Zikha still a concern in Florida?
« on: 20 Feb 2017, 04:39 pm »
What are people in FL doing about Zikha? Is it still a concern? If so, what do you do to protect yourself? Do you have to wear long sleeve shirts and long pants and use deet/Permethrin insect repellant whenever you leave the house? How concerned are you about it? How paranoid should I be about visiting?

Thanks and cheers,
Lester

Here is some info - http://www.floridahealth.gov/diseases-and-conditions/zika-virus/ and here -  https://www.cdc.gov/zika/intheus/florida-update.html

I don't do anything special.  I just go out.

While I live in central FL, I visited southern FL last year for a week and also didn't do anything special.  I just did what I wanted to and dressed how I would normally do so.  Not sure where you will be going.  Florida is a huge state area wise.

I live in the same part of Florida as Phil. All cases of the Zikka virus that have popped up in our state have been travel related, not transmitted by local insect hosts. When the virus has been found in local populations of mosquitos, the state has moved quickly to contain the spread. Here's a link the state's health department page on the current status of the virus. http://www.floridahealth.gov/newsroom/2016/02/020516-zika-update.html

Probably yes due to the heat and the large amount of water in the area.
The insect is small and difficult to exterminate like any mosquito.
