Border Patrol Dac

Hi,

This has garnered a lot of positive press lately.  Anyone here have any personal experiences with it.  I believe it'll be shown at CAF which starts tomorrow (can't make it myself due to a great deal on a First Watt M2).

Thanks for any input,
Kirk

Hi Kirk!

I have owned this DAC for about 6 months.  I have the SE version with both inputs. It replaced a Metrum Musette in my system.  All of my CDs are ripped to a SalkStreamplayer Gen III, and I also stream Tidal.  This DAC is absolutely one of the best audio purchases I have ever made. Obviously it has a limited feature set and is geared for Redbook, but if you are streaming ripped Redbook or spinning silver discs I don't think you could do any better without really spending some big bucks.

At CAF, we'll also have the Border Patrol DAC SE at our headphone table. I have a lot of good things to say, but I'm surely biased.

Don't know about the DAC but I've seen their other stuff at CAF several shows.  Very well made and they sound really nice.

The Border Patrol is a wonderful DAC - easy to use, well made, glorious sound. Makes other DACs I've heard (some significantly more expensive) sound like hifi, in all those not-so-good ways. I'm off the upgrade train on this component...

I might should mention I'm currently using a NAD C510 (same internals as the M51).  No real complaints.  My experience at shops & shows is that the best systems are almost always shown with vinyl, and more 'entry-level' systems with digital.  That said, from what I have heard, I don't necessarily think there's anything 'wrong' with Delta-Sigma like some do, just that R2R has sounded more natural.

However they've previously all been out of my budget (Lampizator, MSB).  Now it seems that all of a sudden there's a plethora of affordable choices (see also Metrum & Soekris).

Thanks for all the replies.

Not to detract from the OP, but dB Audio Labs has a new R2R DAC out as well. [I haven't heard it. I haven't heard the Border Patrol DAC either.] I wonder how they compare?

Maybe I could arrange for a trial in February, 2018.... :)
