Could be portable or not, but needs to be simple to use  - drag and drop from a computer would be nice.  Want it to download music that is not available on CD and play though my home stereo.

You mention "player" (source/front end) but you describe a DAC (backend).  Please give us more detail.  How will your computer drag and drop, etc?  If truly a player, what is your back end DAC or receiver?

I need one with a DAC, I would use it as another source in my system hooked up to the preamp.  I have a computer that stores my files and I could either bring the player to the computer to load or if it had removeable storage bring the storage media to the computer for loading.  It's obvious I'm not too smart about the technology so if I'm assuming too much or making mistakes please point them out.

Load Jriver onto your computer and use it as a source.  Then something like an iFi iDSD DAC will go between your computer and your preamp.  Done.

Yes, weird...I responded JRIver (and feel free to use my two 20 minute intro videos)_ yesterday but the post is somehow gone.  I must have done everything but hit "submit".  :)

Here is my JRIver tutorial thread.

I use the IFI audio Micro iDSD. It plays high res DSD/PCM.
Has pre-amp output
Can be hooked up to iPhone and plays high res with the proper app.
and it charges the smart phone via a side USB port.

I control mine with both my iPhone 4s and my Samsung Galaxy Android tablet.

Both work fine, but I prefer the tablet due to larger screen.  I also moved all of my audio magazine subscriptions to digital and read them on my tablet.

You can get a used android tablet for <$50 on ebay.

Hope this helps.
