Tyson’s Notes  AudiKinesis Audio Room

General Room Notes – First room of the show on Saturday and I’m very happy to see AK back at RMAF.  They bring something that almost no one else does at these shows – INNOVATION.  They have separate speakers that fire the full signal toward the ceiling and are placed behind the main speakers, giving you an open baffle sound while retaining the punch and super sharp imaging of box speakers.

Sibelius – Good emotion and really nice deep soundstage.  Those ambient speakers really do a good job of expanding the room.

Mahler 5 – Very coherent and powerful.  Really great dynamics.  You can tell these are efficient speakers.

Tom Waits – Tons of emotion dripping off his voice on this one.  One small problem, this track reveals a bit of a room mode in the bass.  The acoustic bass is a bit too strong here.  On a more positive note, these guys sound BIG but not overblown.  That’s a really hard thing to pull off.

Natalie Merchant – Again, just a huge sound that’s not also relaxed and highly emotive.  And groovy.  Hell yeah!  These are MY kind of speakers.

Jason’s Notes
Sibelius it's nice to see Audiokenesis back at the show especially after a strong showing in previous years. The Sibelius track sweet and gorgeous intonation.
Mahler wow. DEEP sound field. Great imaging even from my none sweet spot position
Waits usual bass overhang as with all these rooms on this one. Really awesome growl to Waits voice. Focused soundstage. Goes well behind the wall.
Merchant no disembodiment like other systems with the deep voices. Great dynamics again. Only know is I feel like the soundstage isn't quite as expansive as with the other material for some reason. Hmmmm.

Tyson’s Notes  Technics Audio Room

General Room Notes – Concentric speakers, nice!  I love concentric speakers   All Technics electronics too.  Big, black and mean looking.

Music – listening to the jazz from their library, I’m noticing a pretty intense bass mode in the sweet spot.  Looking beyond that, things sound a bit flat and compressed, very surprising.  Yeah, just overall flat.  And they even have room treatments (kudos!) so I have to lay the blame on the system… Oh, moved to a different track now, Amber Rubarth ‘Strive’ and it still sounds a bit hard in the lower treble, but the rest sounds pretty good.  Treble in general seems to be problematic here.  I think they’ve made the classic mistake of trying to put a speaker designed for a large room into a small room here at the show.

Jason’s Notes
That amp.... Pure sexiness even if it's just another aluminum box.

Playing a song called Strive by Amber Ruthbar... Wow. This is phenomenal!!!!! The dynamics and natural soundstage. Without even knowing the material it is evident to me that this is the best I've heard at the show. Concentric mid tweet is the real deal. Increidibly focused I,aging and sound staging.
I am shell shocked and blown away that technics put together a system of this caliber. Breathtakingly beautiful. Big thumbs up.

Tyson and I are in the hall in front of the technics room having a full on argument about what we just heard. I don't think we can be friends anymore.

(Too bad they weren't displaying a new turntable......)

Tyson’s Notes  KEF and Wyred 4 Sound Audio Room

General Room Notes – These speakers are freaking beautiful.  They are superbly art deco.  Class D amp, hmmm, my expectations are dropping as I have a rather contentious history.  To be blunt, I f'ing hate them.  Lets put on some music and see how it goes!

Music – Listening to the stock music.  I like that these speakers go down to the mid bass with authority and don’t even attempt to do super deep bass.  Smart.  Clean, clear, dynamic.  Shocking that this is a class D amp.

Sibelius – Nice full, smooth sound.  To say I’m surprised would be an understatement.  I normally find class D amps cold and sterile.  What dark magic has been wrought here?

Mahler – Oh yeah, that horn just cuts through the sound.  Dynamics holy crap!  Bass is tight and super punchy.  Treble gets a bit hard when things get crazy.

Tom Waits – Huge sound.  I think this is the best, larger than life sound of any system so far.  And, unlike a lot of other rooms, no bass hump on the acoustic bass.

Natalie Merchant – The overall clarity and bass control/detail really shine here.  The bass singer has grit and detail in his growl that’s normally glossed over.  Excellent pace and rhythm.  Wow, I expected the treble to get hard when Natalie lets loose.  But no, stays super smooth and detailed.  This room really shocked me at how great it sounds.  One of the best rooms of the show.

