Thinking of MASSDROP X SENNHEISER HD 58X JUBILEE
« on: 29 Oct 2019, 02:25 pm »
Thinking about getting these for the holidays.
Based off a $500 headphone .
All the YT reviews say they are amazing sounding and a total steal at $160.
Anyone ever listened to these ?

I've purchase both the HD58X and HE4XX in the last few months.  I like them both but each shine with different music.

I've never owned the 6xx series, but did have the HD700 for a short time and didn't care for it.

While they don't need an amp, I would STRONGLY still consider one.  I was pretty underwhelmed using them out of my DAC as well as portable devices.  I have a MusicHall ph25.2 headphone amp and it takes them up a few notches.

The HD58x are like putting on your favorite sweatshirt, warm soft and comforting.  The HE4xx are like getting ready for a night out on the town.

Thanks for the great responses !!
I have read and watched only incredible praises for this Headphone!!
This can looks way more comfortable than the HE 4xx, and I think it’s much lighter .
Although I think I may prefer an exciting night out presentation rather than layered back sound .
Is the 58x easier to drive than the 4xx?

“Sennheiser has done a splendid job in the mids’ department! After listening to these headphones did I realize my old HD 598SE actually had the classic veil that Sennheiser was known and sometimes despised for. These headphones have much more full-bodied mids than the HD 598SE and even though these have more forward mids than the HD 598SE, they never felt shouty and too much “in your face”.

Much easier, an amp is mandatory with the 4xx.  But an amp is still recommend for 58x if you want all they can give.

Thanks - I just read a number of favorable comparisons to other much more $$ including the the HD600, HD650 and HD800.

So who knows, I'll just have to wait and see.

Agree with dolsey's comments.
The hifimans (like all planars) wants a source with current capability- the more the better- to deliver satisfying dynamics. The higher-impedance Sennheisers want something that can swing the volts into the higher impedance. A great low cost option that should work well into either would be the Schiit Magni 3. $99 (or $79 if they have any 'B-stock units lying around).

The Phillips lokk nice but how do you tell which channel is which?

58X is like a 6XX/650 with a more rolled off top end. Very warm, easy on the ears, very good resolution.

D@mn you...
It's the 3, not the new 3+, but that's a great deal (even if Amazon does inflate the list price to $119 to make the deal look even better than it is) (why?)
Wonder what the difference is anyway... Probably not much.

More power and lower noise.  The Magni 3+ and Magni Heresy have 2.4 watts of output at 32 ohms.

If you don’t own open back headphones, don’t be stupid! Click on over to Amazon and purchase the Phillips 9500’s for $54 bucks. Seriously!!
If you do own open back headphones this makes a perfect travel pair. I was just doing lawn work in them .
They are sooooo comfortable!!!!!! Super lightweight!!
Don’t have a headphone amp.  Don’t need one !! Getting plenty of power from my iPhone 10r. If the sound gets gets 10-20% better you are dealing with headphones that easily compete with headphones in the $150-$500 realm. They may be there without an amplifier..
There is a very good Youtuber reviewer who likes theses better than the Sennheiser he 600’s he reviewed.
The sound is f****ing breathtaking.
This is a no brainer for $54 and tax.
My first open back and I’m thrilled !!!!!!
I would go by the Shiit Magi amp , but we just had a major plumbing disaster.
A friend of mine has the HD 800s and a sick amp . Maybe it’s time for a comparison listen and to hear what these can do on a $2,000 amp that he has .
I like the sound better than my Sennheiser 846’s that cost me a grand .
Just do it !!!
