YouTube videos of Open Baffle speakers
« on: 7 Feb 2019, 12:21 pm »
From my experience of viewing a large number of videos of Open Baffle speakers, including my own, it seems that most are visited by an echo not present at the source. This shows up predominantly in vocals and may be the reason most people post instrumental tracks.

Is there something about the way OBs react with the room that makes them difficult to record. I would love to see a really good video of OBs if anyone knows of one. That way it may be possible to determine the best way of reproducing the sound. I personally would not buy OBs based on the qualities shown on YouTube.

Most YT videos are MP3 compressed, these videos are just an help or appetizer to know the real playback performance, as they are free its a great welcome.

Hello,

yes indeed, besides past the sound quality of the compressed files, rest not less than the feminine voices are very complex to record and all the more through loudspeakers and microphones.
the open baffles undergo the reverb of the listening room due to the back wave which rebels a lot and for that, to record an open baffle is very complicated.

They seem to have gone to a lot of trouble to do that and it seems that YouTube itself can convey the essence of the performance. Interesting that they took their recording very close to the drivers, which probably helped to reduce room contributions (echo)

Thanks Gilles, that confirms my own thinking, compounded by using just a DSLR camera with pin hole microphone.

I think this short video show the situation quite graphically. The closer the mic to the driver the truer the sound.

BUT
You only get mono and its a pretty boring video :)

I wonder if the microphone polar response has a bearing on all this?

Hello Rocket_Ronny,

my motto is to do with cheap :)

it is sometimes more complicated like this but, that allows to have real result, that also makes it possible to sacrifice a speaker to make a big speaker to reproduce bass. The infraflex is a Belgian invention by Etienne Labroux that I had the joy of meeting and doing tests in agreement with high performance systems like VOTTs with a friend.

For recording, I only attached the microphones to the smarthphone, recorded the audio and did the audio / video editing with screeflow (Mac OS)

here is the infraflex is open baffle and these various montages. works of 20 Hz at 400 Hz

this is recording with smartphone , the sound is poor in bass but 115 db spl at 3 m with TPA 3116 class D

Interesting speakers, as it looks like a home made exciter similar to DML/BMR technology...What is the white material used, polystyrene?
