Technical Help Needed
« on: 23 Jul 2016, 08:31 pm »
It turns over fine but no start.
Any ideas?
I hope it's something simple as I have to be at work in a half hour.

Good luck getting to work in half an hour. It kind of looks like a compression problem from here, have you tried a leak down test. Maybe you have some left over parts that you need stuff in there to make it work.
Me, I'm better with Legos than motorcycles.

Poured over the whole bike and followed by a lit match?  ;)

I was going to say that hopefully your job location is all downhill from where you live, but it looks like you might also have a minor problem in the rear wheel vicinity.  A half hour is simply unrealistic, you could easily require twice that time to get it back on the road!

Hmmm, this may be more involved than at first meets the eye.
I'll have to consult the Owner's Manual and see what it says.  I think I have to pull the clutch lever in or something like that.

Couple ounces of C4 should get it moving. Good luck with the rebuild

Remember that when replacing the piston that you can select the part like some do when replacing speaker drivers.  Don't get bogged down with the technical minutiae of specifications, if it more or less fits in the cutout, you'll be fine.

Same goes with the piston, if it fits inside the cylinder and the cylinder can be bolted down all the way with no gaps, you're gold.

I'm reminded of an old Beverly Hillbillies episode where Jethro's truck breaks down on the road, and after working feverishly under the hood and making all kinds of mechanical tool noises finally pulls his head out and proclaims "I think it's this here carburetor!", holding a crankshaft with connecting rods and pistons.

Progress!
I would have been done by now but my buddy at the parts counter screwed up my order so next week it is.

I used the Magic Hammer on it.
It works on just about anything.  Cartridge alignment, motorcycles, furnaces, coworkers, you name it!
Not so good for tube testing, though.  They all seem to test bad, even new ones.

Nice work!

Likely way more complicated than the RZ350 rebuild I did in the late 90's!

It does have a reed valve in it so you'd feel right at home inside the motor!
That's why the cams were out, to replace the reed valve even though it didn't need it.  I figured with 94,000 miles on it I might as well put a new one in while I had the opportunity.

It's been over a decade since I've done this to one of these bikes (rotated the motor down, took it apart and put the motor back into the frame) and I forgot a lot of the little tricks so I made the job a lot harder on myself than it needed to be.
Shoulda done that first, shoulda done that before the motor went up, now how the hell am I going to get in there to do that, that kind of thing.

Oh well, it's done and now I've got to fix two Triumphs which decided to go on strike.
I don't think so!

Pay day is here and the bike has fresh oil, a new oil filter and fresh gas.
It fired right up and the break-in has begun once again.
Always nice when things work out like they're supposed to!
