Hi  Where exactly is Woodbury?  Is that just a burb of the twin cities?

Woodbury is a fairly new suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota, set in the beautiful rolling hills of Washington County, kind of north of the Mississippi river and west of Wisconsin.  It is full of beautiful parks and wetlands and huge shipping centers.  It was rated as one of the best places to live in the country a little while back in one of the major news magazines (they must have really liked the shopping centers).

My home overlooks a wetland full of geese and ducks and deer and raccoons and water rats and mice and probably snakes.  I have a beautiful horizon to horizon view only marred by the rooftops of a development set so low into a nearby valley that I suspect all anyone will see is rooftops if we ever get a really heavy rain storm. Of course likely my property taxes are paying for their storm drains.  Oh well.  And of course there is the traffic light a half mile away that mars the pristine view, but you can't have everything without paying a lot more for it.

Anyway, what I am trying to wax poetic about is that overall Woodbury is pretty nice.

Yep, I'm at Holly Lake Ranch which is a private golf community about 40 miles north of Tyler and 130 miles east of downtown Dallas.  In other words, I'm in the middle of nowhere in an area known as the "Piney Woods" of East Texas.

I should be receiving the STs soon.  I have had them on order since the first of March and last I heard Jim was trying to get them out by this weekend (which is now past).  I'm pretty sure they will ship next week so anyone in Texas getting out this way just send me an email and I would be glad to let you listen - and maybe play a round of golf here with me after the audition.

Title: Re: Owners Audition list.
Post by: shortspark on 31 Mar 2008, 11:02 am
I was very skeptical at first as well.  I kept asking myself how I could spend that kind of money on something without even seeing them, let alone not hear them.  I read and read everything I could find and asked questions about these speakers at every forum that discussed them.  Do you know I could not find a single derogatory review or comment?  That in itself told me these speakers were a great value.  I could have spent more but why?

Also, I went back and forth with Jim via emails concerning colors and veneers and he seemed genuinely concerned with my satisfaction (when was the last time you spoke with lets say, Mr. Polk, about his speakers?).  I just bought new leather furniture and have a projector with 104" Carada screen in my new HT set up so the looks of the speakers, never a major concern before, took on new meaning and importance.  The craftsmanship everyone talked about and custom colors available on these speakers were a true bonus and deal maker for me.

However, a speaker is more than a piece of furniture.  My 60 year old years are not nearly what they use to be and I know I miss the subtleties that many young audies can still detect.  Jim explained that as we age the "intelligibility" factor of a speaker becomes all important.  In this regard, the accuracy of the mid-range (which Jim considers the cornerstone to a good speaker) becomes more and more important.  It is in this area that the STs excel.

I purchased the Cambridge Soundworks Ensamble system when Henry Kloss first left Advent (I had those too) and his was a direct sale method as well.  Those Ensambles have been wonderful for me for many years.  Based on this previous "sight unseen" buying experience, Jim's reputation, the cabinet quality and great reviews as to sound, not to mention the excellent price value, it was worth taking a chance.  BUT, I have not received them yet so until I do this is all a gamble but a I figure a good, calculated one.

If you do not feel comfortable doing this, however, my offer still stands for you to come out for an audition - when they get here that is!

I have not posted here because I live just shy of an hour from Jim and have assumed that a person would rather get with Jim since he is so close.

But I got to thinking, perhaps someone would like to hear a pair of HT3's just out of curiosity and may not want to take up Jim's time.

In any event, I live in Ypsilanti MI,  own a pair of HT3's which are finished in a hand rubbed-high gloss finish crotch mahogany.  Aside from the hand rubbed finish upgrade, I do have a couple more upgrades which consist of the Sonicaps and Blackhole 5.

I am using a Slimdevices Transporter, Dodd battery pre amp and a pair of Odyssey mono extreme SE's.

I would be more than happy to offer a listen to those interested and am just a pm away.

You might try sending a PM to koiman.  He's in Antioch.  He and his wife were kind enough to let me hear his HT3s last summer.  He was the only person I could find in the SF Bay Area with HT3s.

Hello all, newbie first time poster here. I was wondering if there was anyone in the greater Cleveland area with some Songtowers willing to share a demo. My usage would be 75% 2 channel music and 25% 5 or 7 channel home theater. I have a Pioneer Elite SC-05 avr which I plan on powering the system. Thanks for any replies and or suggestions. Bob.

Unfortunately, I don't recall ever shipping any SongTowers to Cleveland.  So you won't probalby get a positive reply here.  We do have SongTowers in Ohio, but I don't know how close - I would have to check.  Of course, if you want to take an afternoon driver, you are always welcome to visit us in the Detroit area.  (I used to live in Westlake and made that driver quite often - its not bad.)

  Jim,

Thanks so much for the reply. I don't think I've ever posted a question on any forum and gotten a response from the owner of the company.Your suggestion for a road trip sounds like a good one to me. I will be off work the entire week of April 20th., perhaps we could plan something during that time? I'll wait for your reply here as to how to proceed.

Hi,

I am getting ready to order ST-RT's and maybe a 12" rythmik sub, so I was hoping to get a chance to hear the ST-RT's (or at least ST's) before placing my order.  I know Evan has graciously offered to open his home in Staten Island in the past, and I may ask to take him up on the offer, but I was hoping to find someone in Manhattan that has the ST (RT)'s.  Anyone in Manhattan willing to share a demo some weekend coming up (preferably the weekend of the 13th)?

Thanks much in advance.

Anyone else think we should add a Mapbuilder or Frappr map to the first page where we can tag all these locations? Actually, it would be cool to use colored tags to indicate speaker models.

I wouldn't want to include any information other than a user name, speaker model, and city.

I was about to buy a pair of Maggie 1.6s when I came across all the buzz on the SongTowers (in my price bracket of under $2K.) I'm 71 and this will be my last set of speakers so buying without listening is out of the question. Presently still enjoying my AR9s that I bought back in 1981. I want to buy one more set of speakers and one more car before it's over - me, that is.

So....is there anyone within 100-150 miles of Little Rock, Arkansas, who would be good enough to demo their STs? I''d be happy to make a day of it and maybe bring some beer or wine for an hour of two of listening. Maybe someone in Memphis or down on the Texas border?

Anyway, I'd sure appreciate your help.

Interested in auditioning a set of HT3s in the Bay Area and based on this thread it looks like Koiman (Leon) is the nearest owner (in Antioch). I've sent him an email but I've not heard back from him thus far. Does anyone else have any other potential leads on HT3 owners in my general vicinity in the mean time?

Come visit the new room that I built exclusively to house my two HT3, measuring 15 ft x 9 ft x 25 ft. Speakers are placed 8.5 ft apart, 8ft from the front wall, 3 ft from the side wall. I am sitting 7.5 ft from either speaker.

28 acoustic panels are spaced strategically behind the curtains. The subwoofer used is REL B1, crossed at 40Hz.

There is an audio group in Dallas you should get to know.  See the North Texas circle here on AC.  Those Maggies will need a ton of power to perform to their best and could benefit from some wall treatment behind them.  Having said that, I've hear them sound very, very good.  The Song Towers I have yet to hear but there is certainly enthusiastic buzz about them here and elsewhere.  Cheers.

I'm in the Covington, Louisiana area (just north of New Orleans, 'cross dat big pond).   aa

I have a very vanilla setup consisting of a pair of lovely, sensibly black-dyed red oak-veneered (I think?) SongTowers with the standard dome tweets.  They're being fed currently by an HK 3385 stereo receiver with a Grant Fidelity B-283 tube buffer in between the preamp and amp stages.

The sound is heavenly.

If you'd like to set up a listening session, throw me a PM.

New member here - I'm about to do a major upgrade (near complete overhaul, actually) of my system. Been researching/listening as much as possible, and stumbled upon some reviews of Salk speakers over at the AVS forum. I'm interested in listening to the HT2TL's in the Dallas area. For what it's worth, right now I'm seriously considering some B&W 803s's (before they go out of stock). Thanks

Thanks - from what I've read, the only real difference is some bass extension on the TL's. I'm in far north Dallas - guess we should probably arrange things via PM's.

