There were 100,000 people, mostly camping.

In the last 1.5 years, in Denmark i have heard Josh Ritter, Neko Case, New Pornographers, Death Cab for Cutie, RilKiley, Dolorean, Damion Jurado, Bright Eyes, Jenny Lewis+Watson Twins, John Vanderslice, Jonathon Rice, oh Dan Lanlois.

Indie music is just getting popular.

I would die to see Jay Farrar!

Just saw Kenny Burrells 75th bday show at Yoshis.
Wow.
I can't wait to have 2ch audio that does a rim shot or the depth of a hollow body gibson like a real show.

In the last month:

Melissa Ethridge:
Very sad concert.  The band consisted of a drummer, bass & 2 guitars including Melissa.
Melissa sounded fine but the band sounded like mush.  Need to fire the sound man and probably the bass player as well.  Crowd was 99% lesbian and they obvioulsy didn't care how bad the sound was because they stood up for a great deal of the show and went wild after each song.  Melissa really played and spoke to her girls and while I have no problem with gay, it got tiresome.  It was a wasted night.

Thursday night:
Drove to Oklahoma with another couple to see HEART.
Simply as good as it gets.  They can still rock the house.
I know a lot of people put them down & I just don't get it.
I've been going to concerts for over 30 years and the only performance that tops theirs was Janis Joplin. :thumb:

Ryan Adams and the Cardinals @ the Vogue in Indy. Always a crap shoot w/ the tempermental though brilliant young Ryan. This time it seems he's fallen in love w/ his guitar playing (and his damn effects pedals) so there was WAY too much jamming. Not nearly as good as a year ago or so in Louisville when he was in love w/ his piano. Then, he did this super slow version of the Stones "Brown Sugar" that was so absolutely filthy/sexy it just blew the audience away.

Jonathan Edwards @ a local, free outdoor town concert.  You may remember Edwards from the early 70s-he had a couple of suprise hits off his 1971 self titled album (Sunshine, Shanty, Emma) then faded from public view.  The venue is only fair, nice friendly atmosphere, but lord it seems like half the people in the audience chatter nonstop.

A few weeks earlier I saw Tom Rush there.  I saw Rush a few years ago at the same place and he was excellent then.  This time Rush was a huge disappointment-his voice just wasn't there, the performances were tepid and even the jokes/stage banter were carried over from before.

Since I hadn't heard of anything Edwards had done since 1975 or so, I wasn't expecting too much.  It was a beautiful summer evening and the place was packed.  Edwards put on a tremendous one person show-full of energy, very warm relationship with the crowd and great songs.  His voice sounded just as good as it did 35 years ago (I was I could say the same) and he must be taking care of himself-he announced he just turned 60 the week before, but his body was more like a thirty year olds.

I highly reccommend checking out Jonathan Edwards if he comes to your area, it will be a hugely pleasant surprise.

Disney Theater of the Stars production of Beauty and the Beast at Wolf Trap last night.  It was a ho-hum, blase affair as far as broadway musicals go.  Belle had good voice but orchestra and chorus were middling.  Acoustic blending with special effect and orchestra/choral music was not seamless.  But it was all okay since we weren't really expecting a first rate broadway production.  What made this special was that it was our first time taking our 4 year old daughter to the big "house" (Filene Center) at Wolf Trap for an "adult" show.  We did our picnic with her running around bare feet most of the time and then got to our seats.  The Beast really freaked her out.  She alternately sat in our laps and was spell bound.  Just before the intermission, she broke into tears and wanted to go home because it was too scary.  We went out for a potty break and talked it over with her.  Only after we assured that the beast is learning to behave with manners in order to become a prince again, did she relented to come back for the final act.  After the show, she took her time touring the pit and the stage and talked to couple of musicians and was fascinated with a bass clarinet, which she noted was taller than her.  As we walked back to the car, she pronounced it the "best show she ever saw, forever."  It was a good show.

Let's talk about the present.  Pretty excited about the next few weeks.  Going to see Ben Harper tomorrow, CSN this weekend.  John Mayer next weekend. And Edwin McCain early October.  Never seen any of them so looking forward to it.

Helps having a brother-in-law in the ticket business.

Jeff

John Fogerty..."Long Road Home Tour",  a week or so ago. He was fantastic and I had forgot what a GREAT guitar player he is. They did all the old "CCR" stuff along with some new stuff. Willie Nelson opened up for him...nice of Willie to do that.

Funny...some of our crowd thought we were going to a Willie Nelson concert...asked me who John Fogerty was?

Brooks & Dunn, with Sugarland opening.

Sugarland was the highlight, imo.

Brooks & Dunn seemed too cock, going though the motions, perhaps.

Earlier tonight - Leo Kottke at Spirit Square (an old church auditorium in downtown Charlotte)

Guitarist extraordinaire, had us rolling on the floor at times with his monologue. He's 60!

Plays the 6 and 12 string guitar with a driving beat and amazing melody lines and dynamic tones and with some slide thrown in to amazing effect. He sits down when he plays and his feet dance around.

He mentioned that he used to be the closing act on a tour with Steve Goodman. Anyone hear of him?

Update : He wrote "City of New Orleans" and mentored John Prine. Had 11 Albums and 9 posthumous albums after dying of leukemia. Also wrote "You Never Even Call Me By My Name".

It was a gut wrencher.  The orchestral music was stronger than the vocals in the composition.  The singers did a very good job of singing the score but I left wanting more from the singing.  In a weird way, I felt like the orchestra was a great soundtrack but the actors were "singing" their narrative lines.  I can see few place where an "aria" would been great but, alas, the modern tact on the opera is toward "dialogs."  Nevertheless, the opera moved me, as did the movie and the book.  In fact, there were moments when I thought it was too much to bear.  Sad songs usually bring serenity for me but this opera was just emotionally draining.  The end was very Jobian.  The narrator sings, "God, where were you in Auschwitz?"  The response to that was a fitting, "Where was Man?"  We came back and gave our daughter a fierce hug - a very long hug.

Saw the John Scofield "Ray Charles" band last night with my lovely wife at Leheigh U.

What to say? He's my favorite guitarist - the complete package.

We had a great time, but the audiophile in me was tortured bacause Mavis Staples' voice was panned to the right of the guitar while she was on the other side on stage!

Leo Kottke has been on the scene for years. A former protege of John Fahey, I think. Some of his early '70's work, like "Greenhouse" still holds up today.
