This is exciting to hear Mike.  I hope you pull it off.  What inputs and outputs will it have?  Will it be PCM and/or DSD?

At this price point it will need to be USB only. The software engine will act as a virtual sound card that any media player can output either PCM or DSD to and get phenomenal results. What will be of most importance is the job the studio did recording. Not the format.

What is the need for virtual sound card s/w for USB DAC ? It will just be async USB. will it work with Windows ?

So you can point any media player to the dsp engine. Yes Windows, OSX and Linux.

The VSC will work similar to hifi cable:

Only it will have an internal DSP engine that can be controlled remotely by any tablet or smartphone.

What outputs?  Balanced, single end?

With 2 opamps single ended. With 4 opamps balanced.

Yes they will take 990/2520 type discrete opamps. So those would work. Anything from the Fivefish DOA 17’s:

http://www.fivefishstudios.com/diy/doa17/

 To the Weiss OP2-BP’s:

http://www.weiss.ch/files/downloads/op1-bp/OP1-BP-Datasheet-R1.pdf

Probably 15 compatible opamps available.

Also I never said this DAC couldn’t beat my Purestream. Just not with under $500 invested. 4 of the Weiss OP2-BP’s cost $700 alone. But 2 of the DIY five fish units for single ended only cost $50.

Similar to this option?

That’s my old DAC that you already have.  But similar analog board concept.

With this DAC there’s going to be 1 main motherboard, and all options will plug into sockets. Makes it way easier to build for DIY folks. Also very little internal wiring. Basically just a short swappable output harness like the Purepower amp. And a short DC input cable to the board.

Sorry Mike, but this all sounds too good to be true.

Well you will see. I already have 25 Purestream’s in the field. Some notable DAC’s clients claimed it beat were the Chord Dave and Aqua Formula. 1 client of mine sold his Aqua Formula after buying the Purestream. This new DAC will be a new and better engineered version.

No need to go crazy. No miracles here. Major reason for the low cost is:

1: The majority of the parts folks will be buying at parts cost.
2: The SRC/SDM engine will run in software I’m already developing for my OEM systems.

Typical commercial DAC markup is BOMx10. When you’re only paying BOMx1, no doubt you can get a better product for the money. BOM means Bill of materials.
