Hi,

I am Rob and just getting back into a higher level of audio. I am an electrical engineer by trade, and have actually done a bit of A2D and D2A design in my day.

My system, while humble and old, is being upgraded.

I currently have DCM TF1000s, 2 x NAD216THX amps bridged, 1 x NAD218THX (don't know what I am doing with it), an NAD preamp, and a lot of music on a hard drive that I access through a laptop. No idea about DACs and music servers, so this is an area where I will be doing a lot of homework.

Also searching for a good preamp and negotiating on speakers (Martin Logans are on my radar)

Yes, you need a DAC.  The technology is changing/improving quickly, so it's expensive to heavily invest.