Well - went out to Chris's place, and played a few of my favorite tracks on his HT2's (his CD player didn't like my burned CD's, so had to use a possibly lower quality source). I am impressed - lovely job on the female vocals, which is a must have in a speaker for me. No fatigue whatsoever, and I kept finding myself turning the volume up just a little bit to see what else was lurking in recordings  :) I am sincerely grateful for the hospitality that Chris showed in opening up his home to let me see if these are the speakers for me. I'm pretty sure they are (I'll be snagging the HT2-TL's).

Jazzcat - thanks for the offer, but I think I'm pretty much sold already  :D

I had the pleasure to meet Dennis over the weekend. Man what a good impression I had. Dennis is a great guy and such an audiophile.

We listened to the HT4's and the song towers, and 1 HT3. Though all my demo cd's did not work, and I could not take my speakers for ab'ing, which I will do soon.

The HT4's were fairly impressive, and they were huge, and heavy, but above all, I loved the clarity the abilty of them to handle every bit of music we threw at them. Earlier  I was serioulsly considering the 803d's, now I am rethinking :)

More after a little more listening ..

I have heard the 803d's and 802d's and they were impressive when compared with these. I have also heard the Canton 890Dc's and i kinda like the cleanness of the Canton's, however I would say that I can give a better answer after i have spent an hour listening to these babies, using my own music.
I am planning to do that soon, am trying to find sometime off on the weekends.
I will keep you guys posted.

I've got a pair of 1290's that have been in storage for 10+ years.  And, I got some HT3s.  If you get by Houston, let me know.  System is calibrated for the Salks but could try the ADSs for fun.

It's been too long to remember, and I'm too busy at the moment to get them out of storage and set them up.  I know the HT3s have a lower base response.  And, while the 1290s were very accurate and netural, the quality of the drivers were much less than those used in the HT3s.  I loved the 1290s, mind you, but HT3s are in a completely different class.  Song Towers might be a better comparision, but I've never heard any Song Towers.

Contact Jim and see if there are any owners in your area.  Someone will probably let you audition Salks.

Thanks.  I contacted Jim and hopefully he can refer me to an owner nearby.

Looking again at the prices, realistically I think the HT3 is out of my range, although it would still be nice to hear them to see what qualities you get in such a speaker.  Looks like the HT2's are at the top of my range.  I wonder how much they are like the HT3s and what are the key differences?  If the SongTowers are along the lines of my 1290's, perhaps the HT2s would be a good upgrade?

Thanks again.  I greatly appreciate all the help and replies.

PS - I just noticed that the V3 is also in the price range I'm considering.  How does this speaker compare to the HT line?

I've had HT3's, V3's, Archos, Songtowers, and HT2TL's.  If your budget only allows $4k, then get the HT2TL's in basic form w/o worrying about upgrades in them.  If trying to do an HT set-up them go ST's and perhaps add ribbons if you can swing the cost if you're doing multiple speakers and have the same budget limit.

Thanks for the suggestions.

My speakers do pull double duty for 2 channel music and HT.  Right now I'm using a pair of ADS L1290/2s for L&R and NHTs for center/surrounds (don't remember the model numbers).  Even though all the speakers aren't and exact match, it works well for me.

I really didn't plan on replacing all my speakers, just the L&R speakers.  Hopefully my existing center and surrounds would still work well with the new speakers for HT use.

Personally, I think it's important to match the front 3 speakers for a number of reasons.  The rears are less important and can be of a different design/brand/etc. (unless you listen to a significant amount of 5 channel music).

Post by: Big Red Machine on 18 May 2010, 05:33 pm
Agreed.  Maybe Saturn could best spend his money by getting Songtowers all across the front and adding the surrounds later.  That's what I am going to do.  If ribbon tweeters are preferred for the 2 channel listening then that could be an option, but for HT I enjoy the dome very much and the ribbon would be overkill (in the dedicated HT).

If HT2TL's then the center becomes more expensive and may prevent a complete trio ensemble in short order.

Agreed.  As a matter of fact, for multichannel music I do not use the center and let the L&R speakers create a phantom center (my DVD-A/SACD player has center set to OFF).

