Synergy 450 speaker output fuse sizing?
« on: 3 Apr 2015, 02:29 pm »
Hi all,

I tried doing searches and not getting information as specific as I believe I need/want.  I saw mention of specific output fuse size based on wattage vs speaker impedance (a 5 amp fuse will allow maximum 200W into an 8 ohm speaker).

So if I have large floor standing (5 speaker/4 way) 4 ohm speakers with max rated 300 watt capability.  What fast blow fuse size will allow no more than 300W into a 4 ohm speaker?

Is it 7 amp fuse produces max 196 watts?  (current squared X impedance)

Thanks,
Andy

Since your speaker's impedance varies a whole lot over its frequency range I suggest you be cautious with your fuse selection.

In general we suggest no more than 6 amp quick blow output fuses for the big AVA power amplifiers.  Large fuses then this often will allow the amplifier to protect the fuses by blowing the speakers first!

Thank you Frank, I'll stick with the 6A fast blow replacement that was in it already.

The powerful low freq audio on last night's movie Interstellar was apparently a little much.
