Cecil Taylor,visionary pianist, died.
« on: 6 Apr 2018, 09:41 pm »

Cecil Taylor, the visionary pianist who revolutionized jazz by launching the free-jazz movement in the late ’50s, died Thursday at his home in Brooklyn. He was 89.

Taylor’s legal guardian, Adam C. Wilner, confirmed the death to The Associated Press by phone Friday. No more details were provided.

Taylor, born in New York on March 25, 1929, was known as one of the pioneers of the free jazz movement, and was seen as both a grounding breaking and uncompromising artist.

Taylor released his first album, “Jazz Advance,” in 1956. He was also known as a poet and would recite his poems at live shows.

Cecil was an influential figure in jazz who always pushed the boundaries.  I've got a couple of his lp's- tried and failed to gain an appreciation of his style.

Wow, a great artist, and he lived to be 89; that's about 375 years in jazz age....

That's funny   I'm not to surprise to hear that he has passed.  The second line of the greats are old!  (All of the first line originals are gone)

Nicely put. I struggled to say it as eloquently and respectfully as you.

With all due respect to the artist...

I have a mint Blue Note first press of "Conquistador!" that I tried to listen to twice. My notes in Discogs: "Quite possibly the worst album ever recorded..."

I am sure I am missing something. R.I.P. Cecil.
