All,

Thanks for all your participation so far!

As you probably know, I have been extremely happy with the DACT CT2 stepped attenuator volume control.  In fact, I offer it as an upgrade/customization option:

I have been in contact with John of Bent Audio and have used his DACT stepper motor remote control kit.  It is awesome because it does not get in the signal path in any way, and the control board turns itself off (well, it is really SLEEP mode) when not in use....eliminating the potential for noise, and in the case of my amps, eliminating waste of battery life.

Long story short... I will most likely be offering this as an option for those who want a remote controlled DACT.  Yes, the DACT CT2 and the remote control kit are not as cheap as a motorized Alps pot kit, but sonically the DACT is in a completely different class and its reliability is top-notch.

Thanks again for all your feedback,

Vinnie

Hi,

  Talking about volume control...

I think this is one thing that most people over look. Think about it... people pay alot for better expensive parts inside the component... high quality cap, resistor, silver wire and etc. Then you have this carbon/plastics conductive volume control :o Even the best one still have tracking, balance and sound quality degradation problem. :?

So, one of the first thing I upgrade in my pre is the volume control to step ladder type. It was worth it.  :D

The DACT CT2 looks very good. Also there is a Welborne Lab one. Quite tempting... if I didn't have the one I have now I might go for this. :D
http://www.welbornelabs.com/remote.htm

Both DATC and Welborne would be a great upgrade to any old carbon/plastic based volume control. And I think the computer control shouldn't have much if any impact on sound.

Anyway, for me I'm just going to stick with old fashion... Greyhill switch+ non-magnetic Holco resistors ladder type that I bought from Welborne Lab a while back in my pre right now. :D

Take care all,
Buddy :thumb:

So, for clarification, is the DACT CT2 stepped attenuator volume control itself (sans the remote) also an option, or is that native to the unit? Your original premise was that no upgrades would be possible since everything would be cherry.

Do you have an ETA for a price disclosure?

Hi Seminarian,

Yes, the remote control for the DACT stepped attenenuator will be an option.  I wouldn't call it an upgrade because it does not improve the sound quality.

It is just an added feature for those who desire a remote volume control.

Best,

The real question is this:
" is the DACT CT2 stepped attenuator volume control itself (sans the remote) also an option, or is that native to the unit?"

Hi Seminarian,

I still haven't decided if the DACT volume control will be native to the unit or an option.

It seems like MANY of my Clari-T customers who use an active preamp have the problem of too much gain.  Having a high-quality stepped attenuator such as the DACT CT2 built into the amp has two advantages:

1) The input to the amp (from an active preamp) can be attenuated to a level that would allow for the most useable range of volume control from the active preamp.

2) For those who are not using a premap, a built-in volume control is needed in most cases and using a very high quality stepped attenuator such as the DACT CT2 offers excellent sound quality and reliability.

Good question.  I am still figuring out what I am going to do regarding the enclosure and options.  Once this is figured out, I will have pricing info.  I am planning ot have this all figured out by next month.

Best regards,