Jason’s Notes

Sibelius wow i really like the texture of the violin in this setup. Thumbs up.

Mahler trumpet sounds triumphant!!! MONSTER dynamics. Fuck!!!! Earth shattering

Waits holy shit! Behind the curtain there is a giant beautiful performance. I want to peak behind it. Home run performance.

Merchant solid solid solid imaging. Everything is well anchored. No cartoonishness to male vocals here. Just strong confident grace and beauty. Forget analyzing I just want to enjoy it.

Fuck you all. I'm not giving up the sweet spot. This is hawt!!!!

Tyson’s Notes  Pure Audio Project and Grant Fidelity Audio Room

General Room Notes – Open baffle PLUS AMT tweeters?  Hell yeah!  Looks like bamboo baffle double thick plus a recess for the tweeter.  Aesthetically I find them very pleasing.  Wired 4 Sound digital amps in use in this room too.

Music – Listening to the stock music, Tin Pan Alley (oh god kill me now).  But damn if it doesn’t sound niiiiiiicccceeeee.  OB speakers are my favorite design (it’s what I run at home), and it’s so hard to get them really, really right.  Usually you get at least a little bit of misty/diffuse sound and have a lack of punch in the upper/mid bass.  However, I don’t hear any of that here.  Just a beautiful, huge soundstage with real dynamic punch.  Even sitting off axis they sound stellar.  I’m calling it, best OB room at the show (so far).  Man, this has been a really great run of rooms today so far.

OK, finally get the sweet spot and the soundstage is HUGE.  Man these speakers really lock in and ratchet up a LOT.  Love it.  I think this might actually be best sound in show for me, personally.

Jason’s Notes
Tinpan Alley the roughest place I've.... Eva... Beeeeeeeeeennnnn. Good overall balance but oddly I'm not getting any good imaging anywhere I sit. I'm dead center.... Nada. Very peculiar. Everything is great but for me I can't get over the lack of imaging despite the overall sound quality being good. Weird I don't know if it's just my ears or what the hell.

EDIT: revisiting this system listening to dead can dance. Ok... Wow what the hell was wrong with my ears the first time??? I've never had an instance where I couldn't find imaging and soundstage because now on this track it's very very good! Larger than life big. Very peculiar but I'm glad I came back!  In the top three for rooms I've heard thus far at the show. lol weird.

EDIT: forgot to mention the amps are Wyred for Sound amps in this setup. Thought it was on the sign but it wasn't. Thanks for the heads up guys.

General Room Notes – Dude, these are awesome looking- electrostatics done up like old console speakers, that is so cool.

Music – Listening to the stock music, can’t really make any judgments, everyone is talking talking talking.

General Room Notes – Thought these were more interested from the quick peek in than they actually turned out to be.  They sound good, but in not that different than a ton of other good speakers.  Not bad sounding at all, just not interesting/inspiring/awesome.  And this year Pez and I are all about the cool/awesome/different stuff.

Jason’s Notes
Full room. Good dynamics if a bit hifi sounding and proper. Maybe I just think that because we're listening to classical. They do no wrong honestly.

Glad you got to hear a room with the Exogal Comet DAC . . . I have one and it's terrific.
Checked out their web site.  No specs (even in the PDF)!  What are they?  What does it cost?  Just wondering if you know.  I realize you're not their rep.  Looks really nice, though.

Always look forward to this thread during RMAF!

Thanks for the coverage, guys.

Jason and Tyson, Kudos for all your efforts...really!

Looking at your photos of the Wyred/KEF room I'm wondering if you were in fact listening to class D. Looks like Wyred is resurrecting or resuscitating SST.

Tyson’s Notes Kimber Audio Room

General Room Notes – We were just walking by this room in the conference room area, on our way to the elevators to get back to the towers.  Heard some great sound and decided to peak in.  Holy shit it’s a real person playing a real piano.  Of course we gotta stay for this.  Ray Kimber is doing live recordings of 3 different classical pieces (Schubert solo piano music) and using a different mic position for each piece.  Now we are in the stereo room and listening to the recordings he JUST MADE.  How fucking cool is that!?!

On all Meitner and EMM Labs equipment with giant Martin Logan speakers we are all sitting around listening to each recording.  So, how close is it to live?  Pretty damn close.  Very impressive!

Jason’s Notes

Really amazing room!!! Most realistic piano I've heard yet!!, seriously though, Ray Kimber and Co know how to do a show. This is a live performance that is being recorded as we speak. Then we are going to the next room to hear this recording on whatever goodness Kimber has cooked up!

Exogal is a new company created by the "old" Wadia guys . . . the original founders of Wadia who are back in the business out of the Twin Cities.  The Comet is their first introduction - with great reviews.  The DAC with dedicated power supply retails at around $3,000.  The US distributer is Underwoodhifi.  But there are other retailers.  They are about to release a dedicated amplifier called the Ion (it will only work with the Comet).  Hope this helps.

Ok now in the listening room!!!! The first recording clearly is clipping but still good quality. I am sitting in the least ideal spot on the floor but no other place to be. Sitting in the sweet spot I made up on the floor. Pretty incredible realism though there clearly is a huge difference between recording and real life. I wish I could say it's SOOO REALISTIC but I just can't. It still sounds like a recording.

Tyson’s Notes Aurender Audio Room

General Room Notes – One of only 3 rooms that look interesting on the entire 8th floor.  Tiny speakers all the way up against the wall.  This should not work at all.  But there’s an actual credible soundstage going on.  Interesting.  Just moved off axis.  Nice big sound.  There’s no way that this an audiophile type system, but I don’t think it even tries to be.  It seems to me that is aims to be a Bose killer lifestyle speaker.  And in that respect, it works.  If you are loking for high fidelity, look elsewhere.  But if you are looking for speakers for your living area that you can turn on while you entertain and party, these are the ticket!

Jason’s Notes
Gonna keep it short and sweet. I have never liked the way speakers sound when pushed right up against the wall whether it's because room constraints or and intentional design decision. I'm fairly certain in this case these are designed to be up against the wall. I find the performance splashy and very off tonally. Not my cup of tea.

Tyson - What a bullshit idea.  Awards for DACs and stuff?  There's absolutely no way you can make any comparisons of anything except entire systems, and even with that, the majority of what you hear is the speakers and the room.  Idiocy.

I guess they are trying to be like the CES consumer awards. CES never hears this stuff either before their awards are handed out.

Tyson’s Notes Vaughan and Wavelength Audio Room

General Room Notes – I’m always hesitant to hit rooms with plasma tweeters because the tweeters are ALWAYS so far and away better than the rest of the system that they tend to stick out like sore thumbs.  Or maybe stick out like shiny gold in a sea of sludge.

Music – listening to the stock playlist from the room.  Really good integration and the mids are keeping up with the tweeters rather well.  The quasi-line array of 3 inch drivers match up quite nicely.  No CD player so looks like we are stuck with the canned music, so hard to make precise judgments.  But it does sound good, that’s easily discerned even on unfamiliar music.  These sound almost like OB speakers they are so spacious in their presentation.  Tracks switched form Allison Kraus to Shostakovich and the bass is kicking!  Nice power and control.  Hard to believe the tubes are generating that much oomph.  Of course Wavelength Audio tube gear is just stellar.

Jason’s Notes

Dynamic, amazing treble clarity and air. Superb sound staging and imaging without a doubt one of the best I've heard at the show. Just a great easy to listen to yet bold system. Pretty enamored with this setup! Top five easy.

General Room Notes – Always a pleasure to go to this room – tons of care taken in setup as evidenced by the room treatments.

Sibelius – Violin is a little hot on this piece.  Nice soundstage depth and detail.

Mahler – Good raspy metallic presentation of the horn.  Highs are still a bit hot.  Absolutely crushing dynamics.

Tom Waits – Nice big presentation, acoustic bass is a bit overblown, I think there’s a room mode causing a nasty peak in the mid bass.  Vocals have tons of grit and emotion, as is appropriate with this artist.

Natalie Merchant – Bass vocals are overblown due to room issues.  Odd, I’ve never heard the Odyssey room with anything but drum-tight bass before.  Putting that to one side, the speakers image and energize the room in an absolutely humongous way.

Jason’s Notes

Sibelius awesome!!! Sweet gorgeous amazingnes from nonsweerspot
Mahler are you kidding me with these dynamics???? There is a bass bloom issue for sure.
Waits pretty damn solid but a bit dry in balance but great depth to soundstage and as usual perfection in imaging.

Merchant a little dry on male vocals but really great on female vocals. A bit shouty surprisingly at times.

There is a bass problem for sure. It unfortunately is causing a lot of problems with the overall sound really unbalancing the sound.

Those speakers might have rear firing midrange drivers also. Jim Vaughn used them on the Cabernet II's. The effeciency should be around 100db/1 watt since he does not use crossovers onthe midrange drivers.

Tyson’s Notes TAD Audio Room

General Room Notes – Andrew Jone’s babies.  TAD room rocks it every year.  This year is the exception.  Listening to the canned music from the room and it’s pretty darn hot and in your face.  Still dynamic as all getout but rather unpleasant to listen to.  I’ve heard these exact speakers sound amazing with all TAD electronics.  So I’m blaming a too-small room and the BAT amps.

OK, changed tracks and it sounds much better now.  Whew, that “Like a Villian” recording was terrible.  Not sure what the new artist’s name is but it’s much, much, much more listenable.  I guess I was blaming the system when I should have been blaming the horrid recording.  OK, even re-setting expectations here, it’s still good but not great, standard hi-fi-ish sound we’ve all heard thousands of times before.

Jason’s Notes
And the winner for worst music when we first walk in award goes to....   THIS ROOM!!!!

Literally a woman screeching with some sort of distortion pedal hooked up to the microphone. Holy shit it's literally horrifying.

Now that we're done listening to someone being murdered we are hearing some well recorded vinyl. I can say that it is very excellent. Very pleasant. Great imaging and sound staging.

Tyson’s Notes Avant Garde Audio Room

General Room Notes – Oh man these speakers are ridiculously beautiful.  Object d’art to lust over.  Huge, but would work absolutely perfectly in the grand hall of my second home in the mountains.  If I had a second home.  Or lived in the mountains.

One thing these speakers are NOT – screechy and/or overblown in the treble.  Horns have come a long way since your grandfather’s day.  Oh wait, I forgot how old the readers are of this forum.  So, they’ve some a long way since YOU were born :P

Bass section is separately powered and can be tuned to the room.  That’s very very very smart.  I have no idea why more manufacturers don’t do this – the moment you have prodigious bass, you need a way to control it and tune it to your room, PERIOD.

Anyway, these are the complete package, stunningly beautiful looks, beautiful sound and super smart engineering.  I think they could benefit from a warmer sounding amp, but overall I say this:  They may be physical big but aurally they are svelte and nimble.

Jason’s Notes

Pretty serious looking setup in here. I'm always surprised at how tonally neutral avantegarde horns are. Short post for me sorry but overall pretty damn good.

Tyson’s Notes Skogrand, Modwright, Endeavor Audio Room

General Room Notes – Finally, another manufacturer that gets it – substantial amounts of room treatments.  You know that there’s been a lot of care put into a room when they have good treatments, well set up.

Sibelius – Very good emotion and mystery.  So many systems miss the mystery of this piece.  And the ineffable mystery is where art can touch us most.  And I want to be touched.  A lot. :O

Mahler – just explodes with dynamics.  Not quite as clear and detailed in the bass compared to the very best systems.

Tom Waits – A bit of a bass mode on the acoustic bass.  Man this track is brutal about exposing any little bit of bass issues in rooms.  Otherwise the vocal and emotion are first rate.

Natalie Merchant – This track really showcases the superior detail and texture this system has.  And groove/soul.  Funky.  Nasty funky in the best possible way.  Goes very loud with no treble hardness at all, very very rare.  Big thumbs up!

Jason’s Notes

This room is really gorgeous walking in. Odd thing to point out but it really is a nice color in here.
We are listening to some of the house music and it sounds phenomenal!!! Great attack love whatever we're listening to.

Sibelius Hahns solo (pun intended) is the best I've heard so romantic and breath taking.

Mahler nice dynamics. Really superb scary deep scary attack scary good.

Waits a touch of bass bloom but not awful. Great growl and body to his voice. Sweet sorrowful bliss. Detail like you wouldn't believe.

