Title: My 12 year old 55 inch Panasonic plasma just won't die!
Post by: Emil on 29 Nov 2018, 03:17 pm
I think it may actually be older :icon_lol:

I really want a 65 inch but cannot justify it as long as the Panasonic is still kicking.

I have my eye on these new OlED sets particularly this LG.

I watch mostly cable TV ( Optimum Cablevision here on Long island)  with some streaming thru Amazon and Netflix. Would the LG be overkill?
is the signal from cable and netflix of good quality to take full advantage of this cutting edge technology?

Comments and advice much appreciated

I saw a 65 inch 4G at Best Buy for $600 over the weekend that I wanted, but I also have a 55 inch Panasonic plasma that is about 10 years old and still looks great to my eyes.

Looks like Panasonic plasmas are dead.

I have a 52" Sony LCD, over 10 years old, and I was looking at Black Friday sales too, but I also have two kids in college :/

So decided upgrade will wait at least one more year.

Curious to see what you do, but I was looking at lower end stuff when I was dreaming last week.

I too have a 55" Panasonic plasma and unless something about OLED technology has really improved in the last year since I last looked a new TV's, the plasma display still looks better to me in some respects (shadow separation and black density.) I'm really bummed that plasma went the way of the dodo.

Good point! I just assumed it would be better but these new sets do look phenomenal at Best Buy.
What strikes me most is a greater sense of depth. Almost 3D like.

Of course the signal feed is a closed circuit.

Totally understand the dilemma. My 55" Panasonic VT25 plasma is still going strong. I had it calibrated by BestBuy back in 2012 when i bought, and it looks absolutely fantastic. I cannot truly make a case for a new TV with this one functioning the way it is. Pity they are no longer made ... it truly is a beautiful TV.

All the Ham radio operators are happy when their neighbors plasma TV's finally die.  They are a great source of interference. Why your hi-fi might sound better with the TV turned off.

55 inch is kinda little. We got the Samsung QLED 65 inch in September and now wish we'd have waited 2 months for all of the Samsungs to go on sale which they did. We could have sprung for the 75 inch. My internet bandwidth is more than sufficient to keep these new units well fed. And the HD antenna works great for local channels.

I'm eyeing the 82 inch for the not-yet-finished entertainment room.

I have many Panny plasma's around my house.

60 inch in the basement, bought that at the end of life for them around 4 years ago.

55 inch on the main floor - won that through a Tim Horton's coffee promotion around 7 years ago - did have to replace 1 board in it around 5 years ago.

Another 60 inch in the bedroom - had a 42 (would be 12 years old now) but inherited the 60.  Was worth lugging it up there!

When one of them dies, I will see what is out there.  Would consider whatever tech is doing well at the time, but happy they are all running well so far.

Agree that the modern TV's are larger even for the same size as bezels have shrunk.  Will likely be able to stuff a 65 where the 55 is now (the fireplace area was built to house a 60 dimensionally 7 years ago).

I had a Panny plasma until this year. As a film-lover I was reluctant, but it was just too heavy to take another move. I replaced it with the well-reviewed TCL P607 4K. No contest, the TCL is just better. The contrast, the color, how it handles 1080p and lower images. And TCL has a new model this year that is even better. The Pannys just don't compete against really good 4K TVs, and nowhere near OLED.

The other catch with plasma is that if you calculate the money you've spent on electricity bills over the time of ownership you may have even doubled the cost of the TV. Another reason to just get a new TV now since they are far more energy efficient. Plasmas use up a lot of juice.

Not all new TVs are created equal. TCL and Vizio are the only <$1k brands I would purchase and the reviews back that up. Next up from that maybe a Sony, and then QLED or OLED.

For new TV reviews I like RTings.com.

When I was dreaming before, I was looking at the TCL and Rtings.com reviews.
Good to hear I was on the right track.  Amazing what you can get now for less than $1000.

And with the small bezel, a new 65" will be about 1/2" taller and 1" wider than my 52" LCD with it's HUGE bezel lol.
Weighs a lot less too, that surprised me when I was comparing specs.

Well maybe next black Friday.

