Sennheiser HD-570 (Appetizer...)
« on: 29 Sep 2013, 11:13 am »

Hi all Audio Circle members.
For the past 10 years I have been enjoying the good sound of my  Sennheiser HD-570 paid 100 USD.
They still make me happy with sound quality and comfort.
The headphones shown on my Made by Guy 13 support.
I mainly use those headphones with my IPod.
AC 01

I don’t really like the look of them, but
that does deprive me from sleep.
AC 02

The only little problem (If problem there is.)
is a piece of grill that as disappears and that was protecting the diaphragm from dust.
AC 03

Very comfortable they are on my head.
No sweating even at 90F+
AC 04

I will post separately the acquisition
of my Sennheiser HD-650.
Consider this post as an introduction to the HD-650.

Sennheiser HD-650 (Main course...)

Hi (Again) all Audio Circle members.
After the appetizer, here’s the main course.
I wonder what’s in the bag?
Nice weaved polyester bag.

The corrugated old style box is what
I would call:
Super ugly !
Not representative of a pair of
hi-end headphones.

Inside the ugly box there is a luxury box.
The ugly box is to protect the hi-end box.
Now I see what is the idea behind Sennheiser
packaging.
Of course a small lock in front of the box would have
prevented the box from opening when transported.

WOW ! Nice presentation.

This is my second headphones holder.
This one is bigger than the previous one
because the HD-650 deserves something better.
This one is also Made by Guy 13
and/or Made in Vietnam.

The top male to female adaptor with the flexible
Cable is a bright idea.
The middle adaptor came with the HD-570
Cheap and not practical, can be easily broken.

Another touch of refinement is the
little notches, for the blinds.
To identify the left from the right side,
Since the cord connect both sides of the headphones.
I consider myself as a partially blind,
since I can’t see the L and R sign.
without put on my reading glasses each time.
With the little notches, just have to touch with my finger
and I know which is which.
With the HD-570 there is only one cable and once you know
it’s on the left side, then no more problems.

Because I have not purchased yet my
Bottlehead Crack headphone amplifier,
This is what I have used to evaluate my
HD-650.
(Better than nothing!)
This is my office system.

Now, the own evaluation of my new Sennheiser HD-650.
I paid 411 USD including 10% taxes.
That’s a good deal !
It comes with a two (02) years warranty on parts and labor.
A six (06) months exchange for a new unit in case of defect.
For me the warranty will only be six (06) months,
because in six months from now I should be back in Canada.
I will make this short and sweet.
They are very comfortable.
No sweating problem under the Vietnamese burning sun.
They fit well over my ears, which are getter bigger with age.
They are relatively light.
The sound you have to get use to it,
especially after spending 10 years with my HD-570.
The bass is deep and of good quality to my ears.
The mid are perfect.
At one time I swear I have heard on the CD the musician clearing
is throat before playing.
I played the CD several times to make sure
and I am now almost sure that I’ve heard it.
Lots of information is there.
The highs are sweet with details.
Overall they are really none fatiguing.
Once I have started to listen to the music,
it’s very difficult to stop
and put aside those headphones.
Of course there is better.
The HD-700 and HD-800 but with my 65 years old ears,
This is perfect for me.
I am now considering importing the Crack headphone amplifier.
I am sure that the Crack will be 1,000% better than my little
Sony receiver.
I am very happy with my purchase, especially at 411 USD
and I am sure that Sennheiser has made many other music lovers
as happy as I am.
Now, I just hope they will last until I die, which should be in about
30 years from now, unless of course I get run over by a
40 tons Vietnamese truck.

Guy13,
Congrats. Hope you like yours as much as I like mine.
I have found other cans that maybe do this or that a little better, but for overall balance of qualities, these are my favorite. Most 'fatigue-free' sound I have encountered. Well recorded piano in particular sounds glorious.
They aren't the easiest to drive and will really 'strut their stuff' only when driven properly.
Enjoy

Hi FULLRANGEMAN and all Audio Circle members.
Up to now, even if it still early, the headphones have fit and fill my expectation,
even if at first, I was not sure.
Now I am sure those are the ones...

Hi milford3 and all Audio Circle members.
Even if for now I drive my HD-650 with a cheap Sony receiver,
I am already enjoying them.
Can you image what it will be like with the Bottlehead Crack ?
Thanks for your comments.

Guy 13

It's a hobby with ups and downs,
right now I am at the top of the hill or the roller coaster.
Can I go higher ? I think so !

Hi dB Cooper and all Audio Circle members.
May I know/ask with what make/model of amplifier you drive your HD-650?
I am curious to know.

Congrats for such nice cans! when you have proper amplification you'll love them (even more). The bottlehead crack with speedball upgrade is a good start.

I use an O2 which contrary to the Headfonia review sounds great. If I were to go tube, I would probably choose the transformer coupled Torpedo (Almost the same price as the Crack in kit form.)

Hi Noseyears and all Audio Circle members.
For me, the Bottlehead Crack will be a good start and at the same time,
the end, because that will be my last system before I kick the bucket
in 30 years from now.

Hi dB Cooper and all Audio Circle members.
Lots of audiophiles talk about the O2,
however, it does not turn me on
and I am not interested in a battery operated amplifier.
That does not mean I don't think it's a good unit, on the contrary.
As for the Torpedo, I went on their website and...
Well it does look like a torpedo,
therefore definitely not my style,
even if it a good unit.
Also, I prefer OTL unit, not transformer output.
That's me, does not mean I am 100% wright.

Congrats on the purchase Guy 13!!!

Can't go wrong with the Bottle-Head Crack and the HD650 that's for sure. I used one with mine for quite sometime before I decided I wanted a change. Was no need for the change, I just wanted something different.

Hi heathen and all Audio Circle members.
Thanks for sharing.
Yes, sometimes you change something just for the sake of changing, no logical reason.
It happens to me so many times during my life of never satisfied and always want better audiophile.
However, I have to admit that now, I choose more carefully,
so I don't change and loose money at the same time within a few months.
As I previously mentioned, this is my last system before I go to heaven.
Well, not sure about heaven ???

Hi PMAT and all Audio Circle members.
WOW ! Knowing that, now I want to die right now to go to that special place !

Just kidding.
I enjoy so much my audio stuff, that I will stay as long as I can on this planet,
however, I know that I am not the one that decide the length of my stay
on the blue planet.

I like you, Guy 13, tend to keep my stuff for a very long time. My problem was/is I like to have 2 different sets of headphones. The HD650 has been my mainstay for about 5 years. I had the crack with it for well over a year. Then I decided I wanted the HiFiman HE-500. Problems arose when I didn't care for the new headphone on the crack. So after some searching I decided on the Lyr as it seemed to be liked by both. So I decided to sell the crack as I didn't need 2 amps!

Did you get any kind if timeframe when your amp will be done? I hope its not a long wait for you!!

Hi heathen and all Audio Circle members.
At only time I thought of buying a Schiit Valhalla or a Bellari HA-540 but after reading tons of reviews on the Internet, I decided to go with the Crack - HD-650 combo.
I don't lots and lots of audiophiles owners can go wrong.
I also thought of buying the HiFiman or equivalent, but I change my mind when I found out that they were not easy to drive and too analytical for a pair of 65 years old ears.
As far as the time frame goes, I have to decide if I will wait to get back to Canada sometime next year or buy it now and get it shipped to Vietnam and start enjoying the combo a.s.a.p.
The decision will be taken before the end of this month and after I have my latest balance of my bank account.
Maybe you could help me with this?
I did not see anywhere on the Bottlehead website the option of pre-wired/pre-assembled,
can you tell me where to find it?
Thanks.

Yeah Guy 13 I just looked at Bottlehead's Web site and can't find the "assembled" headphone amp anywhere as well.  It is mentioned however in the "about ordering" section.  Looks like you'll have to email or call them.  Interesting to find out why they choose to bury this option.  Or, I am missing something obvious?  Anyway, I will offer my recommendation for the Schiit line.  I have the Vahalla and sampled the Lyr (with Beyer DT-880 [250 Ohm] & Beyer T1).  Both are superb for the money, with Lyr providing a touch more head room.  I can't foresee any level of disappointment should you go this route.  IMO>

Hi FireGuy and all Audio Circle members.
For a very long time was look at both the Bottlehead Crack
and the Schiit Valhalla.

Why did I choose the Crack? (Even if I could still change my mind.

Both are tubes units.
Crack win !
Valhalla has 4 tubes vs 2 for the Crack.
Valhalla has PCB Vs point to point for the Crack.
Valhalla generate lots of heat. (According to some owners.)

Valhalla win !
Vahalla is smaller and better looking vs
Crack big and not very sexy.
Valhalla has 5 years warranty vs Crack one year.
Valhalla is ready to play vs Crack that need me to have a steady hand
and some reading (Read magnifying) glasses with the soldering iron.

Sometimes I am still wondering if I would not be better off with the Vahalla

If I had the money, U would buy the two units and them choose and use the lesser good sounding amp for my Ipod listening.

Decision, decision, decision ? ? ?
