Sharp SD-EX100 for $69
« on: 15 Nov 2011, 05:56 pm »
Some of you may recall all the buzz about the SD-EX111 mini system.  Its based on a 1-bit digi amp, and originally sold for nearly $500 but later closed out really inexpensively.  I haven't heard one, but they are evidently awfully nice sounding.  It appears from the spec sheets that the ex100 is the same amp with spring terminals instead of binding posts and a pair of packaged 2-way speakers. Here is a link to the Ebay auction.  The sellers have at least 7 right now.

I've been looking at mini-systems, as I'm trying to figure out what to do in my kitchen.  I'll use my speakers, of course, but I don't want a full-sized receiver.  I'm trying to decide how badly I want a USB input, which would disqualify this unit.  But, I thought others might be interested, as the 111 was so coveted.

And, I lied.  I see now that the 100 has half the sampling rate of the 111.  Not ideal, but it might still be a decent machine.  I just don't want to mislead anyone.http://sharp-world.com/products/1-bit/sd-ex100/index.html

Is this the same Sharp SD EX111 mentioned?  Overstock is selling it for $89 with no speakers.

The two are related for sure.

I heard a Vinnie modded 111, it was a nice piece.

Overstock is (somewhat ironically) out of stock!

I modified one of these back in the day (full RWA spec). It sounded good, but died eventually.

Before modifications it was marginal compared to any other amplifier I made. It takes a lot of out of production blackgate caps to really bring it into the spotlight. You could use other caps now, but no promises to bring it up to snuff.

For whatever difference it makes, the SD-EX100/H has 2.8MHz 1-bit amplifiers and the SD-EX111 has a "blistering 5.6MHz sampling speed" (from the Sharp archives).