When I bought my TCL I almost dismissed it because Best Buy had it alllllll the way over at the end of the TV section, mounted up high with an unflattering display by the cheapy and outdated models. Thank goodness I did my research.

The only downside to the TCL (and maybe other new TVs at this point) is the main display. Since it has an integrated Roku the main display is similar and includes promotional ads for other channels that pop up on the right side of the screen and you can't get rid of it. Also, the remote controls everything. No buttons on the TV itself. So it's not a great option for technophobes. Upside, you can use your smartphone as a remote as well including audio if you need to use headphones. You can also do advanced display changes (gamma, color temp, even specific grading) with your phone using the Roku app.

I have had good reliability over the years with television.
This is going to be hilarious I know! But true...
Unplugged my 19" JVC for Y2K. On a bet from my brother the ultimate  KC Chiefs fan I agreed to try to leave it off a year for $500.
Never turned it back on and gave it to my daughter when I moved into our lake house!
Going on 19 years now.   :)

I purchased both 55" and 42" Panasonic Plasma TV's the day we moved into our current house, that was a little over 10 years ago. The 55" is in the family room and is more or less on from 6:30am to 10:00pm (don't ask...my wife like to leave it on for the dogs). Anyway, I've been waiting patiently for it to crap out but it's still running strong. Amazing.

Funny, the Canadian government has figured out how to charge us a $50 "environmental impact fee" when we buy a TV and i believe they charge another fee when you recycle it. Your tongue in cheek offer actually sounds pretty good to me.

Was bummed when our Panasonic plasma failed about a month ago. Was thrilled when I was able to get the  board that failed repaired. If it lasts until the higher end OLED prices come down I'll be very pleased. Heck, if it lasts ten more years I'll be even more pleased.

The picture on it is so good I have no desire to get a new tv.

Trade-off I guess for being so affordable. I paid less than $600 for mine and I would have had to double that to beat it. But yeah, the promotional thingy can be annoying.

I don't think some folks caught the power consumption part though. Seriously, plasmas can easily use 400-500 Watts, especially the older models. So you are paying an energy tax on top of the cost. If it were top of the image chain like it used to be, it would be worth it. Now you're just losing money. Basically using old tech AND paying interest on it.

I paid $1400 for Panny back in 2008. Had it for 10 years. Let's say I conservatively used $8/mo in electricity. That's almost a $1000 on top of the initial cost. So by early this year I had a $2400 TV that performed worse than a $600 one that uses only 1/8 to 1/4 the power...

OLEDs are so f'n gorgeous.

But I will wait until next year when the prices are supposed to drop because of Iphone supply demand and Samsung's monopoly on the tech loosening with companies like LG ramping up their offerings.

My 42" Panasonic plasma uses 293 watts. A 55" LG OLED uses 370 watts. I spent a few days investigating new tvs when my Panasonic was in for repair. There are many video afficianados who believe that plasma is still top of the image chain.

From what I've found top OLEDs are also still behind plasma with regard to viewing angle and especially motion. I'm sure I'll end up with an OLED one of these days but that won't happen until my plasma is dead. Hopefully by then OLEDs will have surpassed or at least caught up with plasma.

Cheers,

Scott

Those factors are dependent on the brand and model. I am not unilaterally advocating every new TV as being better. Some handle motion better, some don't. Same with viewing angle. Just like some plasmas are better than others. If you have a $$$$ Kuro 1080P, is it still better than the average new 4K LED? Maybe? Better than an OLED? Hmmm...

When I saw this years LG OLED, I think it was a B8 or C8, it was the first tv that made me want to upgrade from my 2013 Panny VT60. I’ve done everything to extract all the best out of my plasma but looking at the LG even under horrible lighting in a Best Buy I could tell it was far superior. It’s the first I’ve seen that not only has better color/contrast/detail but also has that great cinematic feel that my plasma has given me.

STOP THE PRESSES

I convinced my wife into getting a 70-90 inch screen and she was sober

Budget is $4k and that includes the TV and entertainment center

Check out this 86incher!

I would think an extended warranty is a must.

