Dodd Pre / Buffer Tubes
« on: 6 Dec 2009, 09:53 pm »
I know in one thread there was mention of tubes from Danny.

What has everyone else tried and settled on?  I know the buffer is new so there aren't many of them but figured I would ask.

Did you get your buffer?

I know next to nothing about tubes.  Good idea, thanks for doing this.

I have the battery preamp and use Valvo 7308's (Philips France) and they sound the best to me of what I have tried.   Have tried the JJ E88CC's (the stock), Amperex BugleBoy 6DJ8's and the Valvo 7308's so far.

One day will try my Siemens CCa's, but that might be awhile.

I've not tried them in a Dodd Buffer - still trying to sell my Cary gear (harumph!), but the most musical variants of the 6DJ8/6922 family are the 7308s, like Rich said in his post.  I have used them in every location possible in tube gear since I discovered them a few years ago.  I've found the Amperex valves to be my favorite, but I have not tried the Valvo (Philips) brand.

Of 6922's, I like the Mullards the best.

YMMV

I am using the Amperex 7308's in mine with the orange printed labels. I like'em.  :thumb:

I have a Dodd battery powered preamp and I have tried the following tubes.

1958 Amperex D getters
1959 Amperex D getters
1970s A-Frame Amperex (green letters)
JJ E88CCs
1980s Amperex Bugle Boys
1965 Amperex USA white label 7308
Early 1960s Telefunken small print E88CCs.

My favorites (and current reference) are the 1965 7308 tubes.  A close second (and my backups) are the Telefunkens.

Me, too.

I have some EH 6H23's coming to try as drivers in the stereo amp.  I'm using JJ E88C's as phase splitters right now... jury is still out on these.  All of these are candidates.

Thanks for reviving this thread Jason.  So far my favorite has been my GE 5751 but I am wanting to get an Amperex 7308.  Unfortunately it seems that most of these sell in pairs...still looking.

Best,
Ed

Guys, while I look for a single Amperex 7308 (for less than $100) I thought I might pick up another tube to try.  Have any of you used any of these tubes and what did you think?  Is there one here that you preferred over the others, just looking for opinions:

6DJ8 Amperex Holland Bugle Boy -- large halo, no labels, early 1960's 6DJ8 8 $45.00
6DJ8 Amperex Holland Bugle Boy small halo -- mid 1960's 6DJ8 38 $40.00
6DJ8 Amperex Holland Bugle Boy STRONG -- large halo, no labels, early 1960's 80%gm 6DJ8 17 $20.00
6DJ8 Amperex Holland D-getter STRONG -- 1959 6DJ8 1 $30.00
6DJ8 Amperex Holland orange label -- A-frame dimple disc getter 6DJ8 8 $35.00
6DJ8 Amperex Holland orange label STRONG -- A-frame dimple disc getter

Best,
Ed

If I remember correctly Steven has a custom integrated built by Gary.

Steven, there are pairs and quads listed on Ebay for the US and at Audiogon.com.

Thanks Ed, I will check there. Correct, my Dodd had 4 x EL84 and 4 x E88CC, all JJs.

Keen to try something better, not much rush though (and even less knowledge...) :)

I am also looking at Amperex 7308s and Bugle Boys...

Which Bugle Boy should I look for?  What is the voltage on these two tubes?
