That Tall Stacks lineup is simply amazing, especially for $20.  Milwaukee has something like that (Summerfest) that was $10 per night when I lived there in the eighties.

Back on topic, I'm too lazy to go back through the thread but was Gram Parsons mentioned?  The Sweetheart of the Rodeo era of the Byrds?  Poco?

They aren't slick and you won't hear them on "country" radio, but don't forget Fred Eaglesmith (tremendous live) or Steve Earle (likewise).

George/et al,

What from Blue Rodeo is a good place to start from their stuff?  Ditto Jayhawks?

As far as "Blue Rodeo".....I'd say "Casino" It has what might be considered their 'hit'....at least as far as public radio airplay goes, called 'Til I am Myself Again'. Great song, massive hook.....should have been big......  Go see them live if you get a chance. They are excellent musicians, they hire sound guys w/ taste and skill, and they are very charming people who obviously love what they do.

Blue Rodeo - Five Days in July and Tremelo are the two I like best.  Casino is good, but would be ranked third or fourth by me.

The Jayhwaks - Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow the Green Grass are the two I would start with.

For Blue Rodeo, my vote goes to Tremolo.
I have almost all their stuff, and it is the
most textured, atmospheric, layered, languid and spontaneous.
Recording is full and warm...lush at times.

I love it.
But it's a matter of taste.
Others may consider it "snoozy",  and I can see them preferring the
more direct and accessible stuff.

Ex-Monkee Mike Nesmith was one of the first practitioners of country rock ... and one of the best .

Read through the replies and did not see Firefall mentionned.  I really like their 1980 Undertow l.p., as it has some great songs not included on their Greatest Hits album.  Do not think that Undertow was ever released on CD, so was especially elated when I found a second, sealed Undertow l.p.  Just got back into vinyl after a long absense, upgraded my ancient VPI HW-19 to MK III status, new tonearm, etc., and Undertow sounds as good today as I recall it sounding 25 years ago.

A lot of people do it well but I'd have to say Gram Parsons.