The less than ideal sonic match of the center with the L&R speakers is much more apparent with music than HT.  With HT they sound just fine together.  I think part of the reason for this is the fact when listening to music I'm focused on just the music.  With HT, my attention is divided between the image on the screen and the sound (probably more on the image than the sound).

Considering I want something that will be a significant upgrade to my current L&R speakers (ADS L1290/2s), I'm not sure if the SongTowers would suffice.  I really need to find a way to audition these speakers! :(

Hampton, VA is about 2.5-3 hours away from Bethesda, Maryland, the home of Dennis Murphy, in whose basement you will find the only Salk showroom on the east coast, as well as the fabled Salk Sound Research & Development Laboratories.

If your ADS speakers can be moved without a forklift, bring one or both, and compare them side-by-side with some Salks.  It's well worth the trip.

If Dennis is busy, I'm another 20 miles away in Gaithersburg, MD.  I have a pair of SongTowers.

I have:

HT2-TL's
SongTowers
15" Rythmik sub, dual passive radiator design

AVA Insight Double 440, 240 and 240/3 amps, Insight DAC, Insight EC preamp with remote

PM if interested as I rarely look at this thread. I'm moving homes, so my setup will be in flux until perhaps mid/late July 2010, but there's no reason at least a 2-channel setup wouldn't be up if you wanted to hear either speaker or both.

Anyone with Songtowers in Humboldt County, CA open to a demo? I also travel to Redding and Sacramento, CA fairly frequently.

Can anyone summarize a comparison of the ST vs B&W CM9?

Thanks,

I'm not incredibly, technically proficient but it seems like what would make sense here would be to come up with a spreadsheet that shows where the various owners are located by city/state, the speakers that they own and are willing to make available for review and contact information (email?) to allow someone to contact them directly instead of just posting here.  I guess I'd be willing to try it and maybe we post it under a whole new thread to you don't have to read through 11 pages and counting?  I didn't people in Oregon had Jim's speakers until I accidentally ran across a post.  What say all of you?

Sounds like a good idea.

In my speaker search the most difficult part has been finding where to audition them!

Ok guys,

This weekend I am going to work on a Excel spreadsheet or Word document that will be shorter, sweeter and allow someone to find owners and speakers a little more quickly.  Then, I'm going to email it to Jim to post under a new thread and I would be happy to update it occasionally or Jim or Mary might be able to do that easier.  In any event, if you are willing to allow someone to hear your speakers and you haven't posted here, please let me know and I'll add you to the list.  Thanks all, Dave

Thanks all.

Thanks for you efforts.

In my speaker search over this past year the hardest part has been finding places to audition speakers I'm interested in.  Unforturnately, that means that some speakers that looked interesting will be dropped from consideration because I cannot audition them.

Ok I am thinking about changing speakers, I live in Maryland and would like to hear HT2-TL's I can go to MD, DE, PA, DC, VA.

I have Joseph Audio RM25XL speakers now but I want to here a quality speaker with a ribbon tweeter, so Songtowers would also be in the mix.
I feel the HT2's are probally a better comparison to my RM25xl because of the 7" woofers. I owned Gallo 3.1 speakers before these speakers and I like the ribbon tweeters.

So anyone available?

Thanks,
JT

Well, if we put Big Ben on the left, and an HT2 on the right, I can do stereo woofers.  Otherwise, not so much.

JT, if you don't have any luck finding an HT2-TL audition nearby, you can audition mine although I'm a bit farther away than Dennis (SE VA).  Dennis also has the ability to instantly A/B speakers (I do not).

No Song towers.

I think he was addressing that question to me.   What I have is one HT2 TL and One regular HT2.  But the crossovers are identical, and you should be able to get an accurate idea of the speaker even though the bass response on the regular is not quite as deep.

I am looking for some people in the Houston area that would be willing to let me compare amps.  If you have a HT2/TL or a Song Tower RT and would like to compare your amp against my Rotel 1562 Class D let me know.  I will be in the market for a new amp soon and this is probably the best way to get a feeling for Class D vs. Class AB vs. tubes.  I will bring my equipment over your house or you can come to mine.  Thanks.

We can post the results here to help people get an idea?

