New N3 kit (Neo series)!
« on: 13 Feb 2009, 07:01 pm »

I just finished the crossover design for this one. It turned out great!

I know a bunch of you guys have been waiting on this one for a little while. Sorry for the delay.

I can now start shipping the kits. I'll put some prices together later today.

Here are the measured responses. This one is 10 degrees off axis:

Talk about a smooth woofer response.... Here is the on axis crossover response:

Off axis horizontal response is excellent! Remember, each line is only 5db.

Really clean CSD. This is really where it's at.

And the impedance curve showing that the transmission line is tuned to 40Hz.

And for those of you used to looking at frequency response graphs posted by the rest of the industry, here is one for you on a 10db scale.

Okay here is the per pair pricing:

The basic kit is $369.00 The basic kits uses Erse poly caps, Gen.2 Sonicap By-pass caps in the tweeter circuit, Link resistors, GR binding post cups, 16 gauge high purity OCF wire with polyethylene jacket, brass floor spikes, etc.

Add Sonicaps and Mills resistors: + $115
Add Vampire binding posts: + $31.50
Add Cardas binding posts: + $58
Add JPS Labs wire (42 feet): + 95.00
Add Shielded woofer: + $12

A single unit (center channel) comes with the shielded woofers, needs only 14 feet of wire, and does not include floor spikes. Price is $185. each.

Add Sonicaps and Mills resistors: + $57.50
Add Vampire binding posts: + $15.75
Add Cardas binding posts: + $29.00
Add JPS Labs wire (14 feet): + 42.00

Nice!  How do they sound compared to the other Neo Kits?

Cheers,

this is terrific!

just a question, danny..

i got x-mtm's.

would it be possible for this kit to work in that enclosure or would it be a bad idea?

Thanks!

Nice work Danny. Should be a hot seller. Definitely an upgrade over the AV-3.

Best,
Anand.

Curious as well, I'm another x-mtm owner and would be interested in doing something similar to Stereodude's x-sls Neo 2 conversion.

The X-MTM uses larger woofers and the box volume is a little more than what's needed for this design.

The boxes are pretty easy to build: http://www.gr-research.com/pdf/Neo3box.pdf

Here is the sealed box design that can be used as a center channel: http://www.gr-research.com/pdf/Neo3S.pdf

I think this kit has a 5.25" woofer and the X-MTM has 6.5" woofers, so it's probably not possible.

Edit: B10 by Danny...

Danny,   Did u mention in your previous post elsewhere that these will drop into an av3 set-up with with mod done to the front baffle for the ribbon?

Upgrading my AV3's would be nice!

6"-8" from rear wall?
Is there any downside sonically to building the speaker with the TL port to the front of the cabinet? I only have 6"-8" to play with from the rear wall.

Has anyone heard the A/V-3's built in this configuration and placed close to the rear wall?

If that is all the space that you have then flip flop the transmission line and run it out the front. It will sound just as good in the front. The limitation to have it in the front is that you get what you get. With it in the rear, you can vary the distance from the rear wall and vary the coupling and gain from the rear wall.

With the TL port in the front would the system integrate well with one of the direct servo subs in a sealed enclosure?

The low -3db of 40Hz means a low crossover point to the sub and will make it even easier to integrate.

What is the -3db for the sealed version?

Thanks for getting this out Danny.  How many sheets of No-Rez will be needed for the pair?  I looked at the AV-3 but didn't see the No-Rez requirements there.

Thanks,
Ed

Anechoic will be in the upper 80's. In room response is more likely to be in the mid to upper 70's depending on what you have around it.

I was thinking that it will take 2 and a half sheets. Hey Eric? How many sheets did you use up in this pair?

Danny I am running a Ref100 for a center channel w/ ob/7's. While its not a bad match would the N3 center be a better sonic choice?
