8 Inch driver for OB
« on: 29 Jan 2015, 07:03 pm »
I have tried to buy the Wild Burro Betsy drivers at least 3 separate times and they are always out of stock. Is there a comparable 8 inch driver suitable for OB designs? TIA

For an 8 inch full-range driver in OB the Visaton B200 can not be ignored.   I have not poped my in a OB yet so can't say how they compare but I also like the entire Tang Band bamboo line.  I've had the 4 and 8 inch and yet the try the unobtainium 5 inch.

I really like the TBs but if you want a single 8 with no bass support the Visaton would probably work the best for you in my humble opinion.

Thanks, the B200 is on the short list.  I found this dayton driver in a search. Has anyone used this driver in an OB design?

The Dayton point source drivers are reported to have a fair amount of shout, but I have not heard them for myself. The MarkAudio 12P is a really nice sounding 8" FR that I have heard.

I would consider the Alpair 12P as a 6,5inches due its large border and small 12cm cone.

That is the one I have in the bass augmented U frame with the 8" servo woofers.

The Dayton's Qts is pretty low for OB... not usable if you were to run it full-range with no bass support.  And like Ed said it is a little shouty for my taste despite being cheaper and is on sale often enough.

The Tang Bands are neutral, very detailed yet still very easy to listen to for hours on end.  The Visaton are said to also exhibit these same characteristics but can be used full-range with no bass support.  Will have limited output but for jazz, blues, acoustic, small ensembles and the like it should be heaven.

Proven performance for both the TB and Visaton.

I would have to 2nd this as I have been living with a pair of these since they first came out, they are fabulous  :thumb: IMO! I supplemented with a top firing Motorola piezo tweeter on my OB's  with a first order crossover @ 10k to add some air. These are the most natural sounding full range drivers I have heard in this price range and prefer them to the far more expensive Feastrex that I am quite familiar with.

I suppose you intend use it for mids and hi freq.
For bass I suggest this, better than Eminance Alpha 15A:

FRM: Alpha 15a Qts is 1.26 versus 0.6 on this PRV guy. Probably need some equalization/bass boost.

Consider this if you can stand the lower sensitivity: http://www.parts-express.com/grs-15pf-8-15-paper-cone-foam-surround-woofer--292-415 for $30 ea. John Busch uses this in his Manzanita designs. Anxious to see what he brings to LSAF next weekend.

Sorry I forget to mention this woofer not for OB, but BR as suggested by PE in a big bass reflex box.

This GRS woffer have low efficiency just 87dB and the QTS is too hi.
The Alpha w/QTS 126 already have a soft bass, w/QTS 137 the bass will be ethereal.

This other PRV is even better(for a BR around 180Lts or more) the MMS is just 78grams:

Those are two good recommendations, also note that many are having good results with the Eminence 15A, in an economical OB set up. There are many options in lower priced/economical woofers, that are very good "bang for your buck" drivers.

I personally have tried the Eminence Delta 15FLA and it does require a long break in period, but is very good in OB design. I am using a simple Parasound HCA 600 (60 watts) to power a pair and they a very nice. Loud accurate and powerful. In a simple flat OB, nothing complicated in design..

For a upper price there is the Tone Tubby 12 alnico at $300 a guitar woofer already projected to OB, Qts=08
Its used as OB or BR in hifi, the 16 ohms version have a nice freq shape;

I have been using the tone Tubby for a couple years now with Lowther PM6A. The Tone Tubby is a very good mid bass driver.
I am crossing at a little over 50 hz to a PPSL sub using to 15" drivers. I am very pleased with this combo.
