along with a Ken-Rad, but you'll be getting a pair of the lovely Ken-Rads with the amp, along with the RCA 5U4 and pair of chrome-dome Sylvania 6SN7s. I'll also supply a couple of extra RCA 5U4s for your listening pleasure.
