Quick interconnect question
« on: 30 Jul 2016, 04:10 pm »
I have an audio interface I'm using as my PC's sound card essentially. I use an Ultra EC preamp attached to it, TRS out from the interface to RCA on the preamp.

In the interface software I have three choices of Line levels for the outputs: Monitor, Line +4, and Line -10. I spent half of last night screwing around because I didn't realize that the Monitor setting was active, and I had extremely low output.

Using the +4 or -10 seems to match levels much better and provides much more output. Is one "more safe" or "better" than the other? I think generally +4 is considered for "pro" hookups and -10 for "consumer", but I really don't know where those distinctions come from.

If you are using the EC for volume control, I would suggest the setting that gives you a normal (80-85db) listening level in the 10-2 o'clock position with the volume control.  That allows for more low level settings.

I would use the -10 setting so that the device does not over-drive the input board.
