Cornet 2 Rectifier List?
« on: 5 May 2012, 01:37 am »
Is there a list of the rectifiers that can be used with Cornet 2? Would be nice... 8)

The search AC engine is your friend!  Then reinforce with Google.

Jim's Butcher's Bill calls out the Sovtek 5Y3GT (unlike a "real" 5Y3GT, the Sovtek is indirectly heated, hence a slower power ramp)

I use:
Bendidx 6106
GE 6087
(I like the sonics and the slow power ramp from these)

Others have used:

Mullard 5AR4 Metal base,
Mullard 5AR4 Fat base,
Mullard  other 5AR4,
Amperex 5AR4

RCA-Sylvania-Raytheon-Mazda, etc.  5Y3GT's,
Sylvania-Raytheon-Zenith-RCA 5V4's

Plus many more variations have been tried. The voltage drops differ, so always check the spec sheets.  The B+ voltage, measured after R221,  should be 330v.  You may need to tweak the values of R220 and R221 to achieve 330v with  any other rectifier than Jim's spec.

I use a 5V4GA RCA, NOS/NIB, branded CBS with excellent results, and it is the preferred indirectly heated tube.

The heater voltage (H+) needs to be adjusted with every rectifier change so it is around 6.2-6.3 volts. The heater voltage thread is here:

So we need to adjust the heater voltage even if we change a 5Y3GT with a 5Y3GT?  If its the same brand tube?

Thanks

Full solution for the heating voltage stabilization is - regulated power supply, which is achievable as mentioned in several posts earlier.
In other way - I don't think you should bother about the voltages greatly - according to the USA standards - the voltage could swing from 114 to 126V (+/-5% deviation), which normally led to (middle point 6.2V) 5.89-6.51V heater voltage changes. Tuning the resistor every time is unpractical, so...

O.k So far we have:

6106
6087
5AR4
5Y3GT
5V4

I used a Mazda 5y3gb and a Visseaux 5y3gb. Anyone know if a 5z3, 5u4g, type 80 Will work? Probably need to add a 4 pin socket adapter?

Type 80 is a mercury vapor tube allowing even higher current.  Not needed. The C2 is a preamp.  The tube current draw is low.  Check the data sheets for the rectifier tube specs.

This is a valuable tube data base site:

Although written for guitar amps, this is a helpful relative reference:

No reason to over think this.

Sorry but noone is over thinking this. It's simple request for customers to know which types of rectifiers are interchangeable. I always thought the type 80 was an equivalent to the 5y3 except for the pins:
