I think many people won't like Praise &  Blame on the first listen. I wasn't sure about it myself until playing it through for the third or fourth time.

Something else to consider is Robert Plant's new Band of Joy.

I admit this is not a CD, nor a Blu-Ray disc, but CD quality/high-resolution material. It's from a website called Masters From Their Day, and I believe it's either sponsored or owned by Benchmark (they make DACs and ADCs) Media Systems. They are free downloads in 24bit/88khz and 16bit/44.1khz.

I'm very fond of the first track by Annie and the Beekeepers as it sounds *wonderful* on my HT-2 TLs with my Ayre QB-9 USB DAC in 24/88.

Link:http://www.mastersfromtheirday.com/#audiodownload2

'Tis free, so enjoy!

P.S My HT-2 TL have brought me to a whole other level of emotional involvement with my Ayre QB-9 playing hi-res material.

Lately life has been a bitof a real pain, with my right ear recovering from a mechanical blockage, still not 100% and not being able to really listen to music the way I like to. Work, family, car problems and all the rest of the things we mortals go thru in life.

So it was a very, very special night when I went upstairs and turned on all the stuff and played several cuts from a bunch of cds...all sounded kind of strange with the imbalance in the ears etc....not good.

I have been playing with all kinds of ways to deliver sound to my SongTowers, experimenting with PC's Flacs, Squeezebox Touch, Asset UnpN DLNA and others.

So I went back to just putting a CD in the Oppo and only having it and the Ultravalve in the music reproduction loop, plus the AVA preamp.

The cd was Erin Moran's "A Girl Called Eddy". Insert disk, hit play and crank it up.

WOW, I was floored even with my crappy not 100% right ear problem. I instantly forgot about all of lifes woes, and was swept away to that magical place we go when you hear really fine material for the first time.

Oneinthepipe recommended this selection back on page 38. I got a used copy from the A and its sat there for many weeks until tonight.

Taken from a review on A: Most of the songs are slow-paced, sensitive and downbeat, with a very 60's feel, which I found uplifting and very warm - an extremely pleasureable experience. Her voice is very easy on the ear and one which makes you want to listen closely, but when it needs to be extended/stretched, it sounds stronger, purer and even better. There are also some really nice, understated string arrangements and some lovely tight playing by her backing band.

This has got to be one of the best recordings I have heard where the female voice is so good its like she is there in the room...just wonderful. Maybe its the reverb etc...but the album grows on  you. Its melodic and hauntingly beautiful...slow, moody and words that speak to many of us in special ways.

I hope some of you get this selection and enjoy it as much as I have!! Just when things are crap, this music made me smile once again!

I can wait to hear this when my ear finally clears up in few weeks!

This thread is filled with wonderful suggestions and I thank each and every one of you for them. I took the time to search amazon and found many of them to be shipped "fulfilled by amazon". So, I ordered a few of them to reach the "free shipping if you spend over 25". Here is what is on the way:
daniel lanois - shine
bob james - dancing on the water
mia doi todd - morning music
lyle lovett - joshua judges ruth
cassandra wilson - new moon daughter
virginia rodriguez - sol negro
keb mo - just like you
john lee hooker - chill out

It was under $28 for all of it shipped. Looking forward to listening to all of it.

OK I have a dumb question...I too buy a lot from amazon...I buy used as I assume you are to get 8 cd's for $28...am I able to combine these for free shipping if I spend more than $25? I saw someone else mention this and I have tried and can't figure it out.

And yes...most of my purchases come from rec's on this thread!!

Not dumb at all. What you have to do is find cds that are shipped "fulfilled by amazon". These cd's can be used or new. They are vendors that have a relationship setup with amazon so that the orders can be combined with amazon products to take advantage of the "free shipping on orders over $25". It takes me a while to fish out the cd's that take advantage of this, but it is well worth it to me.

Hello!

I have three new cd's from Keiko Matsui.

The first is Cherry Blossom. Its a 24 bit HDCD disc.

Track 8 "Footsteps" is really good. It has real 'bite'.

Keiko Matsui's "stuff" can be very delicate, lots of deep and underlying things going on .... to the more mundane pop jazzy types of the likes of good ole Kenny G!!  :D

If your in the mood, this is good stuff and laid back.

Hearing this material on really good speakers makes it really an exploratory adventure here...well worth the listen..play it loud and smile!

Let you know about the other discs later!

All the best
Alex

Thanks for introducing me to Keiko Matsui. Check out When I Close My Eyes from Moyo.

If only I had been aware of her earlier this year I could have seen her live, as she came through Pittsburgh. Hopefully, she'll get back here sooner than it's taking the Pirates to get a .500 record.

jzeport..

I went back and re-listened to "Footsteps" from Keiko Matsui's Cherry Blossom HDCD.

The bass slams in this track are outstanding.

I think this is a real awesome demo cut for sure, Jim Salk could use this for demos at shows and make lots of people smile!
 :D

I also went back and replayed Al Koopers "Re-Kooperation", Track 8, "Honky Tonk" play this loud and SMILE...Awesome, Awesome cd.

All the best
