Album's with that 50/60's sound?
« on: 21 Jan 2017, 03:26 am »
Hi everyone, I was hoping for some good recommendations for good albums that have a 50/60's sound (but that aren't bad or overly compressed).

Here's a prime example of one I've been listening to lately, among a few, where I just love the sound.

I have the 1960's reissue in stereo but it sounds great, and while I'm thinking I'll get the mono some time, and maybe the original stereo, but the CS 8158 sounds fantastic. I'd love to find more country stuff this good, without awful lyrics. But I'm generally interested in other stuff too. I have an oddball Coast Guard album that's very good too.

Good choice Folsom . I also like  Martys' classic release .
Can I suggest the Frankie Laine red and black Columbia cat eye mono lp's of this era ?
His version of "Ghost Riders In The Sky" is the best IMHO
Plus this album with the Buck Clayton All-Stars is in the same category recorded in NYC between Frankie's live shows at Billy Berg's night club, one of my personal faves plus it just sounds great

I'll check it out, the youtube version sounds good. Nothing wrong with mono or early version of anything. But it is a shame Columbia is a mix for quality. At least their non-classical seems to be better.

I did pick up the Sony CD version of the Frankie Laine Jazz Spectacular and it's good.... just not as rich sounding to my ears as the original mono Columbia lp though.
Midrange sound playback is important to me so I use a Seas full ranger with a tube amp and tube phono preamp, so maybe these albums work well with the room and gear for me ?
