LS 100 Balance input / output question ?
« on: 28 Oct 2011, 12:50 am »
Are there any sonic advantages (noise reduction/noise cancelling) by having a single ended wired preamp with balance outputs as in the LS 100?

Also would there be any advantage of using longer balance cables to monoblocks positioned by the speakers with this type of preamp ?

I don't think so since the XLR connections are not balanced.

I was thinking the same thing. It seems like having balanced connectors on a single ended design may be just for convenience.

Sorry for very tardy reply, but that is absolutely correct.  XLR inputs and outputs on LS 100 are ONLY for convenience.  It is not a balanced design.

I have found, however, that using XLR cables with the LS 100 does help to keep noise levels down, as XLR cables offer better shielding, especially for cables over 1m.

Thanks!
