Out of the Lab from February 14 thru February 21
« on: 9 Feb 2016, 05:13 pm »
Triode Wire Labs will be closed from Sunday, February 14 through Sunday, February 21. I'll answer all inquiries upon my return on Monday, February 22.

I'll be accompanying (as chaperone) my son (Senior in HS) on a school trip to Nicaragua. Not sure of the "communications" availability down there. We plan on helping some of the local area schools...

If any future orders are placed within a day or two, I should be able to ship prior to my departure...

Cheers,
Pete

Dude! Nicaragua!!! Be careful down there. How did your son get hooked up into this journey?
It sounds really cool and very dangerous at the same time. Explain more about what you plan
to accomplish. (actually you and your son are goin on that blues cruise w/ Dave ain't ya).

Blues Cruise, I wish I was going with Dave Elledge!

My son's HS selects a few senior scholars (this year 19 students; his graduating class is 700+) to participate in a fun, somewhat humanitarian but definitely educational trip to Latin America. We will not be in the capital of Managua but in two coastal towns, Granada & San Juan del Sur. We plan on visiting the Mombacho Volcano, Ometepe Island tour, some surfing classes, snorkeling, Zip Line at Zapatera National Park and some Community Service at a local school. We also plan on visiting the Sandinista Museum as well...

My daughter participated in the same tour two years ago & I regretted not being a part of it. So... here we go...

Cheers,
Pete

Have a good time. Sounds awesome but just make sure the twist in the cable is right on the zip line
and make sure the tour doesn't turn into a Joe and the volcano thing.
Pics, Pics and more Pics (ain't seen one of them there scholars before).

ps: you are really blessed to have two such kids under one roof (must take after their mother)

Thanks, Don! That's just the middle two kids! The oldest graduated from college in 3 years (1 year early) Magna Cum Laude and the youngest (sophomore in HS) is a straight "A" student taking AP classes right now... I really am blessed & proud (that they take after their mother!)...

Cheers,
Pete

Some pics from the trip...

A volcanic crater lake (freshwater & very deep)!

Tortuga! A baby turtle that hatched in January.

Some of the kids relaxing at a desolate beach.

All work & no play makes Pete a dull boy!

One of the many beautiful churches... Faith was very strong in Nicarargua with daily masses. This country gave new meaning to the words "Dirt Poor"... very poor but rich in faith!

Monkey business! Howler monks jumping on the boat looking for snacks!

The Cathedral in Granada... See Volcano Mombacho in the background!

Couldn't help but find this in the balcony of the cathedral... The speakers were removed but the cabinets & old tube amp remained (looked like an old Hammond tone cabinet amp)...

Truly an adventure!

Pete

Incredible pics! What did your son think of the way of life down there.
Bet it was a totally different perspective down there. How were you
treated by the locals? And finally, did the system sound different after bein away
for a week? If not you can just send it down to me. I'll appreciate it for both of us.

Don
ps: Did the wife and daughter enjoy a week off from braiding?

Forgot to mention, we need a thread called leave it to Pete.
Leave it to Pete to find probably the only tube in Nicaragua!

It was a very humbling experience for both my son Matt & myself. The poverty was overwhelming at times, but the people were very happy. In the towns, the people in the market were eager to earn your dollar or Cordoba ($1USD = 28 Cordobas)... In a fancy restaurant, a good bottled beer was 30 Cordobas... Yes, the US dollar went very far...

Yes, my wife did not miss the braiding but hopefully missed me  :duh:

A couple more pics...

Sunset at San Juan del Sur (see the sailboat in the sun?)

Another view of the cathedral.

Bananas anyone?

Beware of the Puma (in the cloud forest, near the volcanic peak)!

Fresh water lake - notice the volcanic "dark" sand

Another view of Volcano Concepcion, with the constant cloud cover (cloud forest) over its peak.

Cheers,
Pete

Awesome Pete!
Thanks
I bet that tube was AOS (awfully old stock).
$1.07 for a beer, not bad. Did you try the local stuff?
