Wow, that is some major bass depth.  I want to see the SoundScape pit against the Vandersteen 5A!

I'm still thinking through this.  There are so many choices, but I've focused in on the wyred 4 sound sx-1000 monoblocks and the Van Alstine Ultra+ 550.  These are similarly priced and both clearly very high quality products.  It appears either would be a good choice with the SS 10's.

Anybody directly compare these two or have specific feedback on things to focus on that would be helpful?  Not sure how relevant this is, but quality at low to moderate volume levels will be particularly important to me.

thanks again.

Consider the DAC Cherry amps.  380 wpc and vastly outpace the Wyreds at 570 in the monos.  Having owned 7 Wyreds at one time I can say with confidence that $2kish for a Cherry will be better spent.

BigRed, Just curious.. have you tried Spectron amps? How do they compare with DAC cherry or Wyred? Thanks.

I run a Spectron Musician III MK.2 (Upgraded CuFT caps) with my HT-3s and the combo is excellent.

I heard Tommy's amp by Mike's and it is very nice. Never heard them side by side maybe next Rave by Mikes I'll bring mine.

The Spectron maybe is a little fuller sounding. Heard both in different systems, so it is hard to say.
Can't go wrong with either amp.

I was headed toward a Spectron but at that time there were some internal company issues and some quality problems going about.  While they worked them out I detoured to a 4800A and was very impressed.  So I went back to Tommy in this rebuild and am very happy.  Unequivocally a step up in dynamics from the Wyreds.

Wow, nice.  Why did I think they were $4000?  :duh:

Thanks BRM.

The more expensive versions are 4-5k.  This one is 5k:

I can loan him one very soon to try.

For half the cost of the Cherry Plus you can try a pair of Wyred4Sound SX-1000 monoblocks. I've been using them with my less-efficient HT1-TLs and they are excellent in every respect. I did have the AVA Fet-Valve 550 Ultra+ Double Die in my system over the summer, and the Wyred4Sound monoblocks are at least as good without the bulk, heat, power consumption, and restriction against using your own power cord (if you think that matters).

Happy listening!  :thumb:

Cherry amps are a different animal entirely using a proprietary design (mine!) that's expensive to produce and not based on pre-fab modules.

A head-to-head comparison is welcome any day with the no-holds-barred Cherry PLUS or its little brother Cherry JR...

Here is a review in Stereo Times of the Cherry PLUS (now <$4K):

Here is a review in Affordable Audio of the Cherry JR (now <$2K on special):

What are the performance/sonic differences between the two amps?

I haven't heard the W4S amps, so can't compare, but I did end up getting one of Tommy's demo units and am VERY happy with it and my Soundscapes.

Nice, which one of the Cherry amps do you have? I have my SoundScape 10s coming and I currently have a Cherry Jr. Loving the amp so far.