Comments? Other suggestions? Go smaller? Viewing distance roughly 12-15 feet

Dont want to sacrifice quality for size. Looking for that sweet spot

Hello !
I am in a similar situation I have a 58" Panasonic Plasma that is 11 years old and refuses to die, so this September a deal come on Costco on line to purchase the highly rate Vizio P65Q 65 " Quantum TV Tax included $ 1533.00 I have been evaluating that since 9/15/2018 hoping I could find an OLED LG C8 which is fabulous in picture quality  during Xmas time for the right price !  or a 75" TV which I really want ,but way to expensive to justify the cost !  but here is the funny part when I turn the Panny on  most programs seem to look the same ? even HDR content  seems to be Well ???  I either stream or use an OPPO 205, I have until December 27, 2018 to make up my mind the Wife thinks she does not see any difference in picture quality between to the two TV on most programming it that possible ??  maybe it is our eyes

he's what I'm gathering from this thread....

Members keep their televisions for a LONG time. In the 8 years I had mine I went through so many different audio components its ridiculous. The price for the "top of the line" tv (OLED something)  is not that much comparatively. Cost per day over 8, 10, 12 years?

Do people watch more TV than they do listening to their music systems?

My 58" Panny Plasma is still working fine as well!

I have no plans to replace it, tvs just get better and cheaper every year and I think the Plasma tvs still look good... maybe not top end OLED good, but good enough for me. :)  I don't use it a lot of hours either, so it's not a big priority.

My 60" Panny Plasma is only 6 years so hopefully I have another 6 to go.

My stereo music system is integrated into the 5.1 TV, Blu-ray home theater, computer streaming setup. The majority of time is spent listening is radio and recorded music with video only 2-3 hours nightly.

I definitely agree that if you can't tell the difference between a plasma and a decent LED/OLED then keep it. That's if you don't count the fact that the plasma probably weighs at least 90lbs (starting with 50"), and we aren't getting any younger. That was another reason I was happy to get rid of mine. I sold it for 1/14th the cost. I was lucky to get anything for it at all. You have to *pay* places like Best Buy now to recycle it for you. New TV only weighs 30lbs...

LOL, time for you to hit the gym !

Cheers,

Scott

agreed, same with mine. Unless your arse is glued to the 'idiot box' (my mother always called it that) the $$ differential is minor and if need to worry about it then get a second job.

My plasma (I forget the maker) started developing lines in it after a few years. I gave it away.

I have an OLED now.  Which is better?  I did not have them at the same time using the same sources and calibrated to test.

I've got a 60" Pany Plasma that just keeps on looking good, no issues at all.

If you have a plasma and picture quality is of importance, its time to move on to current technology. It's just better.

My last-gen VT60 Panny 55" plasma is 4 years old and going strong. It looks great and has good features.
I'm an audio first guy, so whatever incremental video improvement is gained is not a priority.
I feel the same way about my 15 year old Avalon Opus speakers. They were $$$ used but I've not heard better speakers for my room at anywhere near the price.
When my stuff dies or big improvements become available at reasonable cost I'll step up the the latest and greatest, but I avoid having planned obsolescence make my decisions for me.

I have a older Samsung Plasma still putting out a excellent picture. It is a 50 inch model which was considered big when I purchased it.

A couple of guys I know have new 4k TV's, I can't stand the soap opera effect, it just looks terrible. I suppose it's the motion smoothing they have enabled but they seem happy so I haven't bothered to say anything. My plasma has an excellent film quality and no worries about motion.

I've been watching 4K shows via Amazon on my 4K OLED TV, and there's definitely a benefit to 4K.  It doesn't seem that huge, but it's noticeable.

It’s a feature they enabled. Mine has no such issues. Some TVs are better others with motion and for some reason there are people who like the soap opera effect. Dunno why. Not as popular as it used to be though.

I also bought the Sony X900F 65" TV for our townhome in Colorado Springs.  This TV blows away my 60" Panasonic ZT Plasma in our Ohio home.  Watching 4k and Dolby Vision(only at night as it is a bit dimmer but really beautiful) is such a treat!

The Sony X900F along with their top QLED models along with the LG QLED were the only models that bested the Panasonic ZT.

Regards

Randy

I just did the same - 55 inch Panasonic plasma moved to our bedroom after we bought a new Sony X900F. What an upgrade!
