A fun yet good sounding 8 watt tube amp
« on: 12 Dec 2009, 02:35 am »
Sometimes we just need to step away from the everyday work load and have some fun with the hobby.

This is an original S-5 Electronics 8 watt stereo amplifier that used the 11SM8 tube. This particular piece was purchased sometime around 2001-2002 and has been sitting on a shelf assembled in a basic chassis. Turned it on once for about 20 minutes shortly after it was built and then stuck it on the shelf where I had forgotten about it.

With some current changes in our Musica Bella chassis, I had a few extra chassis laying around that we no longer used in our product line so I found one that would house the little S-5.

About this amp:

This S-5 is 100% point-to-point wired. Better quality parts were used throughout with SoniCap Gen II couling capacitors, Dale RN and RS resistors, Panasonic power supply capacitors and star grounding provides a dead quiet presentation. Around back is 3 prong IEC, silver RCA's (2 sets of inputs) and the power switch.

Quite impressive sound from this $129 tube amplifier. Does need highly efficient speakers of 95dB or higher to shine but with some power supply modifications, it should do well with speakers of 90dB as long as you're not trying to rattle the foundation.

Looks pretty cool, is this a new offering from Response Audio or just something available for a limited time

I haven't thought about releasing these as a product but I guess I could build them into custom chassis for anyone interested.

I will let this one go as well. I just have to put a bottom plate on it.

Well, if you're selling it for $130, I'll take it!  Martin.

Can't let it go for $130 but would let it go for $200 + shipping.

The chassis is Quilted maple with various dyes applied for the look you see. Then clear coated.

Hello Everyone,
Didn't think there would be so many inquiries on this one. The amp above is gone.

I would build a few more but to build these with all point to point wiring is much more time consuming than one would think. Was more time consuming than I thought it would be.
