Title: upgrade to 14b3 or 7b3?
Post by: amghoon on 13 Feb 2018, 06:31 pm
Hi all,

I just bought a refurbished 4b3 and am loving it. It's my first Bryston product. I'm running it with a Schiit Freya tube pre and LS50s. Since the LS50s are just temporary, I'm wondering if I should swap it for a pair of 7b3s or a 14b3 as I know I'll always be curious if I should have spent the extra $$ and went with one of the big boys. For those that have heard the 4b3 and one or both of the others, is there a big difference?

Thanks in advance for any input!

I recently traded in a 4B SST2 towards the purchase of a pair of 7B3 amps, but have never done a comparison to the 4B3.  The 7B3 will definitely go louder than the 4B3 and has more current capacity.  If you do decide to upgrade to the 14B3 or a pair of 7B3 I would definitely go for the pair of 7B3s.  The 7B3 has more capacitance per a channel, additional heatsink, and are lighter than a single 14B3 amp.

What differences did you hear between the 4BSST2 vs the 7B3's did you hear that you'd attribute to version differences (SST2 vs S3) vs power and capacitance (4 series vs 7 series)?

That is difficult for me to say because I changed speakers at the same time and I am quite sure changes to the transducer would be the most significant.

Oh yeah, that would be nearly impossible to isolate. Glad you're pleased with the whole package though. That's what counts!