Merchant really beautiful sound staging. Male vocals have texture like you wouldn't believe. The dynamic shift is nice!!! I cranked it a bit and the setup handles flawlessly. Best tonality and overall sound thus far for me. Perhaps tied with the KEF room.

I think I met this same guy at the show a couple of years ago. I walked into a room and the odor literally made my eyes start watering, so I immediately left.

Felt sorry for the vendors in the room who had to put up with it.

Just checked the Vaughn website.  The speakers you listened to are 93 db efficient and a 11-16 ohm load (perfect for tube amp).  There are also 4 more 4 inch mids in the rear (bipolar array) and the woofers are self powered.  So, solid state super powered bass with super tube amps driving all eight small drivers and plasma.......it should sound great!  Can I have one please!.......make that two.

For a set of new plasma's, they are $7k. Earlier this summer he had two pairs of the older rebuilt plasmas for  3 or 4k. They have attenuators to match them to your personal speakers. Some people spends more than that on line conditioners or speaker cables that will not improve their systems nearly as much as these plasmas will. The speakers he is showing are $15k with plasmas, $9k with bullet ribbon tweeters.

Jim Vaughn use to own a very high-end audio salon for years in the Midwest, so he definitely knows what it takes to be competitive in the manufacturing business side of audio.

I may have missed it somewhere, but as per the AudioKinesis room, did Duke give any details about his new stand-mount speakers?

No Atma-Sphere this year...I'm curious to know more about the amplification used and the synergy of the electronics in general, if anyone would care to comment.

Maybe he was the valet that parked Seinfeld's BMW. Hint: Only fans of Seinfeld fan will get that one.

[General Room Notes – No listening notes for this room because whatever random customer/show goer who happened to be with us in the room at the time STANK WORSE THAN ANY OTHER HUMAN I’VE EVER SMELLLED.  Good God it was so bad you could not escape it no matter where you went in the room.  Shockingly this is not the first time we’ve encountered this at the show.  My message for people like that “I know that being around other human beings is ridiculously stressful for basement trolls like you, and being out in the sunlight probably burns your eyes, but FOR GODS SAKE PLEASE FUCKING WASH YOURSELF YOU STANK STANK STANK STANK YOU RANK PIECE OF CRAP.”

We’ll try to come back later and sorry about the rant.

It's not funny when that happens to all of you when that person has scents of humus.

Tom,

Thank you very much for the information.  I looked at the Vaughn website.  The plasma canons are shown but there is no info.

That's funny...

When I open the Vaughn website on my laptop, under "products" I see the Plasma II model, not the Canons.  But looks identical to the show pair.  I'm guessing same speakers, with a name change?  And it does have the complete build details, specs and prices.

But when I open the site on my android phone I see the same Plasma II, but no details/specs/prices.

OK, the website says 15k for these speakers while the S'phile show review says 20k.  And the review says the model is called Plasma II, just like the website.  Not Canons.  Why the confusion?    Annoying.

The way this system honed onto instruments and soloists was extraordinary. Alison Krauss's voice hovered in the air, like a Siren calling to me, as I enjoyed the familiar pairing of Wavelength Audio and Vaughn loudspeakers. A recording of solo violin sounded equally wonderful. Equally lovely was Lyle Lovett's "She's Already Made Up her Mind." There was something very haunting about this system's sound that drew me in.

Doing the honors were the combination of Vaughn Plasma II Limited Edition loudspeakers ($20,000/pair) with Fostex dipole midrange and powered subwoofers, AudioQuest cabling, either Wavelength's Crimson+Q1 FPGA DoP/PCM DAC module ($9000) or Cosecant+Quotient FPGA DoP/PCM DAC module ($4000), Wavelength's Europa preamplifier ($7500), and one of three possible Wavelength monoblock amplifier pairings: the limited-edition, all-silver Napoleon Ag Silver ($35,000/pair), Corona V2 VT52 Silver ($20,000/pair), or Cardinal Classic ($5000/pair). In answer to the question, why didn't you ask which of those was playing while you were in the room, the answer is that I didn't know to ask what was playing. The system component list was on a USB stick that I couldn't view in the room. Thus, I had no way of knowing what I needed to know. All that occupied my mind was the music.
