RMAF 2009
« on: 4 Oct 2009, 11:49 am »
Hi All,

Someone was nice enough to forward me this post in AudioCircle under the "Shows and Events" topic regarding the 2009 Rocky Mountain Audio Fest Show Report.

Janszen/Bryston/Wadia:

"Big electrostatics driven by world class Bryston electronics, the sound was like a live mike feed. If you like your music detailed to the extreme this is a system to check out.

"Keith Don't Go" was mesmerizing!"

I have to admit, I've rearranged my gear recently and the new setup sounds better. It's funny because around the same time I picked up the Nils Lofgren: Live Acoustic disc with "Keith Don't Go" on there....

Is it a pretty, polished recording...nope. But it's electric-acoustic guitar playing captured in a way as if you were there. I had not even heard of the song/disc before a couple months ago.

I'll agree with the review snippett above on this one, for me that tune makes you smile played through the 14B and BDA-1 8)

I can only imagine what it sounds like on the big electrostatics with the 28Bs.

Looks like the MB2/XBD combo was driven with just a single 7B per side?

Correct - I guess PMC felt given the small room?

It's that (can't remember the name) acoustic room tuning device, it was being demo'ed on the mezzanine level, Longs peak room with those God-awful seashell looking speakers.

Regarding the Janzen / Bryston match-up, I agree it sounded quite good ! but for 27k the Janzens would not be my first choice.........

Hi twitch54,

Did you hear the PMC room and could any of the Synergistic Research rooms demo with and without room tuning devices?

PMC Fact 8, $10,999/pair

A sleek new transmission line-equipped floorstander from the famous monitor maker PMC. Drivers include two 5 "-inch PMC mid-bass drivers plus a not quite 1-inch Sonomex soft dome tweeter.

The sound: very pure and well-defined, with "for all intents and purposes" full range bass extension.

Fact 8 on left:

james, yes I enjoyed the Fact 8's but felt they were no way 11k worth of sound, IMO. The small monitors represented a much better value.

In so far as the Syn Research room tunning device.......again, not impressed. In so far as rooms that did acoustically impress.........Merlin, Harbeth, ARC/Wilson and ARC/Vanderstein

james.........I think J. Atkinson actually was in the process of changing his hearing aide batteries during that demonstration !  :icon_lol:  on the serious side I won't argue or deny their effect rather say that I subscribe to more conventional room acoustic treaments. truth be told I don't even know how much those spheres cost ??

Hi James!

I heard the Fact at the High End in Munich.
They are quite expensive (perhaps the small size makes this impression), but I think they were one of the best speakers at the show!
Very clear with phenomenal bass, very well balanced over the whole range. Really able to play everything with absolute ease.

Of course, Bryston CDP and 4B SST contributed a lot to the performance, I guess...  :thumb:

The guys from PMC were very down to earth - I liked that very much!
Ok, one of them said: "Bryston and PMC is a cooperation made in heaven!" - But I think he is right!

How does the Fact compare to the PB1 and what are the differences?  Seems they are right in the same price range and look similar except for the missing transmission line vent.

Hello gents! I'm actually here at AES in NYC... First, the price for the fact 8 has been dropped to $9850. We were incredibly pleased with the sound. Bryston, synergistic research and PMC make for a very cohesive and balanced sound. We were heaped with praise from all over... The fact 8 really was re star of the show. In the room next door with the mb2xbdi we were able to tone down the boominess a bit. Nothing but compliments on the demo material we were playing... My favorite compliment being: "cheers to you mate for not playing the binky bonky audiophile shit!"... Which there was plenty to go around : |

A most gracious thank you goes to James for allowing us his spectacular kit. Which was indeed a major part of what made our sound so special for a good number of guests.

As for the skeptics, the acoustic art system did indeed help. If you have a dealer with one available for demo I highly recommend checking it out. They are a lot of fun.

Hi Ian, I think you did a great job at the show!  The room is always the enemy.

PM me or call me if you are still in NYC and want to grab a bite or two. :)
