Anyone ever use bitcoin?
« on: 8 Jul 2016, 11:33 am »
I was wondering about trying bitcoin out.  But does the value of the bitcoin vary (so that if you buy $100 of bitcoin one day, it's worth $120 or $80 another)?  And what exactly does one buy with bitcoin?

Sound like an audio format war.  What value is there in an alternate currency?

That's the question I've always asked.  I could see if you were talking about shady transactions where you were avoiding legal restrictions, but for most of us, how is this better than my trusty Visa?

It's not, and I don't think Bitcoin will provide buyer protection, doubling of the manufacturer's warranty or give you a cashback percentage on the transaction.

Some people just don't trust the big banks and governments - especially if there is a big crash since the world's economy is all, more or less connected.

They may hate/fear banks, but to me alternatives like bitcoin seem to be far more risky.   I used to hear a lot about out but in the past year I've heard virtually nuttin',  as if it had faded away.

Mining has become impossible for the average user, that's the issue. It's more traded now than anything.

New monetary systems will have their ups and downs. Not all people/countries took American money when it was first issued and then re-issued and re-issued.....

It's how new bitcoins are made. Not all virtual currencies work that way. You have to read up on it...

The people making the miners probably made out the best

Bitcoin uses the Block Chain protocol, the concept is so complicated I leave the explanation to people smarter than me.

Wired is a good source to learn about Bitcoin, block chain and mining:

The well written and entertaining articles (parts 1 & 2) about the Silk Road, the dark web and bitcoin is a good read:
