..This SALE is for a pair of the last edition of the ESS AMT-Monitors (rubber surrounds w/full basket passive).

 - Flagship model.....in Excellent condition, physical and operational. Almost MINT....tiny nick (filled) on Walnut edging that can easily be replaced to bring back to MINT. Sides, grilles and drivers are as good as you can ever hope to find.....9.5. For the audiophile collector.

 - (Heil drivers) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Motion_Transformer

 - for LOCAL pick up (ONLY) at 20017 Washington DC. ...Cash Sale - <STRIKE>$1400.00</STRIKE> They weigh 110 lbs apiece. Hooked up for audition. -  -reduced price- $1150.00

.....Four unpublished revisions took place on those AMT MONITORS. None of these four were labeled anything other than, AMT MONITOR.

 - Early versions were with silver AMT units, metalized capacitor films, bextrene woofer cones w/ open cell foam surrounds, and .75in styrene disc radiators on the aluminum rings w/ the same suspension.

1st mid-build revisions came with flat black AMT units, bextrene woofer cones w/ rolled-edge treated surrounds, and .5in styrene discs w/ open cell foam suspension.

2nd mid-build revisions incorporate a huge change to the radiator, they were made to reflect the same outer rolled-edge suspension of the bextrene woofer and updated to a conical bextrene passive. When this radiator was introduced, it attached to an entire cast woofer frame (less the magnet and motor structure) obviously. The inner coil area behind the dual dustcaps was sealed up with an inverted pulp disc.

Final build revision on the AMT MONITOR  came when they utilized the SBR (styrene butadiene rubber) half-roll suspension on both the bextrene woofer and conical bextrene radiator. This final build was in production during the outphasing of the 1B towers hence the SBR suspension changeover, which the 1C line of towers took on exclusively.

 - SPECs below: - "Monitor series" 2nd column of 3...but w/ rubber surrounds and conical bextrene passives.

.....by the way!!! AC members are welcome to audition them. They are a definite CLASSIC - in the realm of the Allison 1 - Magnepan Typani - Klipschorn and a few others of that Classic period of audio.  You know what is interesting - Klipschhorns & Magnepan continuously survived, while Allison and ESS have been reincarnated. Wonder if they ever will bring back the Typani - 3 panel x2?

This brings back great memories!  I had a pair of those in the 70's and they were a ton of fun.
Weren't they about $1500 or so new?  I thought that was sheer lunacy back then, but bought em
anyway.

Who would have ever guessed speakers would end up having another zero (or two) on the end
in the 21st century?

Whoever gets these will be really lucky.  If I lived nearby, I'd buy em just for old times sake...

In 1976 I auditioned the Heil ESS, the Ohm F (couldn't afford the A), and Design Acoustics D-12- all ground breaking designs for their time, and all excellent speakers in their day.

I liked the Heil best for treble, the Ohm A for best overall (but didn't have the power to drive them, and the the D-12 for orchestral work.  I still have the D-12's after all these years, and they do a very nice job for HT- and still sound pretty good for big orchestra pieces.

Lusted after these back in the day!  Too bad you aren't on the west coast, I'd be very interested.

Thanks for the link to their new website.  I will drop them an email to see if they have any dealers yet.

 - another pic of the new version of the Monitors from CES audio Show last month.

 Quote: from Stereo Times
"Always a fan of Oscar Heil's Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeter, so it was absolutely exhilarating to see ESS Labs resurrected here at CES with an all-new line of affordable loudspeakers. I couldn't believe the models below retailed for less than $4k!! Hope to see and hear more from this historic product. "

....weekly bump....if you are in the Washington DC area....feel free just to audition them while they are here. Definitely a Classic....and just recently brought back into production. That says something about their design.
