I just listened to (or more accurately watched & listened) to Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes the Flood" from the Growing Up tour.

I get a general sense the song is about how life is short. But I dunno. Never the less, it always brings tears to my eyes.

A lot of my favorite songs are like this.I have no idea what Neil is singing about in 'Don't Dream it's Over".......life is short?

But I love that song.

Doesn't mean I don't like the straightforward stuff too. Take Lucinda Willams "Essence". Girl just wants to get it on, which is fine by me. 

A more straight forward Neil Finn song (as a Finn Bros project) was "Everyone is Here" That's easy....it's about family.

isn't lyrics part of the music (you like) even if you don't understand it?
ie there are lots of love songs with lyrics that put me off
to me some lyric mystique when you don't understand the meaning 100% moves me
if the music is good (even if i dont understand the lyrics) works for me well

Seems like some people focus on lyrics while others listen more to the music.  I often find myself really into a song, but unable recall a single word.

Here's one: Carrighfergus, sung by Cedric Smith. The words make some sense, but are still a bit of a jumble. But boy, does the song move me. Smith is incredible. I have looked for other songs by him but can't find any.

It's why I love bands like Dead Can Dance. Listen to Indus from the Spiritchaser album. Completely nonsensical but dark, brooding, and deeply emotional.
