song 3 or something else?
« on: 20 Nov 2016, 03:47 am »
Hello,
I was looking for a new tower for my place in the near future preferably <$3k.
I listen to all kinds of music, orchestral, pop, rock, rap.

I think Song 3 would be a good for me but saw that Philharmonic The Slims tower looked very similar in size and design. Any subtle differences I should know about?
Should I look into some other models from Salk?
I like neutral FR.

Thanks!

The designs are pretty similar, but there are two differences.   First, the Slims has an open-back midrange, which confers some advantages on certain kinds of recordings (with lots of natural hall ambiance), and not much on others.  Second, the Song 3 uses a new and more expensive woofer that is larger and more sensitive than the Seas unit on the Slims.  Bass extension is about the same, but maximum output will be higher on the Song 3's, and overall sensitivity is about 2.5 dB higher.  Thus, the Slims will require almost twice as much amplifier power for a given dB output.  Also, the level of finish on the standard Slims and Song 3's is not the same.  The standard Slims finish is a simpler process and not as smooth as the furniture-grade finish on the Song 3's.  A comparable finish on the Slims adds $300 to the price.
