Universal remote with voice activation
« on: 9 Mar 2023, 10:19 pm »
After numerous years, operations and lost hopes, my wife has completely lost her eyesight in her right and can only see a bright light shown in her left. She really has a heart and has been optimistic until the specialists have told her this is the best she will ever have. She developed anxiety attacks with some panic attacks and depression going at the same time. While the meds she is on are starting to help, we have a ways to go.
I am trying to find a universal remote control with voice activation so she can listen to the television. I got her an Iphone and Ipad so she doesn't have to even touch it to answer the phone or listen to her audio books. Until the attacks she could figure the remote numbers to get the channel she seeked (music stations, game shows or shows that spoke pretty much and you don't really need to see) but here lately she is getting lost on the remote. Thus I am looking for voice activation. I have spectrum cable and Sony Bravia television.
You guys know of anything out there that can help?

Thanks
Don

I think you want the remote that controls the Spectrum cable box to be the voice activated one. I would call Spectrum and ask them if they have any voice remotes for their cable boxes.

Would this voice activated Sony remote will be of any help?

You could buy a Fire TV stick and put the content (apps) she wants to access on the Fire TV stick. Then she would use the voice remote control (Alexa based) that comes with it to call up things. It's less than $50 so it might be worth trying.

I don't know if putting different texture tape on some of the remote buttons would make the remote control easier to use by feel.

Lastly I would look into an Echo. There is a lot of content that can be accessed and controlled by voice in this ecosystem. I use one connected via analog out into my desktop audio system. It is extremely voice friendly once set up. Happy to discuss this in more detail as desired.

Are you familiar with HDMI-CEC? It's a standard that allows all of the devices to chitty-chat together meaning one device could control all.
What is the model of your Bravia?
