A good article on David Berning at CAF by Stereophile.

Here are some pictures of the custom amp David had at the show. It was preamped by the Linear Tube Audio MicroZOTL2 (also his design, of course) and alternately fed by either a Metrum Pavane + Jriver or a Fern & Roby turntable, with Voxativ speakers. Also a picture of his cool shirt.

Thanks willsw, David Berning has been designing amps since he was 16 years old. Now that he is retired, he has more time for projects. :thumb:

David also had the Cherry Bomb in the DCAudioDIY room.   He hooked it up Sunday and it was really sounding good.

To bad it was made with Hitachi SIT transistors that are Unobtanium.  They just happen to have one pair to try.

Are those the transistors that NuPrime snagged for their HPA-9 headphone amp?

Does not look like it, the HPA-9 has Hitachi bipolars that are out of production.  The SIT is a Hitachi J-FET power transistor long out of production.

Thanks HAL, I did a search on David's Cherry Bomb amp and came up with this info.

The idea for, and basic design for the Cherry Bomb is Tom Perazella's. He was trying to replicate the concept and performance characteristics of Dave's SET 300b amp.  That's the reason it's choke loaded (Dave's 300b is choke loaded). The transistors curve traced very similarly to 300b tubes, and he thought it would be fun to see how close they could make it sound to the 300b amp.  Dave did give great assistance in tweaking/testing/designing and getting it up and running without blowing those unobtainable transistors.
