Mercedes W123?
« on: 3 Aug 2017, 05:09 pm »
I just joined the group, but thought I'd see if there are any other Mercedes W123 owners/enthusiasts lurking around in here. I did a search and didn't come up with much...

I'm a long-time Mercedes-Benz enthusiast...owned several and loved them all. I daily-drive a W123...a 1983 240D. I also take care of it myself (mostly...) so if anyone likes technical discussions, I'm game...I'll answer any questions I can about them.

Here's my baby, not too long ago:

If not, that's cool, too...just thought I'd check in. Cheers!

Arguably the most durable car ever made, the W123.  Many have over a million miles on them.

And yours looks great!  Salut!

That's a beauty. Back in the 80s I wanted a 240D sooo bad. Unfortunately, I couldn't afford one as I was a lowly enlisted guy serving in the Air Force with 2 kids. One of my favorite cars.

It so happens my son is selling his. It's a 1984 300 turbo diesel with 396,xxx miles on the clock. It has good bones but needs someone who can refurbish the vacuum system. Any interest? Contact Dewey through a PM to me. I don't think he's going to be very fussy about pricing. I gave it to him for his HS graduation in 2009 and, until he recently bought a used Lexus 400h, it was the only car he has ever owned. Located in 81521 zip code.

I plan on a 1970's restored Benz at some point.

Yours looks great.

I do not need another one, no. This one is enough to keep me busy!

The vacuum system in the w123 from the later run - 82-85 - is tricky, but can be rewarding to repair. The real trick is getting the transmission to shift perfectly. The rest of it is really just maintenance items - cracked lines, leaky 3/2 valves, cracked rubber connectors...and the ubiquitous leaky door lock diaphragms.

Good luck with the sale - that's a great color combo, and not super easy to find.

Wow... 400,000 miles.  My late-model Mercedes has 21,000 miles and there are three issues already.
One irritating, one insoluble, and one very expensive.

I plan on a 1970's restored Benz at some point.

My 1971 3.5 was by leagues the most dependable classic car I have ever owned.  But I needed the money to buy a house in DC and had to sell it.  I sold it for about twice what I'd paid for it.  Now it's worth about ten times that :duh:
