Powerpac 300 SST

Questions for James Tanner.

I have just sold a 4B SST to a recording studio in London and am replacing it with 2 x 7B SSTs.  I still own another 4B SST and a 6B SST and was thinking of replacing them with 4 x Powerpac 300 SSTs and another 7B SST.  This is to get the amps closer to the speakers, some of  which are over 10 metres away.

How do the powerpacs compare to a 4B SST?

My amps normally sit on an Optimum International 2000 rack, will bolting the powerpacs to the wall have any negative effect?

Hi gassa,

Rule number one for me is "get the amp as close as possible to the speaker" That being said the 4B or 6B has more heatsink than the PP300 SST and therefore would be more at ease with low impedance difficult loads than the PowerPac. Al other aspects of the amp are the same.

James,

Do you think the reduced heatsink size of the PP300 SST vs the 4B-SST would make any difference with IB1 speakers ?

Is the PP300 SST a direct bolt-on to IB1's ?

Thanks.

Hi Jethro,

The IB1 is about 6 ohms over most of it's range so the PP300 would be fine. The IB1's would have to ordered with the mounts predrilled as they do not come standard that way.

James,

I think mine are pre-drilled. There are four threaded inserts with hex heads which straddle the speaker binding posts.  Do all of the powerpak models share the same mounting dimensions ?

I looked for a PP300 SST manual on your website but couldn't find one. I wanted to check dimensions.

Finally, if one wanted to upgrade from the PP300SST to the 14B-SST or 7B-SST, in the future, and wanted to re-use the PP300-SST to drive surround
speakers but not mount the PP300's on the surrounds or wall, can the PP300's be run flat on a equipment shelf or could this cause overheating problems ?  (Sorry about the run-on sentence).

Thanks.

HI,

Yes if the mounting female studs are there then you would not have to drill new holes for the PPacks.
The heatsink is more efficent if the PP stands uprught so it will run a little warmer lying down but it is not an issue.
