It’s the End of the World as We Know it……
« on: 23 Aug 2012, 09:22 pm »
….and I feel fine!

OK guys, it’s time for another gathering!

This time it’s going to be an End Of The World Party!

OK, OK, I know, it’s not 12-21-12 yet BUT September 22 is 12 weeks, 12 days and 12 hours before the legitimate EOTW (according to the Mayans).

So, I thought to myself….”Self….we need to have a party”. We certainly don’t want to wait until the day the world ends. So let’s back it up a few months using a bunch of 1s and 2s paying tribute to our literal drop dead date. So doing some sideways math, I landed on Saturday 9/22.

Visit
This will be the usual gathering, more visiting than actual listening (which is a good thing). That means the girls are invited too. This won’t be a hardcore audiophile wonkfest. We won’t be doing any gear swapping, just visiting and doing some non-critical listening. We’ll get things kicked off around 2:00 or so and go until whenever.

Let’s pray for a nice day because if this turns out like some of the other events, we could top 50 people. My humble abode won’t be able to handle that many if we get rain so we’ll need the back patio for overflow. The other thing (since I haven’t hosted in a while), we have completely redone the basement. The old blue room has lost most of its seating as has the Redrum. I’m guessing, but with folding chairs the new Reference Room can handle about ten people and the Redrum will be able to do about four. The Vintage Room upstairs can still do three and the Office two. The Home Theater can do five. All in it looks like we have seating for about 24 not including the back Patio.

Listen
So, here’s a thought. Since the big events are, well, big…and noisy, they aren’t the most conducive to listening if that’s what your goal is. If you want to do some serious listening, plan on coming by a week earlier on the 15th. I’ll be here bach’n it while my lovely bride is out in Oregon at her niece’s wedding. That or if you just want to hang and listen to some tunes, come on by a week early. We’ll order a pizza, drink some beers and have a listen to the various systems. Be sure to send me a PM or state in your post if you want to partake.

Systems
Not too much has changed around the ole homestead. Here is a link to my gallery if you want a visual. Scroll to the bottom of the page for the latest pics.

Parking
One last thing, parking for this many people won’t work at my house. I can handle maybe ten cars if it’s dry. This year we’ll try something different (since the neighbors got a little cranked last time). I’m going to have my future son-in-law shuttle you guys back and forth to a nearby parking lot. As we get closer to the EOTW, I’ll post the location of the lot and his cell number. All you’ll have to do is park, call and within a couple minutes he’ll be there to pick you up.

If you come out Hwy 44 and get off at the Pacific exit 257, turn right on Viaduct Street. Turn left on Thornton Road and you will see FIREWORKS WORLD on your right. That is where you'll park and my future son-in-law Eric will pick you up. This lot is only a couple of minutes from the house.

Here are a couple of pics that will give you a visual of where to park.

So there we have it. Mark your calendars. The EOTW Party is Saturday, September 22 starting around 2:00. If you want to spend a bit more quality time with one of the systems without all the distractions of a big crowd, plan on coming by a week early (see above).

Be sure to invite the girls and please post if you are going to make it and how many are coming with you and if you are bringing a side dish. I’ll update this post as we get responses.

DAMN!  It's also the BIG party in STL marking the Girl Scouts' 100th birthday (not the girls, the organization :duh:) and I am hauling a bunch of student design teams up there!

Sorry, but when I get back home late that night I'll crank some tunes in honor of the end of the world!

BTW, wanna have some fun?  If you know anyone that believes in that 9/22 stuff, just before midnight sneak in their yard and precisely at 12 yank their electric meter off the wall.   :icon_twisted:

Gosh, I could attend this end of the world gathering and after a couple of brews, die a happy man, not worrying whether cheesy 2012 movie bombastics happen or not!  Great stuff Scott.

Crap!  It's also the date for free electronics disposal drop-off here!  I was going to hang around and snare vintage audio gear.   :duh:

There's a whole host of theme based stuff we play along with 2112;
Oingo Boingo - Dead Mans Party
U2 - Until the End of the World
Black Sabbath - Hand of Doom, Virtual Death,
Blind Faith- Presence of the Lord
Chris Cornell - Finally Forever, Silence the Voices, Preaching the End of the World, Wave Goodbye
Coldplay - Warning Sign
Creed - Are You Ready?, Wash Away those Years

...and a ton more

If it really is the end of the world then you have to have some Aphrodites Child and then Blue Oyster Cults Don't Fear The Reaper.

Maybe kick it off with Bad Moon Risin' by Creedence and wind down the festivities with The End by the Doors?

P.S.
I think I'll put on When The Music's Over to get in the swing of things.
It's a shame, I was having a good time, too.

Hey all,
There's a fellow coming that y'all haven't met yet. He's the guy I built the last set of open baffle speakers for.
His name is Tony and is from Ballwin. I won't be able to make it, so please consider this the formal introduction.

To give a bit of his history, he's been involved in the audio industry longer than I been alive.
Yea, he's THAT old.  :o
(sorry Tony)

Please give him a warm GAS welcome.

Bob
