My guess is that if it were a newer car, maybe a little nicer, you would have done the usual and get insurance companies involved, get it properly repaired. But it isn't a nicer car, you tried to do a nice thing and somebody screwed you.
Don't beat yourself up about it. Life is too short. You car looks like hell, who really cares.
Not long ago a young kid rear ended me as we were starting from a red light. The car in front stopped short and he hit me at a few miles per hour. No obvious damage but he hit me hard enough that there could have been unseen damage. I could have reported it, maybe should have reported it but I didn't. Now when it rains extremely hard (which it does around here once in a while) I find the back area of my car wet (2012 wagon).
Whatever, it is what it is, I did what I did and I moved on.
