Christmas! (A GR N3 build)
« on: 16 Jan 2010, 03:23 am »
I bought a chair the other day on some on-line furniture store .... 609 bucks. A beautiful leather slider with ottoman. Looked like the perfect listening chair. Free shipping it said. They called me today and said "mm sorry, we don't ship to the Territories ... it'll cost you $960.00" I respectfully and woefully declined their wonderful offer saying that I didn't really see the value in paying more than 50% of the cost of the chair just to have it shipped up here. I was somewhat bummered out. But life has a way of balancing itself out. The wife just left for the movies with a girlfriend and I was having a beer listening to the Rush in Rio dvd when I noticed the cat staring at the door. Sure enough there was someone there. A delivery person. GR packing tape all over the boxes. I thanked the fine young lady and I'm sure I signed something but as quickly as the boxes hit the living room floor I was peeling back said packing tape like a little kid at Christmas. I haven't felt that way in a long time. Thanks Danny. My N3 package arrived.

I have my father in law cutting out the cabinets (way out in Newfoundland ... another story entirely, but certainly a big part of this one ... may I introduce you to John, as good a Newfy as you're ever to meet) as I write and some bubinga waterfall veneer coming for it. I've read many posts and liked what ebag4 did with the raised speaker baffles so I'll be stealing that great idea. The sonicaps and goodies will be off to Sean tomorrow. And just because I've found this forum to be such a wonderful place and I've loved reading about the experience others have had in their build, I too will post here; pictures of the build and eventually my impression of the whole affair including a rank amateur review of the speakers themselves. I have a Virtue 1.2 coming (Thanks Seth et al!) with a 24v-26AH dual battery power supply wiring kit that I'm trying to coax out of Gary Dodd, so many of you will be familiar with this set up I think.

I love everybody at the moment!!

Regards
Dave

I can 'almost' feel your painbecause I have had people tell me that they don't ship international when I have told them I am in New Mexico.  They don't teach much geography here in the states anymore.

If you keep on the battery powered road (like I am, in spades) your AC considerations will be a non-player.  Gary has made me a believer.  I have been listening to my Buffer and Stereo amp for a few days, now.  Nothing but sweet, quiet music coming from those guys.  Gary is THE man when it comes to innovation in amplification.

Hey, Gary!!! INNOVATION IN AMPLIFACTION  .... a new motto, Dude.

And you are right.  This is my favorite place for audio communication, comaraderie and discussion.  Good info and no huge egos to contend with.

Keep us informed.

I ordered some Quad speaker cables from Seth also (that I received a few minutes ago) .... the 3m pair with spades and plugs. You know how when you get a quality piece of equipment it's just ... well, how do you put it? It's just a piece of wire right? Well my wife is calling it my porn. (The whole audio 'affair' actually.) Gary e-mailed me today and is getting my power supply charging kit ready. My father in-law ... ok, John, seems kosher with the idea of posting build pics.

This is fun!

This of course is ending up to be more than just about The N3. But quite simply, if I had not decided on building a speaker, and if I had not chosen this particular speaker, I likely would not have found the AudioCircle forums (ahem... 'circles') and I would not have become so engrossed in this whole affair. I'm pretty sure the wife will end up reading this. So whispering probably won't help much .... but I ordered another Virtue 2.1 from Seth to take advantage of the extended sale he had on them. I'm so excited I think I'll paint my den!

(ok it's never that bad, but I recently moved into this new home of mine and have managed to establish with my significantest other that the end bedroom is going to be MY den / listening room. In turn she get's another $1000.00 Siberian Forest Kitty. Or two.) Fine by me!)

Here's what my den / listening room looks like at the moment (and why I'll be painting eventually .. it was the previous owners children's room). We'll call this 'Phase one'. The kit (my other passion) will have to go elsewhere.

What is it about audio guys named Dave and drums.  Me, too, WAaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back in the day for a band named that Chob (often misspelled Choab).  Our recordings made a bunch of european 60's compliations and we never made any money from them.  All good fun in the wayback machine of life.

Dave, too

Lol Dave (like lol cats that may be a double entendre to mean jazz cats) ... my first band that played anywhere was called Childs Play for no reason I ever understood. Our first 'B' bar tour was called the "Get out of my jello tree" tour. Our vocalist at the time liked parading about in tight black spandex. I remember playing a bar in Moosejaw Saskatchewan called Bensons (why do I remember that?!!)... a pancake house during the day and a biker bar at night. Go figure. We started the sets without our singer, playing a couple of Kim Mitchell songs including "Oh War". It went over awesome. Then our singer came prancing up on stage in his black spandex and pink sequin running shoes as we moved into some rendition of oooh what a nite .... the guy in the front with the spider tatoo on his face was ... um ... unimpressed. I still have a scar over my right eye because I decided to help our sound guy whom was being force fed a beer out of a cowboy boot. I saw the punch coming for miles and still didn't have the where with all to duck.

Yea. Waaaaaaayback machine.

Dave, also

I'm thinkin' the three of us could have too much fun with all of this.  I always tell people I never was the man I used to be... but, then again, I think I was if I remember correctly.  It was the 60's: like th eold saying goes, "if you remember the 60's, you weren't really there!"

I do remember being long hair rock and rollers in a tour van, pulling into a cowboy bar in the middle of a blizzard and having a guy wheel around and look at our afro-ed keyboard player and say - "Hey, lookee yonder at the guy with the tumbleweed on his head!" and laughing really hard.  We ended up bringing our gear in and playing all night and having a great time.  Make friends or die....

There will never be another 60's, I don't know if that's a good thing or not but I do know I was damn glad to be there,,, what I remember of it.  :smoke:

I can't quite totally figure it out ... In my (soon to be) listening room is a slowly growing pile of audiophile grade gear. Every once in a while I have to just go fondle something. Like my Quad speaker cables I recently purchased from Seth.

Weird huh?

Ok!!!

John has e-mailed me that the No-Rez has showed up so now we can make a little progress. He sent me this pic just to tease but really there's not too much he can do without the Rez.       (That there is world class Newfy salt air on the other side of that window by the way.... to die for!)

I've been talking to the Ninja hisself (he's doing my network) and he's got me sold on an outboard x-over and enclosure for my N3's. Actually all he did was show me some pics I hope to pass along.
(He gave me permission to post these     drool on fellow phialists, drool on)

So. Back a couple of years I bought a music studio set-up: A dedicated small form pc with 750g of disc space, Sonar 7 recording software and a UH-25 Edirol USB 24/96 sound card dac amongst other things. I'm using this as my front end at the moment. I've asked about the Edirol but haven't had any opinions on it. Through my K-701s it's pretty darn good to these old ears. This will run through my Virtue M901 that I'm more than a little excited about. I'm guessing a sub to match this set up is next in line. Any opinions? What will work with my N3s? (My listening room is only 9 x 14).

Anyways. I'll be sending John Danny's speakers here shortly ... MY speakers here shortly - so he can fit them up to the front baffle (ala ebag4 ... awesome man!!).

Will keep the post!

John has spent the lat few days digging out of a snowstorm

Somehow he manages to find time to work on our speakers.

He's received the No-Rez. We have a few decisions to make, or more likely HE has a few decisions to make as to how the base will go on with the bottom braces. These pics show a prefit. He's meticulous and I like that.
