Name your favorite Christmas cd's
« on: 4 Dec 2007, 01:27 am »
Since the holiday spirit, not to mention shopping madness is in full swing, thought it's a good time to create a list of favorite Christmas albums.

Amy Grant:  Home For Christmas
George Winston: December
Garth Brooks:  Beyond the Season

Can't recall the name but it's a Frank Sinatra Christmas cd. I'll have to pick up that Amy Grant you mention and give it a spin!

George Winston: December

I never really thought of that one as being Christmas music.  Great piano player though.

White Christmas (Bing Crosby)  :thumb:
The Christmas Songs (Nat King Cole)  :thumb:

Then I have to sheepishly admit that I like the Christmas Collection by the Carpenters.    :thumb:

I have a bunch of Christmas music CDs, and by far, my favorite is Harry Connick's "When My Heart Finds Christmas".  The music on this CD is upbeat and festive - puts me in the holiday mood.  He has another Christmas CD, titled "Harry For The Holidays", which is more run of the mill for me.

My least favorite Christmas CD is Diana Krall's "Christmas Songs".  Her style and sound just doesn't sound festive to me.

Dan Gibsons "Christmas Classics" Solitudes  -  My favorite CD, ever. This stems back to my early childhood.
Loreena Mc Kennitt "A winter Garden " - A small collection of fantastic melodic tracks. A must have for any 'purist'.
Vince Guaraldi Trio  "A Charlie Brown Christmas"  - Absolute classic. 'nuff said.

The classics (Crosby, Cole, etc) have been named, and for good reason.  I second George Winston December, too.   A bit off the beaten path is Bruce Cockburn Christmas (1993 release).  I love it.

Love the Cockburn disc!

Also check out Holly Cole - Baby It's Cold Outside

Her rendition of Sleigh Bells with just voice and acoustic bass is quite a ride as well as an audiophile quality sonic treat.

Also, don't forget Leroy Anderson's classic version of Sleigh Ride from the Frederick Fennell Mercury Living Presence recording.

Everything You Want for Christmas
 by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

This is Christmas music with a decidedly New Orleans attitude.

Suprisingly "Christmas Time with the Judds" is great.  It's not at all Country fried, but just great songs very tastefully done by talented singers.

My guilty pleasure single song is "Christmas in Hollis" by Run DMC.  It has got a really hot groove and great street lyrics.  It's about the only "Rap" I've ever been able to tolerate.

It was December 24th on Hollis Ave in the dark
When I see a man chilling with his dog in the park
I approached very slowly with my heart full of fear
Looked at his dog, oh my God, an ill reindeer
But then I was illin because the man had a beard
And a bag full of goodies, 12 o'clock had neared
So I turned my head a second and the man had gone
But he left his driver's wallet smack dead on the lawn
I picket the wallet up then I took a pause
Took out the license and it cold said "Santa Claus"
A million dollars in it, cold hundreds of G's
Enough to buy a boat and matching car with ease
But I'd never steal from Santa, cause that ain't right
So I'm going home to mail it back to him that night
But when I got home I bugged, cause under the tree
Was a letter from Santa and all the dough was for me

D.M.C. :

It's Christmas time in Hollis Queens
Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens
Rice and stuffing, macaroni and cheese
And Santa put gifts under Christmas trees
Decorate the house with lights at night
Snow's on the ground, snow white so bright
In the fireplace is the yule log
Beneath the mistle toe as we drink egg nog
The rhymes you hear are the rhymes of Darryl's
But each and every year we bust Chrsitmas carrols
(Christmas melodies)

Run-D.M.C. :

Rhymes so loud and prod you hear it
It's Christmas time and we got the spirit
Jack Frost chillin, the ?orchas out?
And that's what Christmas is all about
The time is now, the place is here
And the whole wide world is filled with cheer

D.M.C. :

My name's D.M.C. with the mic in my hand
And I'm chilling and coolin just like a snowman
So open your eyes, lend us an ear
We want to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Far and away, my favorite is....

Vince Guaraldi Trio  "A Charlie Brown Christmas"  - Absolute classic. 'nuff said.

It's playing pretty much 24/7 this time of year.

The others?  I'm with Chris on Nat, Bing, and Burl.

I guess I'm just a classics kinda guy.