If you own Salk speakers and would like to demo them to perspective buyers, then please list the following information in your post:

* Where you live.

* The model(s) you own (please include upgrades, finish, etc...).

* Associated gear and setup.

* The best way to reach you.

Please do not post your address or phone number.

A sticky or a regularly updated list of all people willing to participate with their equipment and location would be a huge help.

Searching through the thread is pretty tedious.

Thanks.

I'm in kingwood tx, north of Houston by the airport, if your going to be in this neck of the woods, give me a little notice and we could set something up.  I have songtowers, songcenter, and songsub.

Hi Pat,
I am interested in songtowers/HT2/Supercharged. Can you please give me your contact information so that I can reach you? I am in Houston during the week so would really appreciate if you can allow me to hear the speakers. Appreciate your help.

Anyone in Tuscon AZ that would allow me to hear some their speakers? I am currently working on Davis-Monthan Air Force Base this week. 10-15 Mar 2013. Available after work Monday threw Friday after 5pm depending on how class goes.

Saturday the 16th of March I will be flying back home to Klamath Falls OR. I have a 7 hour layover if anyone in San Fransisco is available to demo there speakers. My flight leaves SFO at 9:25 pm. So I would need to be back at the airport by 7:00 pm for security. I think I arrive around 1 in the afternoon.

HT2-TL's Curly Walnut (just a pair of towers with no sub or center channel yet.
Receiver is an older Integra DTR 8.4.  No room treatments or anything fancy yet and it still sounds good.

I live in the NW suburbs of Chicago (Lake Zurich) and would like to audition a pair of Song tower Supercharged, perhaps with Van Alstine gear. I know there is a pair of HT-2's near me but the asking price is an issue. I have an Ultravalve and T8(Coming soon).

At Axpona recently, I was able to hear Salk Speakers, but the confined room with all the speaker pairs seem to constrain the 3 dimensionally of the speakers.

If you can't find an SCST owner, you might see if you can audition the HT2-TL (if it has the RAAL tweeter) anyway as it should sound very close to the SCST since they share mid/woofers from the same line.

Howdy, neighbor.

Although I received a very generous offer to listen to SS12s (near Seattle), I'm thinking my best bet is to hope that Salk Sound attends a relatively close audio fest--perhaps in the Bay Area or Seattle.  The SS12s must sound incredible, but I'd prefer to listen to speakers that are closer to what I'm likely to buy.

After repeated readings of the forums, reviews, and the Salk Sound website, I suspect the Silk monitors are what I'm more interested in, but who knows for sure? I must practice patience. Time will provide an answer.

I went and it was fantastic!

Got to hear the Salk sound, sadly there was nothing with the Salk + Ral while was there. (The SS8's were not hooked up).
However the Songtower's with the standard tweeter were great sounding so I can only imagine the SS8s or veracity.

Gord_Toronto, are you still around?  I registered to be able to respond to your post.  I tried clicking your name to see if you were still active but I don't have that privilege yet (on account of being new).  I'm in Pickering and if you're still around you may be close enough for me to drive out to (if you're up for it).  I could also offer to bring up some of my equipment if you were curious or wanted to do an  A/B comparison to make it more worth your while.

I'm looking to buy a pair of STs with RAAL tweeter and a matching center channel, but I'm weary having to spend that much on word of mouth alone.  If there's anyone else near or in the GTA (Toronto) area, I'd love to hear from you too.

With the massive influx of new residents to the Boise, ID area I hope at least someone will bring a pair of Salk’s that they’ll offer to audition.  I’m in Eagle and I’d love to hear a pair.

I'm in the NYC area and would like to hear a pair of Song 3 Beat or Song 3A.

I can bring a Ayre QB-9 DSD if you want to hear it.

Would be very much appreciated.

I can demo a new pair of Songtower II speakers that I am now using every day in my studio here in Woodbury, Minnesota.

Call me at 651-330-9871 if you would like to audition them.  You are welcome to bring your own CDs or records to play here.

Hi,

Are there any owners of any versions of Salk towers near San Diego who would be willing to let me audition?  (I'm fully vaccinated.)  Thanks.
