Interesting....  diskless is getting pretty small.    I think Computer Audio will take over everything eventually, but there will be format (meaning source) challenges before it gets there.

I just bought one. My plan is to use it in an amp to monitor operating conditions. We shall see.

Think one of these is powerful enough to make a NAS into a music server?
All it needs to do is run one program.

Sure!  It's actually a fairly powerful Linux platform.  It can probably BE the music server, actually, instead of using it to front a NAS, though that should work as well.  A Google search will turn up a number of people doing this, and the software needed.

Here is one source for Pi music server stuff:

You should be comfortable with hooking things up and it would definitely help to know some Linux.  To date, nobody I know is providing a "plug and play" solution for the Pi, even the so-called "complete Raspberry Pi" kits you see on ebay and other places still need a case, video/keyboard, etc.

Except that if you're gonna use it under Linux it will run more than one program, whether you like it or not.

I got one for my son for Xmas.  He had it up and running in a few hours.  Small touch screens are now popping up.  Do I see a Raspberry Touch in my future?

What are you planning on doing with it?

Everyday I find more things I want to do.
This whole thing started because I want to learn some programming.
The first thing I want to do is put something in my new F5T that will monitor all the FETs temp and maybe bias. Then display it on a cool screen. We shall see. Seems like over kill for a Pi so maybe a few Arduinos will work. That said the Pi are only $35 so who cares if its overkill.

What language do you have to program in?  My days of hard programming are over.   I do a ton of Matlab and some R programming at work, but that is 4GL, which is easy.   Screw dynamically allocating and deallocating memory (C flashbacks).

Python is great to learn!  Its super powerful.  The top guys in my group are Python programmers and they never seem to be lacking in demand.

Finally the Raspberry Pi I ordered months ago arrived and an hour later I had it feeding tunes to a wadia 151PowerDac mini.    Music files mounted from a network share and controlling it with the mPod app.     The open-source and DIY community really knocked this one out of the park in terms of value.

Instead of a network share device, could you use a USB hard drive plugged directly into the Pi for this?  I am looking for a way to make a mini music server for RV use that I can use with a portable dac/headphone amp.
