Pre-Gain
« on: 9 Jun 2013, 03:30 pm »
Hi guys,

I can buy a nice tube pre to go with my 451. I'm just not sure whether the combination is right, since the tube pre has 23 db of gain. As a source I use a phono pre that has an output of 0.8V with my cart. I would't want to overload the m451.

Any thoughts on this one?

Jos

ps. speakers are 95 dB.

By the way, anybody any idea how much gain the M451 has?

the preamp stage of the sensation is passive with no amplification.
the preamp outs are 1:1 using op amps and are seperated from the tripath input section.

I cant see you overloading the sensation

Hi Jason,

Thanks. But still, why do they make pre-amps with that much gain? I suppose I would hardly be able to use the volume control with 24 dB, or am I wrong?

I've used my Classe CP-35 as a preamp with my sensation and Two.2 with no issues so I figured I'd check into its gain.
it looks like the phono pre in it makes 42db and the line level gain is 18db
I think you'll be fine at 23db, I cant get my volume to 50% on the preamp using my Classy twenty five, VSP labs trans mos or Sensation so I dont think you have anything to worry about.

I dont know why they make such high gain preamps, my passive pre does just fine
